  • 2. HOW WOULD YOU KNOW A TRUE VS FALSE PROPHESY?
    • Duet 18:22  When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
  • 3. ESCHATOLOGY CLASS Study of Prophecy 101
  • 4. Teacher Pastor George Duke Apostolic Christian Training Lesson 1 www.actchurch.com
  • 5. RULES TO REMEMBER
    • 1-DO NOT LOSE YOURSELF OVER YOUR PET IDEAS ON PROPHESY
    • 2-USE AN OPEN MIND
  • 6. Eschatology Eschatology (from the Greek ἔσχατος, Eschatos meaning "last" and -logy meaning "the study of") is a part of theology and philosophy concerned with the final events in the history of the world, or the ultimate destiny of humanity, commonly referred to as the end of the world.
  • 7. Prophesy is attempting to Discover God’s Plans for the End Times
  • 8.
    • FOUR DIFFERENT VIEWS OF PROPHECY
    • 1-Preterism
    • 2-Historicism
    • 3-Futurism
    • 4-Allegory
  • 9. FIRST MAJOR PROPHECY INTERPRETATION:
    • 1-Preterism (what is preterism?)
    • Preterism is the belief that all Bible prophecies, including those concerned with the Second Coming of Jesus, the Resurrection of the Dead, the Rapture, the Judgment and the arrival of the Kingdom of God, came to fulfillment in a.d. 70 at the destruction of Herod’s temple in Jerusalem
  • 10. Preterism FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS The Jewish Pharisee priest who was the "Puppet" historian paid by the Roman Emperor TITUS to write the story of Rome's conquest of Jerusalem — in which he was the first "Preterist" to proclaim the Romans "Fulfillment" of Daniel's Prophecies. He is the "Authority" for MODERN PRETERISM.
  • 11. Preterism
  • 12. SECOND PROPHECY INTERPRETATION:
    • 2-Historicism (What is Historicism?)
    • Historicism is unlike Preterism, which teaches that most of prophecy has been fulfilled in the past. It also differs from Futurism, which teaches that prophecy will only be fulfilled at some future date. In brief, Historicism teaches that biblical predictions are being fulfilled throughout history and continue to be fulfilled today.
  • 13. Historicism
    • As for Daniel 11, all historicists seem to agree on this method of interpretation. Their idea is to consider the prophecy as a time chart; a simple list of historical events. They maintain that successive verses, sentences, phrases etc. are describing events in a chronologically successive order. Exceptions to chronological exactness are tolerated.
  • 14. EARLY ADVOCATES
    • The Historical or Continuous expositors believe the Revelation a progressive history of the church from the first century to the end of time. The advocates of this method of interpretation are the most numerous, and among them are such famous writers as Luther, Sir Isaac Newton, Bengel, Faber, Elliot, Wordsworth, Hengstenburg, Alford, Fausset and Lee
  • 15. SIR ISAAC NEWTON WAS A PROPONANT OF HISTORICISM IN HIS OBSERVATIONS ON DANIEL AND THE APOCALYPSE OF ST. JOHN HE QUOTED:
    • I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it come to pass you might believe. John 14:29
  • 16. Isaac Newton Taught
    • For some time after Luther’s bold accusation that the Papacy was AntiChrist, Roman Catholic leadership responded by suppression and persecution. But, suppression proved impossible and persecution only fanned the flames for the stake proved a powerful pulpit. When England defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588 the island citadel of Protestantism was established. Rome finally had to meet the reformer’s challenge on their own ground - in the scriptures.
  • 17. Isaac Newton Taught
    • Through a collaboration of Jesuits Francisco Ribera of Spain and Robert Bellarmine of Rome, the Papacy put forward its counter interpretation, Futurism. The Pope was not AntiChrist they contended for he was not to appear until “in the future”. Their new interpretation was published in 1591 - three years after the defeat of the Spanish Armada when all hope of crushing Protestantism was gone. Luis de Alcazar published the contradictory Preterist interpretation in 1614. He argued that AntiChrist had come and gone before the book of Revelation was written.
  • 18. Isaac Newton Wrote
    • God gave the prophecies, not to gratify men's curiosity by enabling them to fore know things, but that after they were fulfilled they might be interpreted by the event, and His own providence, not the interpreters, be thereby manifested to the world.
    • Sir Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727)
  • 19. Woolsthorpe Manor -Newton's Birthplace The book of Daniel was a pre-written history of the world and to interpret it would unlock a treasure of understanding. The book had been sealed  (Dan 12:4) and Newton believed the appointed time had arrived to break the seal. God had chosen him to interpret it. This remarkable fact surfaced from recently discovered manuscripts of his. He was haunted all his life by this calling.
  • 20. THIRD PROPHECY INTERPRETATION: :
    • 3-Futurist (What is Futurism) All things regarding prophesy have not been fulfilled and are for the future
  • 21. Rev. Thomas Ice says
    • Futurism instead of preterism can be shown by demonstrating from specific texts of Scripture that "coming" in the debated passages refer to a bodily return of Christ to planet earth, not a mystical coming mediated through the Roman Army.
  • 22. WHO BEGAN THE FUTURIST INTERPRETATION OF PROPHECY AND WHO WERE THE GREAT EARLY PROPAGATORS OF FUTURISM??
  • 23. FUTURISM Francisco Ribera (1537-1591) was a Jesuit doctor of theology, born in Spain, who began writing a lengthy (500 page) commentary in 1585 on the book of Revelation (Apocalypse) titled In Sacrum Beati Ioannis Apostoli, & Evangelistiae Apocalypsin Commentarij , and published it about the year 1590. He died in 1591 at the age of fifty-four, so he was not able to expand on his work or write any other commentaries on Revelation. In order to remove the Catholic Church from consideration as the antichrist power, Ribera proposed that the first few chapters of the Apocalypse applied to ancient pagan Rome, and the rest he limited to a yet future period of 3 1/2 literal years, immediately prior to the second coming. During that time, the Roman Catholic Church would have fallen away from the pope into apostasy. Then, he proposed, the antichrist, a single individual, would: Persecute and blaspheme the saints of God. Rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Abolish the Christian religion. Deny Jesus Christ. Be received by the Jews. Pretend to be God. Kill the two witnesses of God. Conquer the world.
  • 24. Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, one of the best known Jesuit apologists, published a work between 1581 and 1593 entitled Polemic Lectures Concerning the Disputed Points of the Christian Belief Against the Heretics of This Time
  • 25. FOURTH INTERPRETATION OF PROPHECY
    • Allegory
    • The allegorical, or spiritual view, does not see the contents of the Book of Revelation as literal. Rather its language is symbolic, and each generation can read and interpret it in their own way. The various visions in the Book of Revelation express eternal spiritual truths and struggles that are without any literal or historical application. Revelation is seen as having several levels of meaning, which range from a strict and literal interpretation to an interpretation that cannot be understood and interpreted only on the basis of one's intellect.
  • 26. ANTICHRIST IS MOVED EITHER FORWARD OR BACKWARD IN TIME Ribera's Futurism Puts the Antichrist Into A Future Three and One-half Literal Years. Preterism Identifies the Antichrist as Nero. Both of Them Put Antichrist Outside the Middle Ages and the Reformation Period, identified by Protestant Historicists as Antichrist's Reign of 1260 Prophetic Years.
  • 27. HAS THE FOLLOWING BEEN FULFILLED?
    • 6 Fulfillments of the 70 weeks
    • . 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, (1) to finish the transgression , and to (2) make an end of sins , and to (3) make reconciliation for iniquity , and to (4) bring in everlasting righteousness , and to (5) seal up the vision and prophecy , and to (6) anoint the most Holy
  • 28.
  • 29. LETS LOOK AT SOME OF THE VIEWS FROM REVELATION OF THE PROPHETICAL INTERPRETATIONS
  • 30. REVELATION CHAPTER 1-3
    • Most Historicists and Futurists believe that the church age is depicted in these chapters
    • Disagreements come with the 4 th chapter and when this takes place
  • 31. REVELATION CHAPTER 4:1
    •     1 After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
  • 32. Rev chapter 6
  • 33.
    • The Horsemen each ride on a colored horse—white, red, black, and pale (green)—and represent various dramatic qualities. Regarding three of the Horsemen, there is a basic consensus as to their meaning, with red symbolizing war, black symbolizing famine, and pale representing death and disease. The rider of the white horse is more controversial. Some futurists consider him to represent Christ, Historicists believe he represents peace then war in the Roman empire during the reign of the Caesars, while others believe he symbolizes the Anti-Christ. The vision of the Four Horsemen describes events related to the Last Days, interpreted by some as relating to the future and by others as describing events occurring after the time when the author of the Book of Revelation was writing, during the pre-Christian Roman Empire.
  • 34. The First Seal--Rider on White Horse Rev 6:1 Then I saw when the Lamb broke one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying as with a voice of thunder, "Come." 2 I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.
  • 35. The Second Seal--War 3 When He broke the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, "Come." 4 And another, a red horse, went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another; and a great sword was given to him.
  • 36. The Third Seal--Famine 5 When He broke the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, "Come." I looked, and behold, a black horse; and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not damage the oil and the wine."
  • 37. The Fourth Seal--Death Rev 6:8 NIV) I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
  • 38. ANTICHRIST
    • WHO IS HE????
    • Historicist & Reformationist’s say he was the Pope
    • Futurists say he is to be revealed
    • 2 John 1: 7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
    • Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
    • Daniel 8:25; 11:21 "By peace he shall destroy many," and "he shall come in peaceably and obtain the kingdom by flatteries“
    •   Rev 17:] With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
  • 39. WAS THE POPES THE ANTI-CHRIST?
  • 40. THE BEAST OF REVELATION
    • Revelation 13:1-2 (KJV) 1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
  • 41. MARK OF THE BEAST
    • Revelation 13:17 (KJV) 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
    • Revelation 14:11 (KJV) 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
  • 42. MARK OF THE BEAST Futurists today say it’s a chip that will be inserted to identify us
  • 43. To understand the beast of Revelation is we must look at the O.T. to find what a beast represents
    • In Daniels vision of future world powers there was a beast that was a symbol of each empire
  • 44.
  • 45. The Lion - Babylon. Wings represent conquering speed. King Nebuchadnezzar. The Bear - Medo-Persia. One shoulder raised above the other represents the dominance of the Medes over the Persians. The three ribs represent the three kingdoms overthrown by this kingdom - Egypt, Lydia, and Babylon. ( Daniel 8:20 ) The Leopard - Greece. Four wings representing great conquering speed. The four heads represent Alexander the Great’s four generals who ruled Greece after his death – Seleucus, Ptolemy, Lysimachus and Cassander. ( Daniel 8:21-22 ) The different beast - Rome. The ten horns - the divisions of Rome (Same as the toes of Chapter 2). The ten horns are the 10 divisions of the Roman Empire as it fell apart. These were the Anglo Saxons (England), Alemanni (Germany), Heruli (x493AD), Vandals (x534AD), Ostrogoths (x538AD), Visigoths (Spain), Suevi (Portugal), Lombard’s (Italy), Burgundians (Swiss) and the Franks (France).

Rev 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.Rev
  • 48. 9:7. And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10. And they had tails like unto scorpions; and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11. And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

  • 56. THOSE WHO ARE NOT BORN AGAIN WILL STAND BEFORE GOD
  • 57. Rev 17:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

  • 81. Tribulation
    • The preterist (past) believes that most, if not all prophecy has already been fulfilled, usually in relation to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The historicist (present) sees much of the current church age as equal to the tribulation period. Thus, prophecy has been and will be fulfilled during the current church age.
  • 82. Tribulation Futurists View
    • It will last seven years (Dan 9:27)
    • Other terms for it include:

    • 2—Rapture
      • The term “rapture” is from the Latin Vulgate for “caught up” in 1 Thes 4:17.
  • 110.
    • 3—Revelation
    • The word “revelation” is used for both the last book of the Bible and the grand event of that book: the return of Christ to the earth to establish is kingdom (19:11).
    • 4—Resurrection
      • Two Kinds: --To Life & --To Damnation
    • John 5:28-29 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out-- those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.
    • [1] The Resurrection to Life … takes place in phases:
      • Resurrection Program
      • 1- Christ’s (first fruits) 1 Cor 15:20 … then …
      • 2- Rapture (at Christ’s coming) 1 Cor 15:51-52; 1 Thes 4:16-17

    • 5—Millennium
    • The Word “millennium” is not found in the Bible!
      • The Latin mille = 1,000
      • The Latin annus = year
      • The Greek equivalent  occurs only in Rev. 20:2,3
    • Revelation 19:2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
      • It refers to a 1,000 year reign of the Christ over a literal KINGDOM of God on the earth
      • Various views include: Pre-Millennialism, Post-Millennialism, Amillennialism
  • 111.
      • A. PRE-Millennialism--Holds that the return of Christ will be BEFORE a literal 1,000 year reign as king over a literal kingdom on earth.
      • B. POST-Millennialism--Holds that the return of Christ will be AFTER a literal 1,000 year reign of righteousness is brought about by the church as the kingdom of God.
      • C. Amillennialism--Holds that the return of Christ will be WHENEVER because the kingdom of Christ is spiritual and is going on right now in the hearts of believers. There is no literal kingdom. The term “1,000 years” is symbolic for a long time.
    • 6--Tribulation
    • The term “tribulation” is from the King James version of Matthew 24-25. It is used to refer to a future time of terrible distress to the world and Israel. It will last seven years (Dan 9:27)
    • Other terms for it include:
        • Daniels 70 th “Seven” (“Week” KJV)
        • the Day of the Lord (Ez 30:3)
        • Time of Jacob’s Trouble (Jer 30:7)
      • GREAT-Tribulation … Refers to the second half of the “tribulation” period and begins when the “abomination that causes desolation” appears in the temple. (Mat 24:15-24; Daniel 9:27).
      • Other references to the “great tribulation include:
        • Time of Jacob’s trouble (Jer 30:7)
        • Time, times and ½ time (Dan 12:7)
        • 1,260 days (Rev 11:3)
        • Great day of their wrath (Rev 6:17)
      • A. PRE-Tribulation--Means that the “rapture of the church” will take place BEFORE the “tribulation” begins.
      • B. POST-Tribulation--Means that the “rapture of the church” will take place at the END OF or AFTER the “tribulation.”
  • 112.
      • C. MID-Tribulation--Means that the “rapture of the church” will take place IN THE MIDDLE OF the “tribulation” period.
      • D. PRE-WRATH-Tribulation-Means that the “rapture of the church” will take place PRIOR TO THE WRATH associated with the “tribulation” period.
      • E. PARTIAL-Tribulation--Means that only those waiting and watching for Christ will be taken in the rapture—those not ready will be left to endure the “tribulation” period.
    • 7--JUDGMENT
      • Judgment falls into different categories:
        • The Judgment Seat of Christ
        • The Judgment of the Nations
        • The Great White Throne Judgment
      • A. Judgment SEAT of Christ =  j Place of reward. (2 Cor 5:10; Ro 14:10; 1 Cor 3:9-15)
      • No condemnation (Romans 8:1) For the believer’s condemnation was paid for at the cross!
      • 1 Cor 3: 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
      • B. Judgment of the NATIONS
      • Mat 25:31-46 31 "When the Son of Man comes … he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, …take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the cretion of the world. …41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. … 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
