  1. 1. OSMAN HAMDİ BEYTURKISH ARTISTHe was born in Istanbulin 1842. He was acontemporary Ottomanman of his time. He wasregarded as anintellectual. Heestablished the firstschool of fine arts inIstanbul and was itsdirector for the first 28years.
  2. 2. THE TURTLE TRAINER The turtle trainer is one of Osman HamdiBey’s most original and creative works. It hastwo versions. The turtle trainer, dressed in a red dervishrobe, wants to educate the turtles. Of coursethis was a metaphorical situation. It portraysthis basic social message: Change is difficult,needs much patience. The turtles in thispicture stand for a stubborn, resistant andslow changing society.
  3. 3. He is holding the ney. Butunfortunately the turtles have no ears tohear the ney. He calls for westernization.The turtles are deaf to his ney. The turtle trainer represents a patientintellectual. And the light coming fromthe window is also an important factor.
  4. 4. We have worked with 25 students.
  5. 5. One of our most talented students work on OsmanHamdi Bey.
  6. 6. She did a great job.
  7. 7. We hang it on our school wall.
  8. 8. Some of our students use fabric andpastel together.
  9. 9. We also use trinket. We use walnutto make turtle shells.
  10. 10. We use fibers in this work.
  11. 11. We used linocut technique.
  12. 12. We draw with charcoal.
  13. 13. Elif, our English teacher is good atdrawing and she draw a sample onthe board.
  14. 14. We took photographs .
  15. 15. They used collage technique.
  16. 16. She used pastel while drawing.

  20. 20. We use plasticine to make turtles.
  21. 21. The following pictures show our workswith our students. Our students are 7thand 8th grade students.
