The Free Beer Open Source Movement What is FREE BEER? • The first open source beer with a recipe available to the public • In 2001, IT University students in Denmark teamed up with Superflex, a Copenhagen group of artists, created Free Beer to illustrate how the “free software movement” can work outside the digital world • “free as in free speech, not free as in beer” - Richard Stallman (American Freedom Software activist) 2

The Free Beer Open Source Movement How did FREE BEER happen? • 100 students joined together to create the first batch called “ver 1.0” • Created labels and published the recipe on their website www.freebeer.org • Beer brewing community immediately posted complains on the website about the poor quality of aroma, taste, fermentation, etc. • “If this recipe was a source code, it would not compile” 3

The Free Beer Open Source Movement What are the rules? • Anyone can use the recipe to create their own FREE BEER or make a derivative of it • Anyone can make money off the recipe but they publish the recipe under Creative Commons license and credit their work • Design elements and labels are available to brewers and can be modified to to suit as long as its published under the same license • Experience in beer production is limited therefore FREE BEER encourages corrections and tips to improve the recipe (currently at ver 3.0) 4

What makes the organizational model successful? • How do you decide whether to use someone’s advice to improve FREE BEER? Would you use a voting system? Do you establish standards? • How about design? How does the open source nature affect the quality of the design? 5

The Free Beer Open Source Movement Where is FREE BEER now? • Large companies are distributing it as long as they comply with the license. • Available in countries such a NZ, Taiwan, Germany, Japan and so on • FREE BEER brings the idea of Free Software to people who don’t even think about it 6
