For some reason, many people believe that job interviews are not something freelancers have to face. Quite the opposite. Freelancers face job interviews much more often than regular employees. Whether they are formally called such or not, conducted face-to-face, per mail or via Skype, job interviews are an essential part of the freelancer’s business life. This is why you should be prepared for these situations and know how to handle them. Here are a few simple, but vital do’s and don’ts to help you along the way!
2. Job Interviews as a Freelancer
For some reason, many people believe that job interviews are
not something freelancers have to face. Quite the opposite.
Freelancers face job interviews much more often than regular
employees. Whether they are formally called such or not,
conducted face-to-face, per mail or via Skype, job interviews are
an essential part of the freelancer’s business life. This is why you
should be prepared for these situations and know how to handle
them. Here are a few simple, but vital do’s and don’ts to help
you along the way:
3. DO be confident
If you have been invited to an interview or initial conversations
with a potential client have been scheduled, congratulations!
The other side has read your CV, knows something about your
work and past experience and has decided that they want to
take their time to get to know you better. It is important to
remember that at all times during an interview and remain calm
and sure of yourself. You are there for a reason. Confidence is
essential and the right preparation will boost it even more.
4. DO research your client beforehand
Before coming in for an interview or clicking that call button on
your phone or computer, make sure you know what you’re
getting into. Who is your client and what does he do? Most
importantly, review the job/project description once again? Your
client has taken some time to research you, make sure to do the
same in return.
5. DO prepare for likely questions
Based on what you know about your client and the job, you
should try to anticipate the kinds of questions that might be
asked at the interview. Look over similar projects you have done
in your past and make sure you are up to date. There are also
general questions that often get asked. What are your
weaknesses? How much do you expect to get paid? These are
not supposed to be answered spontaneously and require some
research and thought put into them. Preparation is half the
battle.
6. DON’T be unprofessional
You might be a freelancer who is working from home, but that
doesn’t mean you can afford to act or look unprofessionally. On
the contrary, clients might be concerned about whether or not
they can count on you since you won’t be always in the office.
Dress and act like you are the right person for the job. Being
late, sounding or looking like you just jumped out of bed and
other signs of unprofessionalism won’t do you any favors.
7. DON’T slander previous clients
So you are prepared, talking to the client or the person who will
decide whether you get hired or not. They ask you about a
previous client. Even if it felt like hell working for them, try to
remain neutral in your statements. Say that you had your
differences, but don’t rant about how bad your business
relationship was. It’s a small world and the clients might know
each other. More importantly, offending comments will make it
seem like you don’t respect the relationship you have with your
clients thus making potential ones feel threatened.
8. DON’T be dishonest
Another good tip is to try and remain truthful. Don’t lie to the
interviewer about what you can or can’t do or previous
experiences you’ve had. Overselling yourself and blurting out
made-up stories that are supposed to make you look good can
do more harm than good. The truth is very likely to eventually
come out one way or another and having lied can sometimes
irreparably damage your reputation and career.
