The International English Language Testing System is widely recognized as a reliable source of assessing the language ability of candidates who wants to study or work where English is the language of communication. This test is designed to give the IELTS candidates an idea of whether their English Language is at the required level.   5. 5. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation IELTS consists of 2 main modules : (1) Academic Module (2) General Module Each module consists of 4 modules such as Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. There is a choice of Reading and Writing Modules according to whether a candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Module. TEST FORMAT
  6. 6. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation The difference between Academic and General : Academic Section is for the candidate who want to pursue their undergraduate or Post graduates courses in the country whose first language is English. General Section is for the candidate who want permanent residence in the country whose first language is English Difference
  7. 7. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation The test modules are taken in the following order : Listening  Listening test consists of 4 sections and you will hear the tape and answer 40 questions. The test consists of 30 minutes: approximately 20 minutes to listen to the tape script and 10 minutes to transfer your answers to an Answer Sheet Provided with the test booklet. In this test both grammar and spelling are of utmost importance. Listening

The reading passages may contain diagrams, charts or graphs and at least one passage will include an argument. If a reading passage contains technical or specialized words, a short glossary is usually provided. Which helps the students to improve their reading skills and get acquainted to higher level English, which in turns the language is used in the colleges or universities in the English Speaking Country. General Reading  It has 3 sections and 40 questions the time duration is 60 minutes. This helps the candidates those who intend to migrate. Reading
  9. 9. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation <ul><li>Academic Writing  </li></ul><ul><li>Academic Writing has two sections and you need to write both the sections in 60 minutes. This section includes Analytical Writing of 150 words and Essay Writing of 250 words. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Analytical Writing  </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Analytical Writing includes information that is presented to you in a form of graph, table, chart, diagram or short piece of text. The description is usually given in the form of a report. You might have to compare sets of data, or use a set of data to support a given statement. Alternatively, you might be required to describe the stages of a process, describe an object, or explain how something works, or how it is used. This section does not require any specialized knowledge of a particular subject. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>General Writing  </li></ul><ul><li>It has two sections and you need to write both the sections in 60 minutes. This section includes Essay Writing of 250 words and Letter Writing of 150 words. </li></ul>Writing
  10. 10. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation <ul><li>Speaking  </li></ul><ul><li>It has three section and you need to speak for atleast 11 to 14 minutes on </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1) Introduction (Personal information) – </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You answer question about your home life or family life, work or study, your interest and other familiar topics which are of a general nature to reveal or which shows your background. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>2) Individual Long Turn (Candidate will have to speak on the given topic) – </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You are given one minute to prepare on a particular topic given by the examiner and he will ask you to speak or will like to listen your views on the particular topic given by the examiner to you. </li></ul></ul>Speaking
  11. 11. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation <ul><ul><li>3) Two way discussion (counter questions): </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>In this section the candidates will be asked some questions based on the topic he or she have spoken in Individual Long Turn. This part of the test requires discussion of more abstract ideas for at least 4 to 5 minutes. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Most of the questions asked in the Sub-test are scripted; they come from a bank of questions prepared by the test authorities. These questions are being continually added and updated. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The Speaking Sub-test Band Score is calculated from a comprehensive checklist of speaking skills in 4 distinct areas of ability such as (1) Fluency and Coherence (2) Grammatical Range and Accuracy (3) Lexical Resource (4) Pronunciation of the words. </li></ul></ul>Speaking

If the goal is to reach a certain level of English Proficiency, success can only be achieved with much practice. It is important to know what an IELTS score in any of the Sub-test means before you set yourself a goal.

The candidate has fully operational command of the language such as appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding. Very Good User: Has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well. Good User: Has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning. BANDS
  14. 14. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation Competent User: Has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. Modest User: Has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field. Limited User: Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Has frequent problems in understanding and expression, is not able to use complex language. Extremely Limited User: Conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur. BANDS
  15. 15. 06/29/11 IELTS Presentation Intermittent User: No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words or short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. Has great difficulty understanding spoken and written English. Non User: Essentially has no ability to use the language beyond possibly a few isolated words.
