  • 24. Article one: SunscreenSo you think you are too pale and want to get a good suntan this summer? Why not? Except thatunless you are careful the sun can make your skin old and leathery and can even give you skincancer. If you must sunbathes (and let’s face it, lots of us think it’s a good idea), then have a look atthese gorgeous guys and babes I found on the beach and see which of them is like you.Roger: I’m the type who always burns. It’s because I’m fair-skinned – and I’ve got red hair andfreckles. That’s why I’m so good-looking! But I still burn unless I use a really high SPF (sun protectionfactor) – and 20 in strong sun.Mike: Yeah I tan easily. People like me who are dark-skinned (with dark hair and brown eyes) are notreally cool but we go even browner in the sun. I still use sunscreen though, something light with anSPF of about 6…Melinda: I have to be careful because I’m the type who burns easily. But I do tan in theend. If you have got fair hair and blue eyes like me you’d better use quite a strongsunscreen (an SPF of 15 to start with)…Alice: Me, I have got built-in protection! I don’t burn, but I don’t’ sunbathe anyway. I meanwhat for? I like messing around on the beach though. 24

  • 27. Article two: Why Sky is Far AwayLong ago the sky was close to the Earth. Men and women did not have to planttheir own food. Instead, when they were hungry, they just reached up and brokeoff a piece of the sky to eat. Many people in the kingdom did not use the gift ofthe sky wisely. When they took more than they could eat, the sky becameangry. Some people threw the extra pieces into the garbage. Early one morningthe angry sky turned dark. Black clouds hung over the land, and a great skyvoice said to all the people, "You are wasting my gift of food. Do not take morethan you can eat. I don’t want to see pieces of me in the garbage anymore or Iwill take my gift away." One man named Adami wasn’t careful. At festival time,he took so many delicious pieces of sky that he couldn’t eat them all. Adamidecided to try to hide the pieces at the bottom of the garbage pile. Suddenly, the sky became angry and the clouds turned black. "You have wasted my gift offood again," yelled the sky. "This time I will go away so you cannot waste meanymore." All of the people cried, "What will we eat? We might starve!" The skysaid, "You will have to learn how to plant crops in the ground and hunt in theforests. If you work hard, you may learn not to waste the gifts of nature." 27

  • 30. Third Article: Ready for AnythingJustin was always prepared. His bedroom was so full of flat bicycletires, bent tennis rackets, deflated basketballs, and games with missingpieces that you could barely get in the door. His parents pleaded withhim to clean out his room. "What use is a fish tank with a hole in thebottom?" his father asked. Justins motto is: "Never throw anything out,you never know when it might come in handy." When Justin was awayfrom home, he always carried his blue backpack. He liked to think of itas a smaller version of his bedroom—a place to store the many objectsthat he collected. It was full of the kind of things that seemedunimportant, but when used with a little imagination, might come inhandy. Justin had earned a reputation for figuring things out and gettingpeople out of otherwise hopeless situations. Many of his classmatesand neighbors sought him out when they needed help with a problem. 30
