3. LiquidpenetratesinspectionisanNDTmethodwhichdoesnotharmthe
samplesorpartsbeinginspected.LPTtestisveryeffectiveindetecting
porosity,cracks,fractures,laps,seamsandotherflawsthatareopento
thesurfaceofthetestpieceandmaybecausedbyfatigue,impact,
quenching,machining,grinding,forging,bursts,shrinkageoroverload.As
aresult,itisoftenusedonlotsofmachinedparts,aswellasWeldments
manufacturedproducts,castings,forgingsandotheritemsthatwillbe
plaplacedintoservice.Liquidpenetratesinspectioncanbeusedsuccessful-
lyonnon-porousandfairlysmoothmaterialssuchasmetals,glass,
plasticsandfiredceramics.
MagneticParticleInspection(MPI)alsocalledasMagneticParticleTesting
(MPT)isaNDTmethodforthedetectionofsurfaceandsubsurface
discontinuitiesinferrousmaterials.MPTtestinvolvestheapplicationof
magneticfieldexternallyorapplyinganelectriccurrentthroughthe
materialwhichinturnproducesthemagneticfluxinthematerial.
SimultaneouslSimultaneously,visibleferrousparticlesaresprinkledorsprayedonthe
testsurface.Thepresenceofasurfaceornearsurfacediscontinuitiesin
thematerialcausesleakageofthemagneticfluxatthediscontinuity.

4. Themagneticparticlesareattractedbythesurfaceintheareaofthe
discontinuityandadheretotheedgesofthediscontinuityappearingin
theshapeofdiscontinuity.
RadiographictestrapingisanNDTmethodandtheterm radiography
testingusuallyimpliesaradiographicprocessthatproducesapermanent
imageonfilmorpaper.Althoughinabroadsenseitreferstoallformsof
radiographictesting.Itisperformedonthecomponentsandassemblies
based on the phenomena differentialabsorption of penetrating
rradiation–eitherbyX-raysorGammaraysbythepartortestpiecebeing
tested.Becauseofdifferencesindensityandvariationsinthethickness
ofthe part,ordifferencesin absorption characteristicscaused by
variation in composition,differentportionsofatestpiece absorb
differentamounts ofpenetrating radiation.Unabsorbed radiation
passingthroughthepartcanberecordedonfilmorphotosensitivepaper,
viewed on afluorescentscreen ormonitored byvarioustypesof
electelectronicradiationdetectors.

5. TheUltrasonicTestinginNDTusebeamsofmechanicalwaves(vibrations)
ofshortwavelengthandhighfrequencytotestmainlyweldsandcasts.
Thesearetransmittedfrom asmallprobeincontactwiththesurfaceof
thespecimenanddetectedbythesameorotherprobes.Suchmechani-
calvibrationshavedifferentformsdependingonthedirectionofparticle
movementinthewavemotion,sothereareseveralformsofultrasonic
waves.ThemostcommonandwidelyusedinweldNDTtestingare
compression&transverse(shear)waves.Theycantravellargedistances
infine-grainmetalsandanoscilloscopedisplay(A-scan)showsthetime
thatittakesforanultrasonicpulsetotraveltoareflector(flaw or
back-surface).ApplicationsofUTinvolvesinlocatingthedefectsin
manufacturingprocessesnamelyinwelding,castingsandCorrosion/
Erosionmonitoring&largescalecorrosionmapping.
AVisualInspectionorvisualexaminationofobjects,partsorcomponents
istheoldestandreliablenon-Destructivetestingmethod.Thetestis
appliedtoalmosteveryproductasaqualityassurancetool.Themost
detrimentalunacceptablediscontinuitiesintheobjectsoritemsarethe
surfaceopeningdiscontinuities.Visualscanning,inspectionortesting

codesandstandardsareincludedalongwithanumberofRadiographs

weldsarebeingprovidedforthepractical.Detailedacceptance–rejec-
tioncriteriaarebeingdiscussedduringtheclassforathoroughunder-
standingofthesubject.Participantshouldbeabletocarryoutfilminter-
pretationtotheabovecodesindependentlyuponcompletionofthis
course.
