  • 2. Goal: To create an inclusive, innovative and inspiring process and product that advances the mental and physical health of County residents and employees.
  • 3. Why begin w/ Health Element?
    • Public health, safety & welfare = underpinning of planning and zoning
    • Earliest planning in US to improve cities’ public health, prevent disease, address industrial ills
    • Strongly emerging trends in public health to address “upstream” social determinants of health
    • County is a MAJOR health services provider
    • Proactive, preventative approaches save $$$, lives
    • Numerous links to other element subjects
  • 4. Community Interest and Support for a new Health Element? YES!!
    • Board of Supervisors and Board Committees
    • Health Trust Healthy Communities Grant
    • Federal Communities Putting Prevention to Work Grant (through County Pubic Health)
    • County Planning Office/Dept. of Public Health
    • Other agencies, depts., jurisdictions
    • Non-profits, health organizations, etc.

    • Promote universal design/ability to age in place
    • Promote local food production, urban - rural connections, and

    • RFP, Select and Hire Consultant (done)
    • Create Public Participation Plan
    • Create and maintain project web site
    • Produce Existing Conditions Report & Health Indicators
    • Produce Strategies/Policy Framework
    • Produce draft Health Element
    • Conduct Environmental Review, and
    • Produce/Publish adopted Health Element.
  • 8. Public Participation - when and how?
    • Wellness Advisory Committee (minimum of 4 meetings),
    • Stakeholder interviews (up to 20),
    • Public Workshops (6), in north, central & south County,
    • Survey,
    • Health Element webpage (informative and interactive),
    • Public hearings, and
    • Public comment (phone, email, letters).
    • Translation services available.
