    A personal tour guide of the cape winelands for your mobile phone. Turn Left at the Barrel. http://thegiraffe.co.za. - Presentation Transcript

    1. A customised guide to the Cape Winelands for your mobile phone © Turn left at the giraffe™. All rights reserved. 2009 http://thegiraffe.co.za
    2. The Cape Winelands
        • There are over 650 wine estates in the Cape.
        • These estates produce more than 6 000 different wines.
        • Whether you are a Cape local or an international visitor, deciding which estate to visit is a daunting task. Let alone selecting a wine to taste!
      • These estates are well marketed on the web, both locally and internationally. However this information has limited reach when people are touring the winelands.

    3. Assessment of Cape wine routes
      • All the necessary information to complete a personalised wine tour is available, but it takes a lot of time and effort to compile.
      • There are many islands of information, each with shortcomings:
        • Maps help with route planning and directions,
          • but can't provide estate details, or understand your preferences and offer relevant recommendations.
        • Wine web sites offer estate, wine and location details,
          • but can't plan a route end-to-end.
        • Guide books offer static route details and recommendations
          • but can't be customised or updated based on your location.
        • GPS devices can show POIs and routing information,
          • but don't cater for personal preferrences.

    4. Business Opportunity
      • 5 elements are needed to deliver a successful wine tour:
        • relevant estate & wine details must be available to make appropriate choices
        • valid recommendations based on personal preferences
        • an end-to-end route can be planned (and dynamically updated based on location and subsequent estate choices)
        • nearby estates can be highlighted
        • turn-by-turn directions can be provided
      • Allowing users to access the same wine and planning information from various starting perspectives is advantageous. Examples would be:
        • views by region
        • views of nearby estates
        • views by wine preference or cultivar
        • views by specialty tour

    5. Possible revenue models
      • There are a number of potential revenue models:
        • $4.99: charge users a fee when downloading the app from a store.
        • Freemium: estates get free listing. Pay a subscription-based premium to manage their content, events, wine inventory and social network links.
        • Lead generation: estates pay for newsletter sign-ups
        • Google Ads: in-place Adsense and Google Map advertising
        • CPM/Banner Ads: independent ads placed in ad-spots
      • These options could be used individually or in any combination

      • The solution is implemented for the Cape Winelands, and is designed generically for heirarchical information on any locations and products.
      • Data and API access are structured:
      • Country
      • -> Province
      • -> Region
      • -> Suburb
      • -> Street & Place
      • -> Product(s)

    9. Turn left at the Giraffe
      • We love technology (and giraffes).
      • Especially when our technology can be used to solve every-day challenges. So as mobile and web power-users we design solutions firstly as users and then as geeks.
      • We bring over 46 giraffe-years (or 15 human years) of international and South African web-experience to our solutions.
      • When not grazing with the herd, we can be found at the tip of Africa, in beautiful Cape Town.
