Ellison, CEO & Founder of TriVita, Inc.The Christmas season is here again, with twinkling lights, ringingbells and Christmas music, reminding us of the season of good cheerand the joy of gift-giving.But in many homes this year, the lights of Christmas maynot seem so bright because of the turbulent economic times ourworld faces. The tree may not have the size and number of giftsas in recent times. Yet perhaps by reflecting on what is really meaningful and matters mostin life, Christmas 2008 can be one of our brightest in memory. It is the joy and cheer of pastChristmases that bring fond memories – not the size or number of gifts we received. Bob Hope, who lived his life spreading cheer, said, “When we recall Christmas past, we usually find thesimplest things, not the greatest occasion or gifts, give off the glow of happiness.”One of the fondest memories I have of Christmas was when our family went to our ranchin Colorado. Our second grandchild, Chase, was only a couple of months old, and we wereso excited to spend a few days together with our growing family. The night we got there it began to snow and it snowed all the next day, putting down overa foot of snow. The lights on the tree blinked, the fire in the fireplace glowed, but it was theglow of the hearts I remember most. Oh, we had gifts, but I cannot remember one of them;we even had a sleigh ride with horses and bells. But it was little Chase – buried under theblankets, not able to see or speak of the beauty of a white world, with only us to enjoy –that was giving all of us a special glow. It was our 3-year-old grandson Parker, gazing withwide-eyed wonder at the little snowmen casting their different shapes in the shadows ofthe dark forest, who caused our hearts to be filled with cheer. It was the family together –forgetting the daily grind, creating memories with picture taking and sharing the moment –that created the gift that will last a lifetime for me.As we reflect on the past, is it the size or quantity of gifts that bring our fondest memoriesof Christmas? Or was it the gifts from the hearts that glowed with love, peace and joy forall to enjoy?I would like to offer another way to make this Christmas brighter, and that is by givinggifts that last a lifetime. The gifts that last a lifetime come without ribbons and bows, without gift tags and without pretty packages. Christmas gifts that last a lifetime aren’t boughtfrom pricey stores; these Christmas gifts are a whole lot more. What gifts can we give in 2008that everyone can give and enjoy receiving; gifts which could last a lifetime? These are thegifts the angels sang about to the wise men: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peaceand goodwill toward men.”The secret to a brighter Christmas in 2008 is not in elaborate decorations or gifts under thetree and outward show. It is found in the inner glow of the heart that radiates with outer glowfor all to enjoy.Article from Michael Ellison continued on page 27...The secret to a brighter Christmas in 2008 is not in elaboratedecorations or gifts under the tree and outward show. trivita.com4 l December 2008In the year almost past, hope sometimestook a beating. Hurricanes Ike and Gustavpounded the Gulf Coast... home foreclosuresset new records... financial markets crumbled...and a tumultuous presidential election wasfinally decided. Whether or not your candidatewon, it’s time to put aside the negatives of2008 and focus on something we can all control:creating hope in our lives and the lives of thosearound us.All of us in North America and around theworld have been through a lot this year, andthat makes it even more important to stayfocused on the positives. In pursuing our lifepurpose and wellness journey, we can find newreasons to celebrate this “Season of Hope.”As we look forward to 2009, share with ussome of the bright, hopeful spots from the yearalmost gone. Some are small, personal storiesof faith; some are headline items on a granderscale. All are reasons to hope.Volunteers: shelters from thestorms of lifeNo one gives volunteers billion-dollar bailouts, but their contributions number in the billions:8.1 billion, to be exact. That’s the numberof hours volunteered by people of generousspirit throughout the year, as they bail outthose less fortunate. There are some 61 million volunteers in theUnited States alone, according to theCorporation for National and CommunityService. These kind souls spent all thosehours this year fundraising for others, collecting or serving food, donatinggeneral labor, and tutoring or teaching. The top places for people to serve? Religiousorganizations head the list by a big margin.Storms of nature brought out some of thebest in the human spirit in 2008. Thanks inpart to volunteers, and to those who contributemoney, the American Red Cross was ableto deliver needed services, food and suppliesto legions of people harmed by Hurricanes Ikeand Gustav. In Louisiana and Texas alone, the Red Cross provided:• Over 12 million meals and snacks• Overnight stays in shelters for morethan 384,000 people• Over 100,000 personal item kits(soap, toothpaste, etc.)• Over 100,000 clean-up kits, containingdisinfectant, mops and buckets• Mental and physical health servicesto more than 80,000 people.“These kids today:”doing good thingsThere are always young people with selflesshearts who do the right thing just because it’sthe right thing. Here are just two examples:• “National Day of Encouragement,”on September 12, was begun in2007 by some high school studentsin Alabama. They picked the day asa positive contrast to the World TradeCenter bombing of September 11.Feeling that the best way to addressmodern problems is through positivewords and deeds, the teens organizedcommunity efforts. This year, the focuswas conducting blood drives, sendingcare packages to hurricane victims andfirst responders, and sending “encourage-ment cards” for military personnel. From an embattled year, tidings of faith, comfort and the joy of our humanity‘Tis the Season of Hope“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”– Romans 12:12

As part of the program’soutreach, four 11-year-olds traveled toCairo, Egypt to work with students fromeight European, two South American, one Asian and two African countries.Good news about good healthThere were big stories in health news, ofcourse, including breakthroughs in treatmentand prevention of cancer, heart disease anddiabetes. There was also news about ordinaryhabits, though, that could make a difference insmall, everyday ways. A few examples from 2008:• Eating a small piece of dark chocolate everyday may be very heart-smart. According toa study in the Journal of Nutrition, Italianresearchers surveyed over 4,800 peopleto conclude that dark chocolate can greatlyreduce the inflammation that leads toheart disease.• Broccoli could be a life-saver for those withCOPD (chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease, the fourth leading cause of deathin the U.S.). An antioxidant compoundin the crunchy green vegetable was foundto help offset the effects of the disease, according to the American Journal ofRespiratory and Critical Care Medicine.• Green tea might actually protect againstAlzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.German medical researchers found thatan antioxidant in the popular brew hindersdevelopment of a toxic protein common tothose with the two diseases. Their findingswere published in the scientific journalNature Structural & Molecular Biology.“Hope” itself an antidoteto depressionWhen it comes to fighting depression, hopeitself may be the newest wellness discovery. In a 2008 study by researchers at Ohio StateUniversity, a small sample of people withsymptoms of depression was observed. Halfthe group underwent “hope therapy” – eight,two-hour group sessions in identifying goalsand working on self-motivation. The otherhalf did not. Those who went through thehope therapy reduced their symptomsof depression. One happy result of high pricesThousands of people throughout North Americafound new ways to conserve resources this year. Here’s just one:A retired California man helpedpromote “Bike to Work Day” in SiliconValley. The man had been distributingfree bumper stickers for years that urge“Don’t Be Fuelish!”, and when gas pricesshot up, he teamed with the SiliconValley Bicycle Coalition. Participantsin Bike to Work Day received restaurantand sports equipment coupons to encouragethe healthy, energy-efficient habit.Clearly, as these few items illustrate, thereis much to cheer in the events of 2008. Weshare with you the hope that 2009 bringseven more. Dr. Conard is considereda national expert on disease prevention.TienaHealth also conducts clinical trials.Scott Conard, M.D.Founder, TienaHealthFor some people, the wintermonths bring mood changesthat are seasonal but have littleto do with the spirit of the holidays. These people may seem sad becausethey have SAD: seasonal affectivedisorder. Also called seasonaldepression, this condition is oftenblamed on exposure to less sunlightduring shorter days and colderwinter temperatures. While studies continue to find the causes andtreatments for SAD, one thing is clear: Peoplewho have this mood disorder show symptomsthat are very much like depression.Does SAD affect someone you know?Symptoms of SAD, according to the AmericanPsychiatric Association, can include:• Excessive sleeping, overeating and weightgain during the fall/winter months• Extreme fatigue or inability to keepup a normal schedule• Feelings of sadness, loss of feelings, apathy and irritability. That last item is especially interestingto medical professionals like me who pursuethe connections between mood troublesand B vitamins. As you may know, studiesindicate that people with a B-12 deficiencycan experience symptoms including moodswings, mental confusion, forgetfulness andeven psychotic behavior, like seeing and/orhearing things. For some time, evidence indicated that it wasolder adults who tended to have Vitamin B-12deficiencies, but now we know more. As I wrote inthe VitaJournal last month, one study showed thatpeople as young as 26 may be just as lacking inB-12 as some people over 65! This study, publishedin the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, went on to say that regardless of age, those whodidn’t supplement with Vitamin B-12 were twiceas likely to be deficient as those who did.A disorder that favors womenand younger peopleGiven the new evidence about young peopleand B-12 deficiency, it’s important to knowone more thing about SAD: it tends to affectmore women than men, more younger peoplethan older ones. So if you or someone youknow tends to experience depression-likesymptoms in the winter months, check withB-12 update...studies indicate that people with a B-12 deficiencycan experience symptoms including mood swings, mentalconfusion, forgetfulness and even psychotic behavior...trivita.com6 l December 2008by Dr. Scott ConardSeasonal Affective Disorder and B-12: The mood connectionBeating the winter blues

With the economic turmoil swirling aroundus, it’s natural to worry about your personalfinances. Many people are already on alimited or fixed income. But by taking stepsto cut spending, and by following a soundbudget and savings plan, you’ll be well-preparedto stand on solid financial ground in 2009.First things first: create a budgetThe first step to getting your finances in orderis to create a budget; this will help you figure outhow much you can reasonably spend, and howmuch you can save. (Of course, you’ll especiallywant to track and control your expenses duringthe holidays.) Here are the budgeting basics:1. Total your monthly income.2. Subtract your monthly expenses – thisshould include house payments, carpayments, utility bills, insurance, etc.3. Allocate money for savings, groceries, fuel, entertainment, etc.4. Keep track of your spending and reviewyour budget every month to see where youcan make any necessary modifications.A pennysaved is apenny earnedFinancial expertsrecommend that youhave enough savings tocover expenses for at leastthree months. But don’t stopthere if you can do more!• Allocate a set amount of money tocontribute to a retirement plan eachmonth (10% of your income isrecommended). If your employerdoesn’t offer a plan, consider IndividualRetirement Accounts, which are offeredby a variety of financial institutionsincluding banks and credit unions.• Have your employer direct-deposit adesignated amount from each paycheckinto a savings account. This will giveyou a nice buffer for those unexpectedexpenses like home and auto repairs.• Create a special savings account forbirthday and holiday gifts.Easy waysto cut cornersBy making some simple changes, you caneasily cut corners just about every day. Hereare some pointers for keeping more of yourhard-earned money:• Shop smart. Check grocery ads eachweek to find the best deals on food. Then, prepare a list and stick to it when you’re inthe store. Whatever you do, don’t go to thestore hungry! Also, clip coupons, buy storebrand products, and avoid pre-packagedfoods, which are often more expensive, not to mention unhealthy. Buy toiletriesand cleaning supplies at discount stores,as they tend to cost more at grocery stores.• Cut out the extras. Take a look at yourmonthly bills. Paying for cable TV thatyou seldom watch? Eating out too often? Not reading the magazines you’re payingfor? Cut out the things that you reallydon’t need and you’ll find yourself withextra money each month. These caninclude cups of joe at the coffee shopor movie rentals. Brew coffee at homeand check out movies for free at yourlocal library.• Fight impulse spending. It’s easy tobuy on a whim. Something catches youreye and suddenly you’re spending yourgrocery money. If you think it’s somethingyou absolutely can’t live without, put iton an “impulse list” and wait 30 days. Ifyou still want it after 30 days, shop arounduntil you find the best deal. Ideally, waituntil it’s on sale. You don’t have to be a financial wizard tomanage your money wisely. By sticking to yourbudget and making some simple changes in yourlifestyle, you can rest a little easier about yourfinancial future. Perilla seedoil is just such a food!Perilla seeds have been used as a source of foodand medicine for thousands of years. As inter-est in traditional remedies has grown in modernmedicine, scientific studies have been carried outon perilla seeds as a possible remedy for allergies. This is notable because the number of peoplediagnosed with allergies (allergic rhinitis) hassignificantly increased in recent years. A personexperiences an allergy attack when the tiny cellsthat line the sinuses burst. These are called “mastcells” and they are filled with histamines, thesubstances that cause allergy symptoms. Pollenand other allergens rupture these cells and releasethe histamines in large amounts. Anything thatstabilizes these cells and keeps them from burst-ing gives welcome relief from allergy misery. What scientists are learning is that the oilfrom perilla seeds is a powerful anti-inflammatoryand antioxidant. It not only reduces inflammationin the sinuses, but in all areas where mast cellsrelease inflammatory histamines: the sinuses, lungs, joints, intestines and skin. So, perillaseed oil acts as an anti-inflammatory torelieve allergies, gastritis and even asthma. That’s why I put perilla seed oil in OmegaPrime:different oils reduce inflammation in differenttissues. Fish oil reduces inflammation in thearteries, flax oil in the reproductive tissues, evening primrose oil in the brain and bones andperilla seed oil in the sinuses, lungs and intestines. Is there any solid research on these applicationsfor perilla seed oil? Absolutely!Studies conducted on people with asthma showedthat perilla seed reduced the inflammation in thelungs, reduced the hyperactive immune systemleukotrienes in the lungs and improved lungvolume. At the same time, doctors measuredcholesterol levels and found that perilla seed oilreduced total cholesterol, LDL (bad) cholesteroland triglycerides. Also, perilla seed oil raised thelevels of beneficial, protective HDL cholesterol. In the past, medications called bronchodilatorswere used to open the airways in asthmaattacks. These medications worked pretty wellin emergency situations; however, they didnot stop the inflammation and they did notaddress the immune system’s role in allergiesand asthma. Newer, stronger drugs weredeveloped that both opened the airways andreduced airway inflammation. A milestone inmedicine was achieved when a class of drugswas developed called leukotriene inhibitors.Leukotriene inhibitors were “the missing link”in allergy and asthma treatment, as well as withirritable bowel syndrome. They reduced thehyperactivity of the immune system and providedlonger relief than anti-inflammatory drugs alone.Soon, however, the dark side of these medica-tions emerged as many patients contracted seriousinfections from a suppressed immune system.Perilla seed oil was shown to be a remarkableleukotriene inhibitor that did not suppressthe immune system! It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory. Perilla stabilizes the mast cellsso histamines are not released. What is more, perilla seed is showing positive results in studiesagainst human cancer cells, irritable boweldisease and depression. All without any sideeffects. What a marvelous discovery! When you take TriVita OmegaPrime, you’regetting so many benefits in this physician-approved formula – including the remarkableeffectiveness of perilla seed oil.Perilla seed oilbursts withOmega-3 fatty acidsNo wonder it’s such an important partof our OmegaPrime formulationBy Brazos Minshew, Chief Science OfficerThePerillaplantofferspowerfulanti-inflammatorybenefits.
12 l December 2008This is the time of yearwhen holiday parties andfamily gatherings multiplyour opportunities for fun, and alsofor overindulging in one of the biggestthreats to good health: refined sugar.Since 1983, the individual consump-tion of refined sugar in the UnitedStates has increased almost every year,to an astounding 160 pounds. As the“no-nutrient” additive that’s hidden inmany of our day-to-day foods, sugar isharming our health, and we need todo something about it.As you may know, sucrose (the white stuff usedin baked goods and candy bars) has no realnutritional value. It was created for our tastebuds, and boy was it a huge hit! Unfortunately,we tend to consume entirely too much of it, andwe pay a heavy price. In fact, overconsumptionof sugar can lead to a number of serious healthconditions, including obesity, osteoporosis, heartdisease... even cancer – all diseases directlyaffected by what we eat.So, how much is too much when itcomes to sugar? There’s no established RDA(Recommended Daily Allowance) for sugar;however, according to the United StatesDepartment of Agriculture, no more than10 grams should be consumed each day. Manypopular kids’ cereals have between 12 to 14grams of sugar in a single serving – whichexceeds the daily limit in just one sitting.Cutting back on sugar may not be easy, especially during the holidays, but it is apositive step towards your own wellness! Here are seven helpful tipsto reduce your sugar intake:1 Read the label. Look for “sugars”to see the amount in grams per serving. If you don’t see it listed, look at the“ingredients” section. Can you find any ofthe following terms: Sugar, corn sweetener, dehydrated cane juice, dextrin, dextrose, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, lactose or sucrose? These are just a fewsynonyms for sugar. Avoid foods thatplace these names close to the top of theingredients list. Choose foods that arelow in sugar and high in fiber or protein, which will give you energy and keep youfeeling full.2 Eat fruit. If you are craving somethingsweet like a candy bar or dessert, grab apiece of fruit instead. It may not sound asappealing, but fruit contains natural sugarthat will satisfy your sugar craving. It alsocontains fiber, to help slow down theabsorption of sugar in your body andstabilize your blood sugar.3 Drink club soda.Whether you call it“soda pop,” “soda” orsomething else, callthese sugary softdrinks off limits.Just one can of colahas about 40 gramsof sugar. The waterin soda pop is sosugar-concentrated itdoesn’t do much forsatisfying thirst. Ifyou really like thebubbly aspect of sodapop, try switching toclub soda, which has noadded sugar. And,if it’s not sweet enough, mix in half acup of freshly squeezed orange juice,or no-sugar-added apple juice.4 Brush your teeth and gargle.Have you ever tried brushingyour teeth when you are cravinga late night sweet snack?Nutritionists tell usthat sweets don’t tasteas good after you’vebrushed yourteeth or cleanedyour mouthwith antisepticmouthwash. This can be agood diversionfor your craving.Extra Sugar = Extra TroubleSeven ways to slice your sugar intakeLook for “sugars”to see the amountin grams per serving.
1-800-991-71165 Take Non-Acidic Vitamin C.Believe it or not, studies have shownthat a very high intake of Vitamin Ccan reduce blood sugar levels and lowerthe damaging effects of sugar. AddVitamin C to your vitamin regimenand you may notice reduced cravingsfor sugar. TriVita offers a premiumNon-Acidic Vitamin C, available inboth crystals and time-released tablets.6 Walk. Eating sugar raises yourserotonin (a chemical that transmitsnerve impulses believed to play a keyrole in the biochemistry of depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety). Highlevels of serotonin can elevate yourmood. Walking can actually have thesame effect. Instead of waiting for dessertafter a meal, get up and take a walk.7 Control portions. If you justcan’t pass up that exquisite dessert, then go for it! But don’t overdo it.Controlling the portions of sweets thatyou eat will help you manage your overallsugar consumption. I did, and after 30-40days I went in for a follow-uptest. My total cholesterol did godown, but so did the good cholesterol, and mytriglycerides didn’t change at all. I did a little onlineresearch and decided that I wasn’t comfortabletaking any statins, so I asked my doctor if I couldstop the Lipitor.* He then suggested I take fish oilto help control my cholesterol. So that’s when Itried TriVita’s OmegaPrime. I took OmegaPrimereligiously for 30-40 days before my follow-uptest. When I got my results back, I learned that mytotal cholesterol was under 200, my good choles-terol was over 80 and my triglycerides were cutin half. I was thrilled with the results, and so wasmy doctor. He hasn’t mentioned Lipitor since! Her dearest friend, Jannette, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. She had several courses of treatment available, including chemotherapy, but decided to take amore holistic treatment approach. With Lynn’sencouragement, Jannette made SublingualB-12 and Adaptogen 10 Plus part of her dailynutritional regimen. Now, nine years latershe is doing much better and Jannette’s doctorhas encouraged her to continue doing whatshe’s doing. Lynn definitely feels that TriVitaproducts have contributed to Jannette’srenewed good health.Lynn has her own share of stress. Justrecently Hurricane Ike swept through herhome in the Clear Lakes area of Texas. Luckilyher neighborhood was spared the worst ofthe damage. “I think Sublingual B-12 andAdaptogen 10 Plus helped me keep myequilibrium during this difficult time,” she says.In spite of her frenetic life, Lynn findstime for one of her favorite hobbies –working with anything electronic – especiallycomputers. She has incorporated this interestinto the workplace by volunteering for severalmajor technical projects for Southwest Airlines.Just recently she helped develop a cashlesspayment system that allows passengers tobuy cocktails during a flight without usingmoney. Once again she is quick to creditSublingual B-12 for helping her maintainfocus and concentration.Clearly, life is anything but dull for Lynn. She explains her vibrant attitude by sayingthat “you have to hang around people whoare young to stay young.” No doubt her bubblypersonality has helped people get throughthe most difficult flights. She was especiallyhonored to be hand-picked to be a flightattendant for the papal entourage whenPope John Paul visited the United Statesand Canada in 1987.So, if you’re ever flying with Lynn, she just might suggest that you skip thesugar-filled soda and try an ounce or twoof Adaptogen 10 Plus instead. “I just love getting thosereferral checks!”Lynn with her friend Jannette
trivita.com18 l December 2008In life, inevitably, wewill face circumstancesand events that willchallenge our emotionalhealth and well-being.Sometimes they are smallfrustrations and disappoint-ments, such as struggling tolose weight only to regain it, or getting overlookedfor a promotion at work that you felt you deserved.Other times the problems we face aredeep, gut-wrenching traumas. Many peoplemay be facing or have faced financial losses,a marriage breakup, debilitating diseaseor perhaps the untimely loss of a lovedone. When these problem situations happento us, we have a choice in how we react. We can resist and become frustrated, bitter, and exhausted by spending all of our energyregretting or longing for the past. Studies haveshown that continually feeling angry, frustratedor depressed by events beyond your control isextremely unhealthy. If you have a hard timegoing with the flow or facing the facts, youmight be putting yourself at risk for serioushealth problems. On the other hand, we can deal with ourdisappointments and circumstances bydeveloping acceptance. The concept ofacceptance is powerful. It’s about comingto terms with reality, no matter how unfairor unpleasant it may be. Practicing acceptancecan help ease the tension and stress, whileallowing us to see our situations more clearly.Release the feeling of powerlessnessIn life you will face circumstances that youcannot control. Feeling powerless is actually acontrol issue. You will need to recognize thatthere are people, problems and things that areuncontrollable and unchangeable and out ofyour power to completely affect or change. When you feel out of control and powerless, remember by accepting what IS at the moment, you can rely on God for strength and power.According to scripture, “God is my strength andpower: and He makes my way perfect,” II Sam22:33. It is not your strength alone, but alsoGod’s, that enables you to accept what youcannot control or change.Relinquish the pain of the pastMany times it is easy to blame our misfortuneon someone else, saying, “If my financial advisorhad only warned me, I wouldn’t be in this mess.”Or, “If Susie had only told me she was unhappybefore it was too late, we might still be together.”“If onlys,” don’t change the circumstances.Only you can accept what “IS.” We can’t cryabout unpleasant circumstances and expectthem to change. Accepting what “IS” anddeciding to change your feelings about itcreates an atmosphere to help heal your pain.Reclaim possibilitiesthrough acceptanceMake this a season of healing and changeas you develop the practice of acceptance. The healing and liberating power of acceptancecomes when you choose to accept the experienceyou have had or are having at this moment,no matter what it is. That doesn’t mean we haveto be happy with our current circumstances, butacceptance means you acknowledge and acceptwhere you are in life at this moment. In everyproblem that we face, no matter how dark itseems there is opportunity for somethingmagnificent to appear. In every problem thatwe face, no matter howdark it seems there isopportunity for somethingmagnificent to appear. The Healingand LiberatingPower ofAcceptanceby Dr. Judy“Accepting does not necessarily mean ‘liking,’ ‘enjoying,’or ‘condoning.’ I can accept what is – and be determinedto evolve from there. It is not acceptance but denial thatleaves me stuck.” – Nathaniel BrandenJudy Ellison, Ph.D., is a success coach, author, motivational speaker and psychologist. 1-800-991-7116 VITAJOURNAL l 19As we count downthe days to enda tumultuous year, this joyful season of hopeand love is especiallyprecious. It’s the timeto celebrate a blessedbirth that occurred invery humble surroundings,a birth that gives us cause for hope and loveevery day of every year. This is also the time to ask an importantquestion: Will your new year of living beshaped by the vision you believe God has foryour life? Specifically, will your days in thenew year be purposeful, and centered on whatis truly important? As the verse from Habakkuk (above) states,“Write the vision and make it plain.” Here,God was instructing the prophet Habakkukto literally write down His words of revelationso that they would be clear to all. The phrase“...that he may run who reads it” suggestsa herald, going from place to place witha message so that others can see it.The power of a message, written downWhat will be your message to yourself andto others to see you through 2009 withrighteousness and faith? There is power inwriting things down, and I encourage youto do so. If you’re not certain how to begin,I have some ideas that may help.First, make an appointment with yourself:write a note on your calendar on a specificday and time. This appointment is special;it’s when you sit by yourself and focus on thehappiest or most important aspect of what itmeans to you to have a relationship with God.The next step involves a bit more writing. Thinkabout a time when someone in your life reallymade you feel loved, and gave you hope whenyou needed it most. Write this down. Then, think of a time that you were able to share hopeand love with someone else. Write this down.your body, His Temple1 Cor. 6:19-20“Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” – Habakkuk 2:2Let God guide your 2009 life visionby Chaplain Gene HendersonGod has a plan and a purpose for each andevery one of us this coming year. You might want to keep these special writingsin a journal so you can turn to them whenneeded. Having this type of journal helps mereturn to the basics that guide us throughoutthe year: the love of God, our relationshipwith Him and our relationships with others. These steps will help put you in a spiritual, thankful frame of mind, and will prepareyou to write down your own vision for 2009.A life of purpose, day after dayWhat are your goals for living out God’spurpose for you in the new year? These mightinvolve short-term goals, such as acting onthe Golden Rule with others. Or perhaps you’reworking towards a long-term goal, such as workingthrough your church or civic group to improvethe lives of those less fortunate. The importantthing is that you reflect on how your life canembody God’s purpose for you in small, everyday ways.By developing your personal, spiritualvision for the new year, you’re really statingyour life purpose. Put another way, it’s your“mission statement:” for what purpose didGod put you here?God has a plan and a purpose for each andevery one of us this coming year. With faith, hope and love, we can look forward to thechallenges of the future without fear. Whateverwe take on, whatever 2009 may bring, we arenot alone. God will be with us.May you share the joys of this season witha happy heart. Merry Christmas and HappyNew Year.Think about a timewhen someonein your life reallymade you feelloved, and gaveyou hope whenyou needed it most.Write this down.
trivita.comNitric oxide or NO is one of the mostimportant molecules in our body.Like a policeman directing trafficin a busy intersection, nitric oxide directsthe communication between the busiest cellsin the body: brain cells, blood cells, immunesystem cells and cells from every body systemwhere communication is critical. Nitric oxideis so important that no organ in your bodycould function without it. In fact, a Nobel Prizein Medicine was awarded to three scientistsin 1998 responsible for discovering its actions. It keeps our blood pressure normal, helpsus think clearly, helps our body fight off infec-tions, and even prevents the development ofblood clots and atherosclerosis (hardening ofthe arteries). Many of the “diseases of aging”are no more than a deficiency of nitric oxide.Recently, my team tested Adaptogen 10 Plusfor nitric oxide activity. This study helpsconfirm the incredible value of Adaptogen10 Plus. We discovered that it containsnatural NO metabolites that help to restorenormal nitric oxide biochemistry within ourbody. This important benefit is in additionto its high antioxidant capacity and adaptivestress molecules. As we age, our body gradually loses its abilityto produce nitric oxide. Stress, pollution anda nutrient-deficient diet also reduce our nitricoxide reserves. A healthy diet, sleep, exerciseand the rest of the 10 Essentials (see pg. 2)contribute to nitric oxide activity – and togood health! As a professor of medicine, I supervise cardio-vascular research in the heart health field. My field of specialty is nitric oxide: how toget it and how to keep it. The people in ourresearch center suffer from a host of nitricoxide-related disorders including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes,Alzheimer’s disease – the list seems endless. In every case I see that the higher we can raisethe nitric oxide levels, the better the patientresponds. Restoring nitric oxide production hasbecome one of the main strategies at treatingand protecting against many diseases. It makes sense that Adaptogen 10 Pluswould activate a high amount of nitric oxidebecause research has revealed that mosthigh-antioxidant foods nourish NO. TriVita’sAdaptogen 10 Plus helps us combat stress,a nitric oxide killer. The amount of NO in Adaptogen 10 Plus hasbeen shown to help protect against vascularinflammation, reduce injury from a heartattack or stroke and restore NO homeostasis(a sense of balance) in animal models. Thisunique blend of antioxidants and nitric oxidemetabolites is essential for brain and hearthealth. 1-800-991-7116 VITAJOURNAL l 21HAPPIER COULD MEAN HEALTHIERVictoria, AustraliaDo happiness and good health go hand-in-hand? That’s what researchers at the Centre for Behavioural Researchin Cancer set out to find. Their study, published in the September/October issue of the American Journal of HealthPromotion, showed that happiness and life satisfaction can have a positive effect on good health. In 2001, 9,981 adults aged 18 years and older were asked to report on their health (self-rated as excellent, verygood, good, fair or poor); if they had any health conditions that limited activity; and to assess their physical health.A follow-up survey was conducted two years later.Good health was reported 1.5 times more by adults who indicated they were happy most or all of the time thanby those who reported being happy only part or none of the time. Life satisfaction was associated with betterhealth in the initial survey as well as in the follow-up survey.“Everything being equal – regardless of your age, gender, whether you smoke, drink or exercise, if you’re happy andsatisfied with life now, you’re more likely to be healthy in the future,” said lead study author Mohammad Siahpush,Ph.D., University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Public Health.CALM, ACTIVE PEOPLE LIVE LONGER, ACCORDING TO STUDYBaltimore, MarylandLongevity is associated with “being conscientious, emotionally stable, and active,” according to the NationalInstitute of Aging. A study published in the July/August issue of Psychosomatic Medicine researched this linkbetween personality traits and lifespan.Data was taken from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (the longest running study on aging), to assessthe personality traits and longevity of 2,359 people.Personality traits that were linked to a longer life included emotional stability, organization, discipline, conscientiousness and resourcefulness. Traits linked with a shorter life included depression, anxiety, angerand emotional instability.WINTER BLUES LINKED TO BRAIN CHEMICAL LEVELSToronto, CanadaUsing positron emission tomography (PET) technology, researchers at the Centre for Addiction and MentalHealth in Toronto found that levels of serotonin (a mood-altering brain chemical) may be lower in the falland winter. Because serotonin helps regulate mood and energy levels, this may help researchers understandseasonal affective disorder and other seasonal mood changes.Study author Jeffrey Meyer said that this discovery is “an important lead in understanding how seasonchanges serotonin levels. This offers an explanation for why some healthy people experience low moodand energy in the winter, and why there is a regular reoccurrence of depressive episodes in fall and winterin some vulnerable individuals. The next steps will be to understand what causes this change and howto interfere with it.”THE LATEST SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THAT AFFECTS YOU, YOUR HEALTH AND YOUR LIFEResearch and focus

Every holiday season is a good time to playit safe when it comes to gifts for little ones.Especially this year, with toy recalls makingheadlines, we all want to be sure that thepresents we present in love bring nothingbut joy to children.Lead paint, choking hazards and dangers tovision are the top three villains in children’sgift safety, according to Prevent BlindnessAmerica, a national non-profit group. Whilesome toys might immediately conjure up animage of accidents waiting to happen (thinkof dart guns), others aren’t so obvious: evenart supplies, used improperly, can cause harm. For the sake of the children in your life, be surethe toys and gifts you choose are appropriate fortheir age and development level. VITAJOURNAL l 25Peggy doesn’t do things halfway. Not long after her very first hikealong the Appalachian Trail in her50s, she hit the adventure trail for aseven-day trek. She often hikes witha 40-pound pack on her back. Tocelebrate her 60th birthday, shejumped out of a plane at 10,500feet to skydive. And when it comesto sharing the TriVita wellness story,it looks like the sky’s the limit.Like many Affiliate Members, Peggy’s successis rooted in her own product experience.A TriVita infomercial prompted her to tryTriVita Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acida few years ago. “I was truly amazed at theresults,” she recalls. “The product does justwhat it says it will – gives me energy andfocus. And every product I’ve tried sincehas exceeded expectations.”Her personal product list soon expandedto Peaceful Sleep (“It worked the veryfirst night I took it”), and most recentlyNutraFruits. “I love it! I could feel theextra vitality within just a few hours.”“It doesn’t feel like selling;it feels like helping people.”Soon she started generating referralbusiness, first to family, then to friends, then to others who wanted to know howshe stayed so energetic and active. At 63,her activity schedule includes long dailywalks in her South Carolina community, several gym workouts a week, and of course, extended hikes. Last spring, she covered 125miles in eight and one-half days, carrying that40-pound pack of basics.“People are always asking me where I getmy stamina, and so TriVita just naturallycomes up,” she notes. “I know the productshelp, so it doesn’t feel like selling; it feelslike helping people.”From casual referrals, real income-generating potentialSince she first started generating referralsa few years ago Peggy has been earningrewards, “But I didn’t realize you couldreally make referrals a business untilI read another Affiliate Member’s storyin the VitaJournal.” Now she has hersights on some serious goal-setting forTriVita income.“The TriVita products I’ve used haveexceeded my expectations. That makesme trust all the rest of the products fromTriVita,” Peggy says, “and also makes iteasy to recommend them to others.”With such a positive experience and attitude, what Peggy would change if she could go back intime isn’t surprising: “If I could do it over, I’d trymore TriVita products sooner, and talk them upmore to everyone I know.”“…quality of life to do my shareand let the Lord do the rest.”Active in her church, and proudly marriedto her husband of 44 years, Marvin, Peggy’s lifeis clearly robust physically, emotionally andspiritually. “At my age, if I stopped being active,it wouldn’t take six months ‘til I gained 20pounds and had to grab onto something tostand up from a pew in church,” she observes.“What I’m after is quality of life to do my shareand let the Lord do the rest.”With Peggy’s “go-for-it!” approach, that isn’ta problem.Peggy is hiking up theincome trailSharing her wellness journey isn’t about selling,it’s about helping others discover TriVita’samazing productsAffiliate Member Spotlight“TheTriVitaproductsI’veusedhaveexceededmyexpectations.ThatmakesmetrustalltherestoftheproductsfromTriVita.” –PeggyHer personal product list soon expandedthen to others who wanted to know howshe stayed so energetic and active. Article from Michael Ellison continued from page 2...It isn’t the material gifts that give us our most preciousmemories; it is the gifts that were given from thehappiness of the heart, in the words that were spoken– the recognition of value and worth of the individualthat we cherish. I am not suggesting there are nothardships that come in times like these, but I amreminding us that life is much more than the materialthings we chase. Even in the wealthiest of homes, if love, joy, forgiveness, peace, recognition, respect and laughterare not there, then it is really only a lifestyle measuredby material things, not by quality of life.It is in the challenging times of our lives that we aremost in touch with what is really meaningful and lasting.Whether that challenge is from a health, financial orpersonal crisis, it is then that we reach out for whatis most important. Our world economic woes are notbecause of a few greedy men on Wall Street, it is becausea world of people became greedy and lost connectionwith what is most meaningful in life. While we may bepaying a horrible financial price, it may be one of the bestthings that could happen to us. It brings us back to focuson values, relationships, wellness and our relationshipwith God. I believe Christmas 2008 can be brighter thanmost as we focus on giving the gifts that last a lifetime.TriVita is a company committed to wellness. Whilemany pursue health to avoid disease, we encourageeveryone to pursue wellness. Wellness is having thephysical ability to do the things you love to do, to havepositive daily emotions of faith, hope, forgiveness andlove, and to have a relationship with God, knowingHis purpose for your life. It is from wellness that youcan give to others the gifts that last a lifetime – notjust at Christmas, but every day and to every personyou come in contact with.Make Christmas 2008 brighter by givinggifts that last a lifetime!TriVita is a company committedto wellness. While many pursue healthto avoid disease, we encourage everyoneto pursue wellness.1-800-991-7116 VITAJOURNAL l 27Winter can be loads of fun – the perfect time to bundle up and spend theholidays with family and friends. But the fun can quickly disappear if you’respending the days in bed with a head cold – or worse. With a few sensibleprecautions, you can make the best of this winter without the headache. Here are four tips to keep you healthy:1. Dress for the weather. It’s important to dress warmly toavoid serious health conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia(when the body’s temperature drops far below normal). Make sureto select the right garments to face your day:• A hat. Since body heat is lost through the head,a hat that covers your ears is best for keeping warm.• Mittens. Gloves are fine, but mittens provide even moreheat for your hands.• Boots. Waterproof, insulated boots can help maintain yourfooting in ice and snow, and keep your feet warm and dry.2. Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia or frostbite.• Hypothermia. Confusion, dizziness, exhaustion andsevere shivering are all symptoms of this condition.Seek medical attention immediately if you experienceany of these symptoms.• Frostbite. Gray, white or yellow skin discoloration, numbness or waxy-feeling skin – are all signs youmay have frostbite. Seek medical attention immediately.3. Be cautious when traveling. Winter weather and holidaytraveling can be a dangerous duo. Keep the following in mind:• Try to allow extra time when traveling so you are notrushed on the road.• Check weather conditions and heed travel advisories.• Keep a survival kit in your car in case you run intoa winter storm. This kit should include blankets, food, flares, gloves and a first aid kit.4. Don’t spread germs. It’s important to take simplemeasures to stay healthy and not get others sick:• Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.• Wash your hands often with anti-bacterial soap.• Stay home from work when you are sick and seea healthcare provider if your condition worsens. With these basic tips we can all keep the fun in winter, and leave dangerand illness out in the cold.1234Stay Safeand Wellthis WinterTop four tips to skate throughthe cold months ahead
