I like your conclusion that suggests some shanty towns are better places to live than others. In Rio, favela tourism is being encouraged in some of the safer neighbourhoods.

A good effort with lots of information. Remember though to include the URL address of any photgraphs you use! I like the way you have expanded many of your points. You should also try to link various factors together. For example poor water supply and poor sanitation.

Shanty Town Life. Liam Dack - Presentation Transcript

  1. What is life like in the shanty towns? Liam Dack 10H http://travel.webshots.com/photo/1118218460053733741caiwXN
  2. What is a Shanty Town?
    • A Shanty Town, also known as a Bustee (India) and a Favella (Brazil), is a self constructed housing estate, usually created illegally upon owned land. Shanty Towns are often based upon land of which no one else will use, and are usually located near big industrial urban areas.
    • The inhabitants of these estates will work long hours for small amounts of money enthusiastically as they have more than likely come from a worse of situation. Usually the occupants will have been employed by a near by organisation.
  3. Facilities
    • The average Favella has no water and no electricity. Desperate and dangerous measures have to be taken to acquire electricity like manually attaching cables to pylons power cables! Water supply is usually scarce, the council would usually provide a stand pipe to provide water. Due to open sewers and because it is owned the council will not clean the streets, this results in disease spreading very easily.

  4. Houses.
    • Houses are usually located within a 25 km radius of the nearest city. The majority of houses are dangerously unsafe, consisting of scrap metal and constructed dangerously. A large quantity of shanty towns are constructed illegally upon owned land. Also the shanty town wont be provided with electricity or water from the council as they are not in charge of the land.

  5. Employment.
    • Most shanty town civilians work in a near by establishment, usually a large company which needs vast amounts of employees. The employees would work long hours for a minimum wage, which would be enough to keep themselves and there families alive, this is the only option they have.
  6. Education.
    • To make it in life you have to have an education, this rule also applies to the Shanty Town civilians, with a decent education possibilities arise as they have a possibility to have a well paid and good quality job. To obtain a decent education in a Shanty Town is very hard, this is because of the lack of schools and facilities. If a civilian is lucky enough to receive a decent education, this could result into a better standard of living as well as a better quality of life.

  7. Shanty Town life, Good or Bad?
    • In conclusion, life in the Shanty Town is very different compared to life in the UK.
    • There may well be a low level Standard of living, but there may be a high level quality of life, this may be because the community itself may be brought together to help each other through hard times, this is a advantage that Shanty Town life has over urban cities.
