  • This is a picture of Centennial Campus as it looked in 1989, five years after it began. It had only one research building and the College of Textiles complex. We call that Centennial Campus 1.0.
  • This is what Centennial Campus looks like today, with more than 30 buildings and new buildings being constructed, including the James B. Hunt Jr. library, student housing and a new office building on the corner of Varsity and Main Campus Drive. We call that Centennial Campus 2.0.
  • But what’s next? What’s the next big thing?
  • Well, upon build out in 20 years or so, Centennial Campus will be three times its current size and be home to about 20,000 employees, staff, faculty and students. That’s fine.
  • But we think there’s an even bigger idea.
  • We’re calling it vCentennial.
  • vCentennial would be the world’s first fully integrated and operational research campus combing the virtual and the physical.
  • We’re not talking about virtual worlds like Second Life.
  • Nor are we talking about computer simulations or e-learning.
  • We are talking about remotely controlling actual lab and testing equipment that is controlled from anywhere in the world 24/7. So, for example, a pharmaceutical company could train its employees in cGMP remotely using our equipment in our BTEC facility.
  • We’re also talking about corporate research lab outposts on Centennial Campus that are remotely controlled by researchers in corporate offices or research labs.
  • The concept of the Centennial outpost is a critical element too because it means any intellectual property that is developed on the NC State property would still be owned by the company and protected. Thus, for example, a service contract to use an electron microscope could be in place and the company would not have to share any financial benefits from discoveries or inventions with the university.
  • Of course, this concept also means we can teach “hands-on” virtual classes. A class in Madrid, Spain, for example, could actually control the dials on our reactor lab remotely at any time of the day or night.
  •  So what are talking about here? We’re talking about a full operational virtual laboratory network that makes equipment, training and educational facilities available to corporate or educational partners anywhere in the world at any time.
  • Ladies and gentlemen…this has never been tried or done before and we intend to do it.
