John Carroll wasBorn on January 8,1735. He was the firstRoman CatholicBishop andArchbishop in theUnited States. Hefounded GeorgetownUniversity, which isthe oldest Catholicschool in the U.S.
John Carroll wasborn in UpperMarlboro,Maryland as the 3rdson to Daniel andEleanor Carroll.Their first son diedquickly after birthand their 2nd sondied during therevolutionary war.John Carroll wasbaptized at Boone’sChapel.

Carroll joined the Society of Jesus as a postulant at theage of 18 in 1753. In 1755, he went to the Liege to beganhis studies of philosophy and theology. In 1969 he wasordained as a priest and until the age of 40 he taught atSt-Omer and Liege.
When the Pope Suppressed the Society ofJesus in 1773, Carroll returned to himhome in Maryland.
Carroll was elected asBishop of Baltimore inApril of 1789. Theelection was approvedby Pope Pius VI. He wasOrdained as a Bishop onAugust 15,1790. (theFeast of the Assumption)In 1808, the pope madeBaltimore the firstArchdiocese in the U.S.

Carroll Died in Baltimoreon December 3, 1815. Hisremains are at the Basilicaof National Shrine, whichis open to the public.
In 1886 John CarrollUniversity was foundedwhich was at that timecalled St. IgnatiusCollege. It ran separatelyfrom St. Ignatius HighSchool. In 1923 St.Ignatius College boughtland in UniversityHeights. In September of1923 the school’s namewas changed to JohnCarroll University inhonor of ArchbishopJohn Carroll.
