Engine turbo starters

 1. 1. TURBO-STARTER

INTRODUCTION

 2. 2. TURBO-STARTER

A TURBO-STARTER IS DEVISED TO PROVIDE INITIAL CRANKING TO AN ENGINE (WITH ROTORY/MOVEABLE PARTS) FOR SUFFICIENT DURATION

FOR INSTANTANEOUS AND RELIABLE STARTING WITHOUT GROUND SUPPORT (i.e. SELF-CONTAINED UNIT WITH SHORT STARTING CYCLE)

BY FORCING A HIGH-PRESSURE STREAM OF AIR/GASES THROUGH A HIGH-SPEED TURBINE (HENCE THE PREFIX TURBO)

- THE DRIVE FROM TURBINE IS DIRECTLY TRANSMITTED TO THE ENGINE THROUGH A GEAR MECHANISM.

 3. 3. CARTRIDGE TURBO-STARTER
 4. 4. CARTRIDGE TURBO-STARTER

SOME MILITARY AIRCRAFT LIKE CANBERRA NEEDED TO BE STARTED QUICKER THAN THE ELECTRIC METHOD PERMITS AND HENCE THEY USE OTHER METHODS SUCH AS A CARTRIDGE TURBINE STARTER OR "CART STARTER".

THIS IS AN IMPULSE TURBINE IMPACTED BY BURNING GASES FROM A CARTRIDGE, USUALLY CREATED BY IGNITING A SOLID PROPELLANT SIMILAR TO GUN POWDER. IT IS GEARED TO ROTATE THE ENGINE AND ALSO CONNECTED TO AN AUTOMATIC DISCONNECT SYSTEM, OR OVERRUNNING CLUTCH.

THE CARTRIDGE IS SET ALIGHT ELECTRICALLY AND USED TO TURN THE STARTER'S TURBINE. THE CARTRIDGE MAY LOOK LIKE A GUN SHELL/SMALL ROCKET. CARTRIDGE FIRING IS FOLLOWED BY PINCHING SOUND DEEP BLACK SMOKE AND IT GIVES AN ILLUSION OF ENGINE FIRE.

 5. 5. TURBO AIR STARTER
 6. 6. TURBO AIR STARTER TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS WEIGHT: 8,5 KG AIR FLOW-RATE (INTAKE): 0,9 KG/S TEMPERATURE (INTAKE): 530 °C EXPANSION RATIO: 4,07 OUTPUT SHAFT ROTATION SPEED: 57,700 RPM OUTPUT SHAFT POWER: 118 KW APPLICATIONS: ENGINE: EUROJET EJ200 HOST AIRCRAFT: EUROFIGHTER GMBH TYPHOON
 7. 7. LIQUID FUEL TURBO-STARTER
 8. 8. ADVANTAGES OF TURBO-STARTER OVER ELECTRIC STARTER
 9. 9. ADVANTAGES OF TURBO-STARTER OVER ELECTRIC STARTER

INSTANTANEOUS START (i.e. SHORT STARTING CYCLE). HENCE IT IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE WITH INTERCEPTOR AIRCRAFT.

RELIABLE & INDEPENDENT STARTING WITHOUT GROUND SUPPORT FACILITIES (i.e. SELF-CONTAINED UNIT)

WHEN MULTI BREECH CARTRIDGE STARTER OR LIQUID FUEL STARTERS ARE USED CONSECUTIVE STARTS WITH OUT RE-LOADING ARE POSSIBLE WITH MINIMUM TIME DELAY.

IT REDUCES LOAD ON THE AIRCRAFT BATTERIES & ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR HEAVY ELECTRIC CABLES.

SUITABLE FOR HIGH-POWERED/ HEAVIER ENGINES.
