Classroom Discussion and Activities on WIDA and CELLA Go to the U.S. Department of Education website at: http://www.ed.gov/nclb/landing.jhtml. • Type in NCLB and review the features of this legislative Act in attempting to close the achievement gap through accountability, flexibility, and choice, so that no child is left behind. • Briefly explain the implications of standardized assessment versus performance-based assessment. Write a brief overview of how issues, such as (a) cultural and linguistic bias, (b) testing in two languages, (c) sociopolitical and psychological factors, and (d) special education and assessing giftedness, affect English learners. Go to the WIDA Consortium website at http://www.wida.us/. • Review the standards and assessment tools. • Create a graphic organizer to demonstrate how these standards improve instruction and assessment practices, e.g., diagram, flow chart, table, concept map, or PowerPoint presentation. Briefly explain how knowledge of assessment needs affects instruction for ELs. Include ways to accommodate ELs language differences, giftedness, and special education needs.
