I am going to give a you a brief update about the eLearning projects work to date and then focus on current work in handThe eLearning project now has 3 eLearning staff (one at each institution) and 1 technical post based in Swansea however the wider team of 6 are all involved in the project more or less equallyBroadly the scope of the project was to develop an eLearning centre of excellence and build a common learning platform across the three institutions
Our major commercial partner in the project is Blackboard who have kindly sponsored today’s event and we are pleased to welcome Andy Mc Gin and DemetraKatsifli from Blackboard who will be saying a few things to you later and imparting a bit of exciting news.We were lucky that we started out with some collaborative history – Swansea already hosted Trinity’s Learning System and our staff had collaborated with them delivering training and support for about 3 years. When Swansea Met (at that time SIHE) first installed Blackboard basic, our team assisted with the intial training needs. Having these existing contacts across all three institutions was extremely valuable.Although a common platform the installation involved building three separate systems (3 servers per system) all of which are hosted in a robust virtualised environment – as the slide suggests there a lot of stages to go through before the new systems went operational in time for the start of last academic year
Blackboard Academic suite comprises three elementsHaving rolled out the learning system in phase one we are currently in the second phase of rolling out the eLearning portalThe crystal ball behind the third indicates that we don’t yet have a specific starting date – various factors held up the start of phase 2 and we are anxious to ensure that the core community system is well into development before tackling a third consultation stage
During the many meetings we have held it became clear that there were many notions about what this community portal does – some clearly thought that it would be replacing other core systems – to try and explode some of the myths circulating I developed this very simple diagramatic view of what the community system is and how it relates to some of the other systems – describe chart
The whole team worked with Blackboard consultant Patrick Dark and trainer Pepijn Kalis and various staff at SMU to develop a prototype system. The community system is a set of interactive web pages driven by the tabs that users see along the top – clicking on each tab opens a page of relevant information and one of the tabs was also designed as a page one which each user could add their own relevant content. This content is delivered through the boxes that you see on each tab page which are called modules. Editing rights for each module can be easily devolved to the people with that responsibility – so in this example staff in the Faculty of Art and Design would have the ability to dynamically edit and completely change the information in the box without needing to refer to the blackboard team. Various groups within the university who need greater interaction or have a large amount of content are able to have their own organisation (much like a course site) which they manage entirely themselves. Access to TABS, MODULES and ORGANISATIONS can be either global or targeted just to a specific group of students using the institutional roles assigned automatically to each user. This should help to reduce the information overload that students (and some staff!) constantly complain about
As I have mentioned already there have been several consultation exercises with staff and students across all three institutions facilitated by Blackboard consultancy which seems an appropriate point to hand over to Andy and Demetra – but just before I do I would like to mention a couple of other developments some news about one of our other partner companies, Learning Objects. The provide blog, wiki and podcast tools that are used through and integrated with blackboard.
some news about one of our other partner companies, Learning Objects. The provide blog, wiki and podcast tools that are used through and integrated with blackboard. We are just about to start evaluating their new campus pack fusion which will facilitate sharing of blogs wikis and tools not only across different platforms – eg Blackboard and Moodle but potentially, we believe, across institutions as well. During the summer they are introducing the ability to locally archive the content and have very significantly proposed the development of a welsh interface in the near future
Portable and adaptable eLearning road show – used at various learning and teaching events across the institutions
Although not planned in the original project specifications the partnership has enabled us to work together to build a shared bilingual knowledge base – this has been deployed across all three institutions as a searchable help facility for blackboard and e-learning issues – however it will eventually have a wider capability to support at the dissemination of information from the centre of excellenceIt is currently in Beta testing – Now I would like to return to the community system consultation process
Now as promised I am going to hand over to Andy and Demetra – who will be able to give the Blackboard perspective, tell you a little about future product developments and announce some exciting news – apart that is from the £1’s improved performance against the dollar! We are running fairly tight so there may not be time for questions at the end – however our eLearning team along with Andy and Demetra will be around for a while so feel free to ask us questions as the day progresses.
