080616 A 1 The Nature Of Success Discover The Power Of Belief

 1. 1. For the ESS TechTeam…My notes from: The Nature of Success by Mac Anderson, the founder of Successories Today’s topic… Savor the Moment
 2. 2. Introduction --Follow Your Dreams--

Discover your personal definition of success

Discover your reason for being

Set clearly defined goals

Never waiver in your belief that you can achieve the goals

Manage your attitude

Persevere when adversity strikes…and it will

Learn to take risks and embrace change

Keep kindness in our heart…always

Love and be loved

Make a difference whenever, wherever, and however, you can

 3. 3. Follow Your Dreams

Successful is the person who has lived well,

Laughed often, and loved much,

Who has never lacked for appreciation for the earth’s beauty,

Who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.

 4. 4. Discover the Power of Belief

Runners tried to break the 4-minute mile for a hundred years

Many thought & said it could not be done

May 1954, Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3:59.4 & shocked the world

What happened after – that is what was amazing !

 5. 5.

The 4-minute barrier was broken again

The next month, and then again and again

Since Bannister, it has been broken more than 700 times

What happened? The only difference was they now believed it could be done . The barrier had come down.

Do you believe in what ESS can be, and the contribution you can make?

Discover the Power of Belief
 6. 6. Discover the Power of Belief

As a member of the ESS TechTeam , many times you don’t get to choose:

What, where, when, why, or with whom you do a job

But for many of the jobs , you do get to make significant choices:

How you do the job (as to timeliness, quality, profitability)

How you can set an example for others ( Best Way, Right Way, All the Way )

How you treat others and especially the Customer !

 7. 7. Discover the Power of Belief

Two from the TechTeam have expressed in the last week, that they were dedicating themselves to improved performance and contribution for ESS and our customers.

What could we accomplish if we all joined that group?

That is the question for each of us today…

Will you join the focus?

“ On time, On the Job, On Track ?”

 8. 8. Discover the Power of Belief

Behind me is infinite power,

Before me is endless possibility,

Around me is boundless opportunity,

Why should I fear?

 9. 9. Belief Fuels Enthusiasm

VP of Sales with a Food Company (prepared salads) finally captured a meeting with a client that represented a phenomenal opportunity!

Preparation was complete, and now they were in front of the client with samples.

As the presentation pointed to the quality and benefits of the product, it developed to the point of sampling the actual food.

A container of salad was opened, and a “bad” vegetable was on top…

What happened after – that is what was amazing !

 10. 10.

The customer hadn’t seen the problem yet.

The Sales Manager promptly picked up the vegetable with his fingers, popped it into his mouth – and said, “I can’t get enough of this great salad !”

What happened? The VP believed in his product knew this was a rare occurrence and he took the opportunity to prevent a loss with the customer..

Do you believe in what ESS can be? Can you take all opportunity’s to show ESS’ best to our clients ?

Belief Fuels Enthusiasm
 11. 11. Belief Fuels Enthusiam

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

---Ralph Waldo Emerson

 12. 12. Ride the Wave of Passion

What happens when you believe something with all your heart?

Belief fuels enthusiasm, and determined enthusiasm explodes into passion. It fires our souls and lifts our spirits .

 13. 13.

In 1991, Successories hired Tim Dumbler as an account manager, though skeptical about him as he was legally blind

He suggested if he could have the job, he would buy a machine to help enter orders

He became the top producer . Peers liked him because of his caring, positive attitude

Customers loved him because he was a great listener

Ride the Wave of Passion
 14. 14. Ride the Wave of Passion

Tim was asked, “How do you stay so positive ?”

His response was, “It’s unfortunate that I’m visually impaired, but I have to tell you that fighting through the adversity has made me a better person . I have come to realize that I have a lot more than I don’t have . I love my family. I love my work and the people I work with. I’ve been blessed in many ways .”

His passion propelled him to great success.

 15. 15. Ride the Wave of Passion

The wave of passion can become an unstoppable force.

 16. 16. Manage Your Attitude

After more than 30 years in business, I’m convinced that – the difference in success and failure is not how you look, how you dress, not education …but how you think!

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of maintaining a positive attitude

It’s impossible to understate the difficulty in actually doing it.

 17. 17.

First on the author’s list is exercise – motivation & energy are tied to exercise, a “top stress-buster”

Second on his list is gratitude – we are blessed in so many ways; we need to remind ourselves daily

The third key to managing my attitude is to laugh at myself and to laugh with others

William James , one of the fathers of modern psychology, said, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter their life by altering their attitude .”

Manage Your Attitude
 18. 18. Manage Your Attitude

Researchers have investigated why some people can’t cope and found three reasons:

Low self-esteem

Living in the past

Can’t laugh at themselves

Laugh at yourself , laugh with your friends , your family , and your co-workers

It will keep you going , keep you healthy , and keep you motivated.

 19. 19. Manage Your Attitude

Your attitude almost always determines your altitude in life.

 20. 20. A Question for the TechTeam

Jim wants us to think of where ESS needs to be in five years – what will a successful ESS look like then?

What do we need to focus on, what do we need to develop or initiate to put us on the road to getting there?

The TechTeam is the core of ESS’s success to this point, it will need to be the basis of our future also!

Thank you for your contribution!

 21. 21. Ride the Wave of Passion

The wave of passion can become an unstoppable force.

 22. 22. Discover Your Reason for Being

Who am I?

What am I meant to do here?

What am I trying to do with my life?

These are important and powerful questions – ones that can be difficult to answer.

These questions surface when during major life transitions…

 23. 23.

Every person is a unique being.

There is only one of you in the universe.

You have many gifts – even more yet to be discovered.

How will you apply your gifts to your work?

How can we help you learn, grow, and excel?

Discover Your Reason for Being
 24. 24. Discover Your Reason for Being

Albert Schweitzer said it well:

“ I don’t know what your destiny will be , but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve .”

 25. 25. Discover Your Reason for Being

May it be said, when the sun sets on your life, you made a difference.

 26. 26. Develop an Unquenchable Thirst for Knowledge

In 1972, Jim Cathcart was making $525 a month in Little Rock, AR , with a new wife & baby , no degree , no past success , not much hope for the future.

Jim was listening to a radio program “ Our Changing World” by Earl Nightingale , known as “the Dean of Personal Motivation ”, whose booming voice said, “ If you will spend an extra hour a day in your field, you will be an expert in five years or less.”

Though Jim was stunned, it made sense . He had always wanted to speak and help people grow in personal development.

 27. 27.

He studied , worked on becoming better organized, joined a self-improvement group, exercised , was disciplined , and really put Nightingale’s theory to the test.

It worked!

Jim Cathcart has now delivered more than 2500 speeches and won every major award in the speaking industry.

Jim (with Tony Allesandra) produced one the best study programs on relating to people titled “ Relationship Stategies .”

Develop an Unquenchable Thirst for Knowledge
 28. 28.

Just like companies have market value, so do people!

Your value increases by knowing and doing more in your work.

Knowledge is power, not only for your career, but to improve your family and spiritual life.

Develop an Unquenchable Thirst for Knowledge
 29. 29. Develop an Unquenchable Thirst for Knowledge

Knowledge is like climbing a mountain: The higher you reach, the more you can see and appreciate.

 30. 30. Set Realistic Short-term Goals

“ I was having a rough week when there was a lot to do and very little time to do it. I was overwhelmed . I panicked.”

Our author shares that he learned an unforgettable lesson , when he stated the above to a friend and the friend shared advice that his grandmother had given him years before…

“ Inch by inch, life’s a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard.”

“ Come on,” he said, “Here I am drowning in work, and you give me a quote from your grandmother?”

But those twelve little words challenged him. He made a list of the things to do, and began working them out, one by one .

 31. 31.

Three days later the list was checked off. It worked ! He wrote the quote and carries it still today in his wallet.

Success doesn’t come cascading like Niagara Falls, it comes one drop at a time with the achievement of short-term, realistic goals .

If you believe something (goals are realistic), you’re likely to be highly motivated .

If you think you can’t (unrealistic goals) your motivation falls greatly.

Set Realistic Short-term Goals
 32. 32.

The lesson – Continue to dream big dreams!

But realize that it is short-term goals that take you to the next plateau and they are the real keys to success .

So, transform that dream , the big goal, into small short-term goals , and set out to accomplish them, one by one, like checking off a list.

Goals are “ dreams with deadlines .”

Set Realistic Short-term Goals
 33. 33. Set Realistic Short-term Goals Inch by inch , life’s a cinch . Yard by yard, life is hard.
 34. 34. Imagination – Tap Your Creativity

Good ideas don’t just happen .

They depend on people making them happen . People eager to explore new paths, desiring to learn new things.

An expert on creativity, Jordan Ayan, in his book Ignite Your Creative Spark suggests 4 steps…

 35. 35.

Preparation – gather info/resources to fully understand a problem

Incubation – let your mind “play” with the idea

Illumination – experience the “Aha!” moment when the idea develops

Implementation – You do or you don’t …

Imagination – Tap Your Creativity
 36. 36.

Implementation is where most people fall off the “creative train” .

Lots of folks have great ideas in the shower , but they seem to lose them when they dry off .

Use persistence and passion to bring your ideas to life .

What ideas can you and I contribute to leading ESS to the Best Way, the Right Way, All the Way ?

Imagination – Tap Your Creativity
 37. 37. Imagination – Tap Your Creativity Imagination is seeing things, not as they are, but as they could be . Imagination – Tap Your Creativity
 38. 38. Embrace Change in Your Life

The root word for “ motivation ” is “ move ” and movement is change .

Ask, “ Am I moving forward , or am I standing still ?”

“ Am I pleased with my relationships ?”

“ Do I have a healthy lifestyle ?”

“ Is my energy level , my attitude where it should be ?”

Truthful answers to these questions may tell you whether you want, or need change .

 39. 39.

Comfort zones put padlocks on the doors to growth , discovery , and adventure in our lives.

3 keys that will unlock these doors are discipline , hard work , and faith .

Remember, when it comes to progress , when it comes to change , “ Inch by inch life’s a cinch, yard by yard, life is hard .”

Unlock 1 door at a time , enjoy small successes , and soon you’ll have achieved your goals .

Embrace Change in Your Life
 40. 40.

Change can truly be a wonderful gift .

It can recharge your emotional battery and nourish your soul .

Just do it! Choose change and let it make a positive difference in your life .

What change can you choose that will help lead ESS to the Best Way, the Right Way, All the Way ?

Embrace Change in Your Life
 41. 41. Embrace Change in Your Life Sometimes in the winds of change we find our true direction.
 42. 42. Have Heroes

Things don’t always go as planned . Finding inspiration during these times can get us back on track .

Sometimes, thinking of personal heroes – people who accomplished great things under difficult circumstances, give me energy and courage , like…

Mother Teresa , who devoted her life to caring for the poorest of the poor.

Helen Keller had every excuse to give up on life, yet she persevered and became an inspiration to millions .

Abraham Lincoln failed in 2 businesses, lost 6 elections, but became possibly our greatest president

And Ricky Johnson …

 43. 43.

Nothing had gone well as I was selling dictionaries door-to-door, and I hadn’t sold one that day.

I had gotten 2 people out of bed, and had been bitten by a German Shepherd ( so far ).

At the next house, Mrs. Johnson greeted me with a smile, listened and said, “ Let’s see what Ricky thinks .”

In a small room was a 13-year-old with legs withered by polio . Ricky said, “ This will help with my school work! ”

He remarked, “ I like my teachers & classmates , they made a ramp for me to use at school. I am going to finish & go on to college .”

Have Heroes
 44. 44.

With a lump in my throat, I left, and then had the best sales day of that summer . This young boy had made me quit feeling sorry for myself , and I’ll never forget his wonderful attitude about life.

Often we worry about what we don’t have , and don’t spend enough time being thankful for what we do have .

Sometimes it takes a “hero” to remind us.

At ESS we need good attitudes , helpfulness toward others , and perseverance .

Have Heroes
 45. 45. Have Heroes The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time. ---Abraham Lincoln The best and most beautiful things in life cannot be seen, not touched, but are felt in the heart. ---Helen Keller In this life we cannot always do great things. But we can do small things with great love. ---Mother Teresa
 46. 46. Seek Solitude

Do you ever need your emotional battery recharged ?

When it’s been too long since I’ve gotten a break , it begins to affect my mood , my energy levels , and my ability to think clearly and act decisively .

In our jobs, it is important to effectively focus on details , but we must check periodically to insure that we are seeing our job activities in perspective.

 47. 47.

Two “Stress Busters”

Exercise

Solitude

They move us beyond the “ noise and confusion ” from our everyday world.

Using the beauty of nature , or music , or just thoughtful focus on the beauty of life (love, joy, peace)

Plan a few minutes each day

Plan an hour @ least during the weekend

Seek Solitude
 48. 48. Seek Solitude

True silence is rest of the mind, and it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.

---William Penn

 49. 49. Savor the Moment

In the race to become better or best , at today’s hectic pace, we sometimes lose site of just being.

We often forget to savor small pleasures and accomplishments while we make big plans.

Did I do a good job this morning? Was that cabling installed well, supported to code? If the answer is yes , enjoy the satisfaction of doing a job well .

Off the job , am I taking time to enjoy the break from work?

 50. 50.

Have you ever had a crazy notion to go fishing at midnight ? The author did.

Going there he took in all the sights and sounds of nature , and on his first cast, reeled in a bass weighing over five pounds , which he released, though it was one of the biggest he had ever caught.

In the next two hours he caught 17 bass (all between 2 and 5 pounds). Having fished for almost 50 years, he had never experienced anything like this . This was a life-time memory .

When work is hard, time is short, take a moment to remind yourself of “moments” and blessings, and savor them .

Savor the Moment
 51. 51. Savor the Moment

We must not allow the clock and the calendar to blind us to the fact that each moment is a miracle and a mystery.

---H.G. Wells
