Does this havespecial meaning for women?Pastor Judith: Spiritual health providesmental stability and emotional freedom. Becausewomen tend to perceive relational undercur-rents, they may carry emotions and thoughtsthat are toxic. This can lead to stress andanxiety and physical deterioration. Is therea way to increase spiritual “fitness” too?Pastor Judith: Yes, by aligning ourselveswith the truth of what God says about Himself,about us and our time here on the Earth. I urgethe women I counsel to study the character ofGod, to read and understand His faithfulness,His promises and His strength toward us. Thishelps us to unclog the pipeline to our sourceof supply: Him.Say to the Lord each day, “Lord, I know I havea limited perspective so I am going to expresswhat I’m thinking and feeling and ask You topurify that and to clarify that through YourWord.” This lets us adjust our thoughts andfeelings and come away with a better perspective.Chaplain Gene: It sounds like you’re sayingthat spiritual, emotional and physical health areall intertwined. True?Pastor Judith: Absolutely. When we talkwith God daily, when we express ourselvesthrough prayer and align ourselves with God’sperspective in our lives, it lets us “re-calibrate”in a spiritual sense. Our emotions and ourhealth will be better, because we make betterchoices when we think better about ourselves.Women matter. Our health matters. Pigments in fruits and vegetables may protect against bone loss, study suggestsBoston, MassachusettsCarotenoids (antioxidant pigments found in fruits and vegetables) appear to have a protective effect againstbone loss, it was reported recently in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.Researchers from Tufts University, Hebrew SeniorLife and Boston University studied data on 334 men and540 women in the Framingham Osteoporosis Study. Using data from food questionnaires, they evaluatedthe intake of carotenoids (including alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and luteinplus zeaxanthin) in association with bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip, spine and radial shaft (bonein the forearm).Carotenoids (lycopene in particular, which is found in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon) appeared to havea protective effect against loss of BMD in the lumbar spine for women and in the hip for men. Researchersconcluded: “Although not consistent across all BMD sites examined, these results support a protective role ofcarotenoids for BMD in older men and women.”A Cup of tea?
