What is deprivation?<br />Definition:<br />Lacking adequate food, shelter, education etc: deprived inner city areas(Collins Concise Dictionary)<br />When an individual’s well-being falls below a level generally accepted as a reasonable minimum for Britain today. (The complete A-Z Geography handbook – Skinner, Refern and Farmer 1996)<br />
  • 3. What is Multiple Deprivation?<br />Multiple deprivation is when different types of deprivation e.g. lack of education, poor health, high crime levels, high unemployment are combined into one overall measure of deprivation.<br />The latest data is called the IMD 2010 and was released in March 2011.<br />
  • 4. IMD 2010<br />Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010<br />Measures quality of life in England and Wales <br />Higher scores = more deprivation/lower Quality of Life<br />Lower scores = less deprivation/higher Quality of Life<br />
  • 5. Types of deprivation<br />The IMD 2010 covers 7 types of deprivation. You can look at the overall multiple deprivation ranking or investigate the following individual types of deprivation:<br />Income deprivation<br />Employment deprivation<br />Health deprivation and disability<br />Education, skills and training<br />Barriers to housing and Services<br />Crime <br />Living Environment<br />
  • 6. The IMD is weighted towards income and unemployment<br />The weightings are listed below. What does this tell you about the main causes of deprivation?<br />Income deprivation (23%)<br />Employment deprivation (23%)<br />Health deprivation and disability (13%)<br />Education, skills and training (13%)<br />Barriers to housing and Services (9%)<br />Crime (9%)<br />Living Environment (9%)<br />
