  • 2. Introduction
    Ballistic Missile: Is a missile that follows a suborbital path with the objective of delivering one or more warheads to a predetermined target.
    Agni-III is an intermediate-range ballistic missile developed by India as the successor to Agni-II.
    The ballistic missile has a range of 3,500 km- 5500 km
  • 3. Introduction
    The missile is likely to support a wide range of warhead configurations
    Designed by the Indian government's Defence Research and Development Organisation, Agni III is intended to be a two-stage ballistic missile that is capable of nuclear weapons delivery.
  • 4. AGNI - III
    India on February 7, 2010 successfully test fired surface-to-surface intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) Agni-III from the Wheeler Island, in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Orissa.
    The Agni-III missile tested for the full range, hit the target with pinpoint accuracy and met all the mission objectives.
    This was the fourth test of the missile. The missile was first test fired on July 9, 2006, but failed, However, its second trial on April 12, 2007 and third on May 7, 2008 were successful.
    Aim and objective of the fourth trial was to test the guidance system of the missile.

    It Uses Hybrid navigation including GPS and INS (Inertial navigation System).
    Global Positioning System (GPS) provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to worldwide users in all weather, day and night, anywhere on or near the Earth which has an unobstructed view of four or more GPS satellites.
    Inertial Navigation System (INS): We have Computers, Motion Sensors, Rotation Sensors to Continuously calculate the position, orientation & velocity of a moving object without the need of external reference.

    Agni III an intermediate-range ballistic missile was Designed by the Indian government's Defence Research and Development Organisation
    Agni III is intended to be a two-stage ballistic missile that is capable of nuclear weapons delivery.
    The marker pen like Agni-III missile is 17 m long and 2 m in diameter. The missile is a two-stage solid propellant system with a payload capability of 1.5 ton.

    The sleek missile is equipped with sophisticated navigation, guidance and control systems
    The Agni-III features two solid fuelled stages and with overall diameter of 2.0 meters.
    The first stage booster is made of advanced carbon composite materials. It weighs about 32 tonnes, is 7.7 meters long and diameter of 2 meter.
    The second stage made of maraging steel weighing about 11 tonnes and a length of 3.3 meters.

    During the course of flight, the Missile reached a peak height of 350 km and re-entered into the atmosphere successfully tolerating the skin temperatures of nearly 3000 ˚C.
  • 9. Features
    It can carry a payload of 1.5 tonnes which is protected by carbon-carbon all composite heat shield.
    It can carry any type of warheads.
    The ballistic missile has a range of 3,500 km- 5500 km
    It uses Advanced Hybrid navigation technology including GPS and INS which gives very accurate calculation of positioning, orientation & velocity of a moving object without the need of external references.

    Now India has a strategic advantage against China over composite dialogues as Agni III can cover whole of the China in its range.
