  • Principles of Cognitivist Theory
    • Mental activity (cognition) is the primary focus of learning
    • Learning is measured by how one thinks—not how one behaves
    • Learning is a mental action—information enters the brain, is manipulated, is stored, and is used.
  • History of Cognitivism
    • According to Wikipedia, Ulrich Neisser first used the term “cognitive psychology” in 1967
    • Other cognitivists are: Jean Piaget, Donald Broadbent and Lev Vygotsky
    • Other psychological groups fault cognitivism for minimizing a person’s thoughts and experiences into numbers and data

  • Cognitivism
    • Cognitive theory Gestalt psychologists believed in looking at the whole person rather than its individual parts.
    • The two major assumptions are:
      • 1. the memory system is processed information
      • 2. a student’s prior knowledge has an important role when it comes to learning.
    • The ingredients for learning are the learner’s prior knowledge and processes (viewing, understanding, and storing)
  • Cognitivism
    • There are three important processes when it comes to cognitive learning, which include
      • Acquiring new information
      • Transforming old information to fit a particular task
      • Evaluating or measuring to see whether the transformed information works
  • Cognitivism
    • Do you think that students learn from interaction, as opposed to passivity?
    • Do you think that learning is sequential and occurs in steps over time?
    • Do you believe that educators should focus on developing learning environments that foster the acquisition of knowledge?
    • Do you think students need time to reflect on their learning and discuss it with others?
  • Technology
    • When it comes to educating with technology, it is important to include specific principles:
      • Interactive assignments
      • Moments of reflection
      • Interaction with classmates and instructor
      • Problem-solving
      • Levels of development
      • Adapt to the learning styles of students
      • Be flexible and adaptive
