  • 2. FSP Retailer Profiles - HMV Group About Established as a gramophone retailer in 1921, HMV Group is a holding company with over 700 stores in the UK under the HMV and Waterstones fascia. It has recently expanded its interests into cinemas and live music ticketing after entering into a partnership with cinema chain Curzon Artificial Eye to open a pilot cinema called hmvcurzon, and acquiring live music group Mama. It is the largest entertainment chain in the UK and is a public limited company on theHistory London Stock Exchange. HMV stands for His Masters Voice.• 1921 - The Gramophone Company (later EMI) opens first HMV music store in Oxford Recent News Street under auspices of Edward Elgar • HMV to close 60 stores as sales and• 1966 - EMI begins expansion of HMV retail shares slump network • HMV like-for-likes slump 16%, and losses• 1976 - With 35 stores, HMV is leading music at the group widen retailer in the United Kingdom. • Disposal of West End, London store• 1986 - HMV becomes autonomous division • HMV charts high street losses despite under Thorn EMI; HMV begins international expansion with first store in Canada diversity HMV Trading Countries• 1990 - HMV enters the United States, Japan, • World Cup hits sales at HMV UK and Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore.
