I began reading and learning about disruptive innovation about 12 months ago when a client of the firm was making a move into the online education space.
The frameworks we were using to analyse this young industry were irrelevant. We needed a new framework.
So I set about searching and discovered, a model developed by Clay Christensen call disruptive innovation.
What does disruptive innovation look like?
What does a tin of paint, an unmanned fighter plane and an app have in common? They are all examples of disruptive innovation.
The unmanned combat plane that can be controlled from remote location.
A tin of paint that can be applied at low cost to any dwelling to put poer back into the grid.
And apps which can tell you in 30 minutes if you are HIV positive.
These are three examples of disruptive innovation that have come or will come in the next decade.
As startups, you can understand how to identify if your ideas are disruptive by looking for these common traits.
1. Is your idea a cost leader? Ie can you sustain the lowest price in your category.
2. Are you decentralised. Are located close to where the customer is.
3. Does you idea remove experts from the value chain?
