Glow in Cornbank St James’ Primary Penicuik MidlothianTeacher/School-based mentor Julie Prentice <ul><li>Piloted with my P6 class last session and work continued into this session with P7 class. </li></ul><ul><li>I had no prior experience of Glow before Mentor training though I knew my class were ICT enthusiastic and the parents were supportive of new initiatives. </li></ul><ul><li>95% of the class had access to a computer at home. </li></ul>
A flavour of learning activities we have used which have been enhanced by Glow: <ul><li>Online reading of The Lost World during the Victorian project with associated discussion questions (this offered the option to listen to the audio or read the text or both together!) </li></ul><ul><li>Collaborative research using Glow Meet Interactive Whiteboard </li></ul><ul><li>Expert knowledge workshops (Museum of Flight, Anthony Horowitz, Community Police) through Glow Meet </li></ul><ul><li>Giving children the opportunity to share useful websites when independently studying </li></ul><ul><li>Uploading videos of cross-curricular projects to share at home (Victorian shoebox rooms) </li></ul><ul><li>Peer assessment using Glow Meet Interactive Whiteboard </li></ul><ul><li>Shared discussions across same stage classes </li></ul><ul><li>Giving parents an insight into what is happening in school (particularly useful during Keeping Myself Safe, where a description of the scenario can be put on a Glow discussion for parents and child to answer together) </li></ul><ul><li>Creating a collaborative online glossary for topic words </li></ul><ul><li>Storing weblinks and video clips for children to view again at home </li></ul>
Glow Online Discussion Comments after looking at algae through a light microscope What skills and knowledge have you gained through this activity? The skills i have learned is to use a dipper carefully and to be gentle to the algae and change slides AWESOME!!!!! I know what algae looks like now and it looks totally different from what I thought it would. I also know now to be careful with small things as well as big. I learned that Algae Isn't just floating green stuff. I also learned that some producers moved. The skill that I learned was how to use a micro scope. I have learned that algae can be quite complex despite their size.
Glow Online Discussion Comments after looking at algae through a light microscope <ul><li>What were your thoughts and feelings when you looked at algae close up? </li></ul><ul><li> I felt lucky and like i was a scientist!! I was also surprised and nervous in case i broke anything! </li></ul><ul><li>I was excited and nervous at the same time. I was amazing to see the algae close up. Some of them were hairy, straight, round, moved and were all interesting!! I would certainly jump at the idea of doing it again! </li></ul><ul><li>I thought the first Algae I saw was pretty rubbish, because all it was, was some circles. Then on the 4th or 5th one I was amazed because they moved, I new that someone said that they would move but I never thought they would. It was great! </li></ul><ul><li>I think they looked different Than how I had imagined. The first time we looked at them I only had a chance to look at one type of Algae. When I looked through the microscope then at the bottle I thought "Wow how can they all fit in there." Over all I thought it was a fun way to learn. </li></ul>
Using video clips in Glow. This allows the children to share learning at home and allows for consolidation as the children can watch the video again for themselves in the comfort of their own home!
Using external websites to generate discussion and extend learning from the work undertaken in the classroom.
Using Glow to share tips on how to successfully complete a personal homework project on Ecosystems .
Using the Glow Noticeboard to keep children and their parents reminded of any important homework and class dates.
