The Best of the Direct-to-Video Horror Films
1. The Best of the Direct-to-Video Horror Films
Any true horror film fan knows that
the best movies out there are not
that easy to find. Of course the big
name blockbuster horror franchises
are played in theatres nationwide,
but where do you find those lesser
known gems that aren’t in wide
release? Some major video
retailers carry decent slasher, gore,
grindhouse, and B horror films.
However, lesser known movies still
are out there. For these you must
go straight to the source, the studio
that creates them.
Full Moon Features is one such studio known for its head B-movie veteran Charles
Band, who’s been making movies since the 70s. Full Moon Features is also known for
such low budget cult classic series such as Puppet Master and Subspecies. Later on
Full Moon Features had other straight to DVD releases often referred to as so-bad-
they’re-good movies like Gingerdeadman, The Killer Eye, and Evil Bong. All are famous
among a specific audience of die-hard fans of gore, blood, guts, & violence in films.
No on the 10th installment of Puppet Master: Puppet Master Forever, Full Moon
Features’ popularity among fans has not ceased one bit. With DVDs, BluRays, Box
Sets, Toy Collectibles, etc. The Puppet Master series is one of the most successful
franchises for the studio. The Puppet Master Box Set containing the first seven Puppet
Master movies plus an extra bonus disc with over 40 Full Moon Trailers for example,
has been a hit seller among collectors.
Another cult classic series adored by fans since the early 90s, is Subspecies. An “Epic
Collection” of the films was released in 2007, which included all the original segments
which were released in VHS. The story follows three college students as they study
folklore in Romania - which leads them to bump into Radu Vladislas - the sadistic
vampire who has returned to his home and killed his father. Radu takes a liking to one
of the students and over the next three films tries to convince her to join him on the dark
side and become a vampire. The series is known for its dark portrayal of the monster
vampire Radu, as well as the stop-motion animation throughout. It even leads to a spin
off called Vampire Journals. If you haven’t seen this series and are a fan of more
original vampire sagas, do yourself a favor and check out the Subspecies Blu Ray at
2. your local video store. After watching, you’ll probably want to own every movie in the
series, in which case there is a Subspecies Box Set available as well.
