Ellison, cEO & founder of TriVita, Inc.What an exciting time of the year. A time when mothers havejust been honored by their children on Mother’s Day and a timewhen birth and new life seem to be evident all around us in nature– again highlighting to us all the importance of mothers.May is the time when we dedicate much of the VitaJournal towomen’s health. We focus our attention on the special formulationsfor women, as well as feature inspiring stories of women involvedwith the TriVita mission of helping others experience wellness.I encourage you to read the article about Tina Gonda on pages 16-17. She is passionate aboutwellness and helping others experience it. I trust many women will be inspired by this month’sarticles about nurturing your dreams and goals and not letting anything hold you back.I like what Eleanor Roosevelt said: “You gain strength, courage and confidence by everyexperience in which you really step up and look fear in the face. You must do the thing youthink you cannot do.” Pursuing wellness and creating greater wealth for your life purposes isan important part of your life at any age. It is not over until it’s over.Susan and I just returned from Hawaii where we met a waitress in a little beach café whoinspired us with her story. She was already a grandmother in her mid 40s, had been divorcedfrom an abusive husband, and had a family to support as a waitress, but was still launching herown Hawaiian shirt clothing line. She radiated with a special glow while telling us she wishedevery woman could just hold on to their dreams and go for it no matter how improbable itlooked. I can’t wait to feature her in an upcoming VitaJournal, as it is an incredible story ofthe pursuit of wellness and purpose. Oh yes, she has been introduced to TriVita andloves our mission. This is such a great time to be involved with TriVita after our successful kickoff of SonoranBloom™ Nopalea™ in Phoenix, Arizona. • trivita.com4 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and WellnessFor women, sticks and stones aren’t the big threatto bones – it’s osteoporosis, the disease that has ahorror movie nickname: “the bone thief.” Unlikemost horror movies, though, this health story can havea happy ending.First, a look at just what osteoporosis is, and who it strikes. This“silent disease” has no outward symptoms: it gradually steals massand strength from bones, leaving them porous and weakened. Itsmain targets? The hip, spine and wrist. The damage leaves victimsvulnerable to falls and fractures, and that can lead to even more scarysituations – including death. While “the bone thief” can attack people of any age and either gender, women and mature adults are most likely to be affected. Osteoporosisis not an inevitable part of aging, and it is a big deal. One of the latestin a long line of studies about osteoporosis indicates that in peopleover age 60, any bone fracture dramatically boosts the risk of dying. The Australian study, published in the Journal of the American MedicalAssociation, looked at more than 4,000 people over a period of almost20 years, and found these dramatic results:• After even a minor bone break like a wrist fracture, the riskof death zoomed by 42% in women and 33% in men.• After a hip fracture, women were twice as likely to diethan before, and men, three times as likely to die.• These jumps in death risk lingered for years: 5 years forall fractures, and up to 10 years after a hip fracture. What brings on bone loss?Time steals bone from us all. Around age 30, bone (which is livingtissue made of collagen protein and calcium phosphate, a mineral)reaches a peak of density and strength. After that, bone starts beinglost at a faster rate than it’s created; the process really speeds up aftermenopause, and continues into postmenopause due to decreased levelsof the hormone estrogen.People most at risk are small, thin-boned Caucasian and Asian womenwith a family history of osteoporosis, and their risk increases with age.The bone-breaking risk goes up in general for people who smoke, don’texercise, drink alcohol, take certain medications and don’t get enoughcalcium and Vitamin D.Stop, thief! Detection and preventionSadly, the first clue some people get about osteoporosis stealing theirbones is a sudden fall that fractures a hip or makes a spinal vertebracollapse. At this stage, or before, during a wellness exam, a healthcareprofessional may order a bone mineral density (BMD) test. Thispainless test can detect the current stage of bone loss, or identify boneissues before they become a problem (“osteopenia” or low bone densitycan be a sign of osteoporosis to come). There are medications for osteoporosis, and several other everydayways that everyone can help protect their precious bones. Healthcareprofessionals recommend three main strategies to turn away the bonethief and help stay strong:lock out“the bone thief”Protect your bones from osteoporosisOsteoprosis is not an inevitablepart of aging, and it is a big deal.Women’s health alert:

Thismineral is vital to bones; if you don’t getenough over your lifetime, you’re leavingyourself wide open to bone theft. Sincemany people consume less than halfthe recommended amount of calcium,it’s important to take up the slack: eatfoods like low-fat dairy products, darkgreen, leafy vegetables and calcium-fortified foods. Taking quality calciumsupplements is also suggested for manypeople. This is especially important aswe age, because our bodies become lessable to absorb calcium efficiently.2. Dose up on “D.” Vitamin D is a keyplayer in helping absorb calcium andmaintaining bone health. We get it viasunlight and foods like egg yolks andliver. D supplements are smart for many, especially older people and anyone duringwinter months who tends to stay indoors.3. Bone up on exercise. Any activitythat has you working against gravity isworking for your bone health; it’s calledweight-bearing exercise. You don’t haveto lift weights or run marathons: justwalk, hike, jog, climb stairs, play tennisor dance.Bonus: Since exercise helps improve yourmuscle tone and strength, coordinationand balance, it boosts your overallhealth. And, with stronger muscles andbetter balance, you’ll help avoid the fallsthat can lead to fractures.Stay safe to help stay healthySince falling down can fracture bones, avoidingfalls is especially important for anyone withweak or brittle bones. This is why exercise isso helpful to stay balanced and coordinated. Inaddition, these tips can help you stay uprightand safe:• If needed, use a cane or walkerfor added stability.• Wear traction-soled shoes.• When sidewalks are slippery, walk on grass.• Tread carefully on polished floors thatcan be dangerously slick when wet.• Indoors, avoid walking in socksor slick-soled slippers.• Don’t use scatter rugs. All carpets andarea rugs should either have skid-proofbacking or be secured to the floor.• If possible, have handrails on bothsides of stairways. Here’s a glimpse of the impact ofosteoporosis in North America alone:• Affects 44 million Americans,68% of them women.• Affects some 1.4 million Canadians:one in four women and more thanone in eight men over age 50.• One of every two women andone in four men over 50 in theU.S. will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lives.• Almost all of the 30,000 yearly hipfractures in Canada are caused byosteoporosis. By the year 2030, thenumber is expected to quadruple.the bone toll in northAmerica: $15.9 billion123Buy OneBoneBuilderget the second one50% oFFgood through 5-31-09

Ischemic strokes are far morecommon and occur when a blood clot stopscirculation to an area of the brain. It blocksyour blood from delivering nutrients and life-sustaining oxygen to delicate brain tissuesdownstream. In minutes the brain tissue dies.Stroke becomes more common the older we get.Yet, 28% of those having a stroke are under age65. In fact, stroke can even occur in a fetus stillin the womb! What are some of the causes ofstrokes among the young?the age differenceIt’s true that people most at risk for strokes areolder adults, particularly those with high bloodpressure, who are sedentary, overweight, smokeor have diabetes. However, the exact same riskfactors that cause strokes in older adults causestrokes in younger people. It is more common for younger men to suffera stroke than younger women. It is more likelythat a person who is a member of certain racialminority groups will suffer a stroke than aCaucasian. The greatest disparity in risk occursin young African-Americans who are two tothree times more likely to experience a strokethan their Caucasian peers.Vascular disease and high blood pressure arecommon risk factors for strokes. High bloodpressure contributes to 70% of all strokes.Smoking and drug abuse dramatically increasethe likelihood of strokes. Stress, depression andmigraines also contribute to stroke risk.Solutions to strokesLifestyle modifications can really help you reduceyour risk of a stroke. If you eat a diet full of fruitsand vegetables, low in salt and bad fats, you willreduce your risk. Exercising every day will reduceyour risk. Of course, abusing drugs, includingtobacco and alcohol, must be strictly avoided.Losing weight, achieving optimum fat-to-leanratio and stabilizing blood sugar and cholesterolare all important steps in reducing your risk.In addition, nearly all people at risk for strokes –young or old – have disturbances in theirblood chemistry. A homocysteine level above10 umol/L increases your risk; the higher thenumber, the greater your risk. Fortunately, strokerisk can be reduced among young and old with afew, special nutrients – especially HCY Guard®.Lives can be saved for literally pennies a day!S.t.R.o.k.E. – Remember the firstthree letters... S.t.R.Many effects of a stroke can be reversed if it isquickly recognized, diagnosed and treated. Nowdoctors say you can often recognize a stroke byasking three simple questions:S Ask the individual to SMILE.T Ask the person to TALK and speaka simple sentence coherently.R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE ofthese tasks, call 911 immediately and describethe symptoms to a dispatcher.Strokes don’t just affect older peopleanybody can have a stroke – even an infant!By Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officerone stroke thathit close to homeTriVita’s own keala Stanthad a stroke at age 28Many people think that strokes only happento the old and infirm. In fact, anyone –even infants – can have them. Keala Stant, operations manager for TriVita’s Care Center, can attest to that. At age 28, this otherwisehealthy mother of two children suffered astroke that seemed to come out of nowhere.“I always considered myself athletic so it wasunexpected,” she says. “Later, I discoveredthat I had certain conditions that increasedmy chances for a stroke, including migraineheadaches and a heart defect.”Keala was getting ready for work one morningin September 2008 when she had difficultytalking and her left side went numb.Assuming that she would feel better, Kealawent ahead and dropped her kids off atschool. However, once she arrived at workKeala’s condition worsened and she realizedshe needed help. Keala was able to call anambulance and she was rushed to thehospital, where extensive tests revealedthat she had suffered a stroke.Luckily, Keala’s recovery was quick. Her speechquickly returned to normal and the feeling inher fingers and hand eventually came back.Keala also had surgery to repair her heart. She istremendously grateful to her TriVita co-workerswho held a prayer session on her behalf. “I don’tthink I would have done as well without theirprayers,” says Keala. “Now I’m taking actionto make sure this doesn’t happen again bywatching what I eat and exercising 30 minutesa day.”str
    • Heather Andrews,Member“I have finally come to therealization of how much mymother means to me. As astay-at-home mom of threechildren, I am now remindedof how much she did for meand my siblings. She was also a stay-at-homemother of three. We went hiking and swimmingevery weekend and rode horses and dirt bikes.I truly show my appreciation and love to herregularly. I call my mother at least every otherday. I never forget her birthday or anniversary. When the kids and I go to the park we alwayscall to see if she would like to join us; whenthe parade comes every summer she’s invited, and of course every fall we go to the fairtogether. Every spring the kids and I spendseveral days helping my mom clean her flowerbeds and start her garden. I occasionally buymy mom a bouquet of flowers, but I feel thatthe time my mother and I spend together isthe most valuable gift. I always tell my mother Ilove her and always thank her for all her help.”Susan Wright, affiliate Member“My mom is the type ofwoman who ‘never needsanything,’ so it took me untilmy late 20’s to learn how mymother received appreciation.I think this is a key factor inour relationships as everyone is different. How I like to show appreciation isn’t alwaysthe way that is important or most effective tosomeone else. So when I learned that my motherloves to receive gifts (could be a wildflowerpicked by the stream) I started sending her little‘just because’ gifts throughout the year (couldjust be a card letting her know I appreciate her). For major holidays like Mother’s Day andher birthday, I really try to pick a gift throughher eyes – what is it she would really like ifshe were here doing the picking for herself.”Janine theiss,TriVita Employee“My mother is the mostimportant woman in mylife. Enjoy biking alone orwith friends and family. But first, here are sometips to get you started.Picking the right bikeDepending on your fitness and comfort level,as well as where you want to ride, you havenumerous bicycle options – everything from“comfort” bikes to mountain bikes. Visit localbike shops and research online to find out what’savailable. Check consumer ratings to find outwhich bikes others have been pleased with –and which ones to avoid. Most importantly, you will want to consultan experienced salesperson to help you findthe bike that’s right for you: the right type –and the right fit. If you don’t have the right sizebike, injuries and accidents are more likely tooccur. Above all, pick a bike that is comfortable, especially the seat. If possible, try to rent a bikesimilar to the one you’re interested in; take it fora test run to see how it works for you.Safety first: wear a helmetA bike helmet is a must. Be sure to choose onethat is certified by the Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC) or the American NationalStandards Institute (ANSI). Also, make sure it:• Sits level on your head• Fits snugly• Is brightly colored for increased visibilityGetting startedIf you’re not used to riding, don’t try to go formiles on your first ride – unless you want to beso sore the next day that you can’t move! Startout reasonably and gradually increase your paceand distance. It’s always fun to exercise with friends. Considerjoining a biking club in your area. A quickInternet search or visit to a bike shop can helpyou find a biking group. The Internet and bikeshops are also great resources for bikepath/trail information.Be sure to follow state and local laws governingbiking – both in the city and on trails. Theselaws may include everything from where you canlegally ride your bike to which safety equipmentis required.log miles – without leavingyour homeIf you prefer to exercise indoors or if you havebalance problems, you can get all the benefits ofbicycling without leaving your home. You may find that thisamazing vitamin helps you stay upbeatand maintain a balanced mood, keepenergy levels steady throughout theday, stay mentally sharp and enhancememory. But the potential benefitsdon’t stop there. Research continuesto find new and exciting connectionsbetween B-12 and many aspects ofgood health, and I’d like to focus onone in particular that made headlinesjust a few months ago.It was a small but significant study, publicizedin medical journals and some mass media. From the University of Oxford, England camethis dramatic finding: People with lower levels ofVitamin B-12 were six times more likely to havebrain volume loss (also called brain erosion) thanthose with higher B-12 levels. This was a long-term study, spanning five years, involving 107 adults ages 61 to 87. The objectivewas plain and simple: What’s the link betweenVitamin B-12 levels and brain erosion? To findthe answer, according to results published inthe medical journal Neurology, participantsunderwent annual blood tests, MRIs, physicalexams and memory tests. None of the studysubjects had any impairment in mental functionwhen they began the project.Less B-12 equals more brain erosionAt the end of the five years, all the participantshad B-12 levels within the normal range;however, the differences in brain volume weresignificant between those in the normal-lowrange and those in the normal-high range.Again, those people with the lowest levelsof B-12 were six times more likely to suffermeasurable brain erosion than those with thehighest levels. As an advocate of B-12 supplementation withTriVita’s unique, quality formulations, I wasthrilled – but frankly not surprised – to learnabout this latest evidence. For some time, clinical evidence has shownthat those who have a B-12 deficiency canexperience symptoms caused by decreasedmental and nerve functioning. These symptomscan include mental confusion and forgetfulness, mood swings and even psychotic behavior likeseeing and/or hearing things.Because of these associations, one of the firstthings I do when people complain of theseproblems is make sure they are getting enoughof the essential vitamins like B-12.Why many are at riskof B-12 deficiencyIf you’re over 40, a strict vegetarian, or haveB-12 updateby Dr. Scott ConardResearch shows the positive connectionBig, healthy brains and B-12...clinical evidence has shownthat those who have a B-12deficiency can experiencesymptoms caused by decreasedmental and nerve functioning.trivita.com12 l VITAJOURNAL Celebrating 10 Years of Health and Wellness

In aneconomy where grocery store sales are reporteddown in all categories, sales of gluten-free foodsare up, and steadily climbing.Gluten-free eating requires education and abit of vigilance at first. It is important to knowthat oats, rye and barley contain gluten. Thefood manufacturers can have many names forgluten, including but not limited to hydrolyzedplant or vegetable protein, MSG, malt, maltflavoring, durum and semolina. However, thereare many delicious whole foods alternativesto choose from. With a little knowledge ofwhat you can eat and where to find gluten-freeproducts and recipes, you will soon adapt tothis new lifestyle and will be feeling betterthan you thought possible. For those who love to bake, gluten-free bakingis a bit of an art form, but can be done. • 1-800-991-7116 May 2009 l 15the calcium debate –and what it means to youCalcium is an essential nutrient for all animaland plant life. It begins life as a mineral calledcalcium carbonate – a rock. Plants extractcalcium salts (calcium chloride) and use themin creating energy. As the food chain continues, herbivores (plant-eating animals) consume theplants and concentrate the calcium into bothliquid and solid states. Solid calcium helps createhard, compact tissues like teeth and bones.Liquid calcium resides inside your cells, nervesand all of your muscles – including your heart!Every time a muscle contracts it uses calcium. There is also calcium in your bloodstream. The debate about calcium begins with thesource: Is calcium from stone (carbonate), oystershell or eggshell as good as calcium from fruitsand vegetables? Is calcium from milk and beefequivalent to calcium from nuts and fish? Thereis no simple answer; however, certain forms ofcalcium are good for certain applications.Calcium from bone meal and MCHC(found in abundance in VitaCal-Mag D) helpsstrengthen teeth and bones. Studies have shownthat MCHC may improve and increase bonedensity as much as 6% in a single year! Let merepeat this: In clinical trials where bone densityis measured, the greatest benefits to our teethand bones came from MCHC. There’s anotherreason for the high quality of VitaCal-Mag D; itcontains five different forms of chelated calciumfor maximum absorption.Reversing osteoporosisMCHC is the specific collagen in yourbones. You’ll find it in both VitaCal-Mag Dand TriVita’s Bone Builder. It makes senseto supplement your bones with this specialcollagen. Even more remarkable is the fact thatpeople who take enough MCHC build new, healthy bone cells even into their senior years.Homocysteine (HCY) breaks up collagen andreducing HCY is critical to preventing osteo-porosis. TriVita’s Bone Builder is the perfectpartner to HCY Guard®because it includesnutrients that help reduce homocysteine.Reducing the effect of stress is important inconserving your bones. When you are understress your body’s response is to steal mineralsfrom your bones to fuel the “fight or flight”response. TriVita’s Bone Builder contains theamino acid GABA, which helps reduce thiseffect of cortisol and allows minerals to goback into your bones when you sleep.Speaking of sleep, your body produces a hormonecalled NAMOT (related to melatonin) when youare in a deep sleep. This hormone signals yourbones to begin repairing themselves. Metho-xytryptamine (5MT) is the protein that yourpituitary gland uses to produce NAMOT, and weinclude this vital protein in TriVita’s Bone Builder.Growing new boneThe best way to manage osteoporosis is toprevent it. Children and adults up to age 30should take a calcium, magnesium and VitaminD supplement every day. I also encourage peopleto focus their diet on leafy, green vegetables, getat least 20 minutes of direct sunshine on 40% oftheir body every day and perform weight-bearingexercises most days of the week.Regardless of your age or bone density you canslow bone loss, delay the disease process ofosteoporosis and start producing new, healthybone cells. TriVita’s VitaCal-Mag D is ideal forpeople under 30 years old and those with thelowest risk factors. TriVita’s Bone Builder isdesigned for people over 30 who have risk factorsfor osteoporosis. The good news is that you can add back up to6% of new, healthy bone mass every year if youfollow these steps – no matter how old you areor how thin your bones are. • 1-800-991-7116 May 2009 l 21Many women gain weight around themiddle in their mid-40s, early 50sand beyond. This accumulation offat in the abdominal area has been dubbedthe “menopot.” The exact cause of this weightgain has been blamed on a number of thingsincluding genetics, fluctuating hormones andreduced physical activity. The good news? With healthy lifestylechanges, you can help control – and reduce– the dreaded menopot. This is good newsnot just from a vanity standpoint but froma health standpoint as well: abdominal fat– especially what’s called visceral fat – canincrease your risk of heart disease, diabetesand even certain cancers.Visceral fat surrounds your organs, can bevery dangerous and is the result of a sedentarylifestyle. The menopot is generally composedof subcutaneous fat, the fat that lies betweenyour skin and your abdominal wall. Althoughless dangerous than visceral fat, it can still bedistressing. The bottom line is that any type offat is unhealthy.Lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can not only help reduce the risks to yourhealth, but they can also help “whittle yourmiddle” – and help you minimize the menopot.Burn away the menopotReduced physical activity can contribute toincreased weight in the menopause years. Plus,as people age, they lose lean muscle tissue, which burns calories. By maintaining or evenincreasing your activity level, you can helpkeep the menopot at bay.The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines forAmericans from the U.S. Departmentof Health and Human Services suggeststhat adults get at least 2.5 hours a week ofmoderate-intensity physical activity or 1.25hours of vigorous physical activity per week.If you’ve already noticed you’re getting amenopot, you may want to increase thatamount to 5 hours a week of moderate-intensity activity or 150 minutes of vigorousactivity... or more! Be sure to include bothaerobic and strength (resistance) training. The key to consistent activity is doing some-thing you enjoy. Make exercise fun with someof these calorie-burning activities:• Swimming • Bicycling• Dancing • Gardening• Walking • TennisThe menopot menuYour metabolism naturally slows down withage. This means fewer calories are neededto sustain your current weight. However, many people may continue to eat the sameamount of food. So, it comes down to theold adage: To lose weight, you must burnmore calories than you consume. But thatdoesn’t mean you have to go hungry!A study at Pennsylvania State Universityshowed that eating foods that fill you upwith water and fiber can help you lose weight.Participants in the study who ate morelow-energy-dense, water-rich foods such asfruits and vegetables, lost more weight thanparticipants who went on diets that reducedportion size and fat intake.Follow these basic diet principles from the 2005Dietary Guidelines for Americans (issued by theUSDA and Health and Human Services) to geton the right track:• Emphasize fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and fat-free or low-fat milkand milk products• Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts• Eat foods low in saturated fats, transfats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) andadded sugarsNeed some food ideas? Try adding thesetasty and healthy foods to your diet: • Chicken breast • Fish fillets • Lean beef • Lean turkey • Lean pork • Salmon • Asparagus • Bell pepper • Broccoli • Cabbage • Cauliflower • Carrots • Celery • Green beans • Spinach • Squash • Beans • Bran/fiber cereal • Brown rice • Oatmeal • Pita bread • Wheat germ • Apples • Bananas • Blackberries • Blueberries • Cherries • Cranberries • Grapefruit • Grapes • Kiwi • Nectarines • Oranges • Raspberries • Tomatoes • ZucchiniBy increasing your exercise and sticking to awell-balanced diet that is high in fiber, wholegrains, and fruits and vegetables, you can helpminimize the menopot. • All love beginswith having asense of value andappreciation of one’sself. Each of us, maleand female, musthave a feeling thatwe matter and havesignificance. This feeling developsout of our earliest life experiencesand shapes our core self-value asan adult.Healthy self-loveAristotle, the Greek philosopher, suggested2,000 years ago that before you can give andreceive love you must first be a lover ofyourself. Aristotle considered a healthy self-love the foundation on which all relationshipsare built. In an article by therapist Sarah LeahBlum, she states, “Loving yourself is thegreatest love of all and we all need to loveourselves to have a full, healthy, balanced life.”Love addiction andtoxic relationshipsHowever, many people do not have ahealthy start in life and their needs wentunmet by their primary caregivers. Eitherfrom childhood neglect or abuse, they havean “empty hole” in their heart.Quite often, such people look for the feelingof love in all the wrong places. They becomeaddicted to the feeling of love to fill the emptyhole. When we think of addiction we think ofalcohol, drugs, gambling and food, but love isa powerful feeling and is a primary emotionthat can be as addictive as cocaine. While men aren’t immune, it’s more oftenwomen who are in unhealthy relationships, recognize that it is bad for them, but areunable to break it off. Here are somequestions to consider if you wonder aboutyour relationships:• Do your family and friends tellyou they are concerned for you?• Do you make up your mind to leaveand go right back again when youfeel lonely?• Does the relationship make youmiserable but has an unnaturalhold on you?If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a love addiction. If you think that you may be in a toxicrelationship there is always hope. Admittingthe truth is the first step, followed by seekingout expert support to regain emotional health.Romantic loveHealthy romantic love is a wonderfulexperience, which can encourage bonding andintimacy. A woman’s need for love can befulfilled by being held and caressed and toldhow much she is loved and appreciated. It isessential for a man to put his feelings of lovefor her into words. This can be difficult for many men. Onaverage, according to some experts, a manspeaks only 2,000 words a day compared to7,000 words spoken by a woman. A womanlikes to talk and especially about her feelings. She wants to know she’s pleasing her man andthat he loves being with her.Men who find it difficult to say the wordsmight try these techniques to start “talking”and sharing more with their partners. Startwriting love letters. Once or twice a month, share your feelings with your spouse. Findpretty blank cards and write your messagesof love.Saying “I love you” is the most beautifulgift you can give. • “...A wife of noblecharacter... is worthfar more than rubies.”– Proverbs 31:10Since May marks Mother’s Day throughoutNorth America, I thought it fitting to makewomen the topic of this month’s feature. It’salso fitting that a woman, Pastor Judith Cristof City of Grace Church in Arizona, sharesher insights on spirituality and women todayin this exclusive VitaJournal interview.Judith Crist has servedalongside her husband, Dr.Terry Crist, as one of theExecutive Pastors of City ofGrace since it was founded. Her passion is to see peoplediscover and live theabundant life found in JesusChrist. Judith attendedAyers Music Conservatory in Dallas, TX andalso majored in music ministry and Biblicalstudies at Jackson College of Ministries inJackson, MS.chaplain Gene: What does “virtue” meanto you?Pastor Judith: To me, virtue is the insidesource and force of goodness that we cancultivate for the purpose of influence. Myperspective is from both the Old and NewTestaments and the real world we live in.chaplain Gene: In Proverbs 31, we read of a“virtuous woman” whose noble character hasher working from dawn ‘til dusk, planting fields, weaving cloth and tending to the needs of herfamily. How does this translate to women inthe 21st century?Pastor Judith: Proverbs 31 can leave a negativeand positive impression. The negative is thatsome may look at these tasks as a “to do” list; awoman might think that it sets an impossiblestandard, so why try?your body, his temple – 1 Cor. 6:19-20Virtue and today’s woman:Tapping into “the inside sourceand force of goodness”by Chaplain Gene HendersonThe positive impression is the advice thewoman is giving to her son: she’s counselinghim on the kind of woman he should seek out.She is actually taking the limits off who awoman can be, not saying every woman hasto be it all. The woman described has foundher wisdom and confidence and has developedher resources: she’s gained the respect of herfamily, her peers and interacts with those ingovernment and business. She is cultivatingher skills to influence her world... really, tofulfill her purpose.chaplain Gene: So you don’t see Proverbs 31as restricting women?Pastor Judith: No, on the contrary, it releasesthem. We don’t have to be men to make adifference, to be leaders. We can be uniquelywho God designed us to be. When we haveconfidence and the humility to take Godlycoaching, women can be an unstoppable force.Remember, the Proverbs 31 woman didn’t justsit back and wait for things to happen. Shereally embodied what you might call “proactiveengagement” in her world.chaplain Gene: You mentioned virtue in theNew Testament; please explain.Pastor Judith: Virtue also stands out in theNew Testament, Luke 8:40-48, when an ailingwoman in a crowd reaches out to touch Jesus’garment. Jesus says that he felt the virtue flowingout of him to her and she was healed. If wepartner with God, we will have the source andforce of goodness that brings the transformationthat God wants. This power for transformation is not aboutrebellion, or hard-hearted arrogance. It’s theconfidence in the God that created us, the faiththat He will use us, and that He will bring Hissolutions through us.chaplain Gene: Women today have experiencefilling many roles: businessperson, co-worker,partner, parent, caregiver for aging parents, friend, well, the list goes on. Is it possible toreally focus on your life purpose when you wearso many hats?Pastor Judith: Absolutely. We may think ourlives are busier than in Biblical days, but theguiding principles for virtue and purpose reallyremain unchanged. I have two guideposts forpurpose in life: The first is God’s Word; since Hecreated us He is the only one who has the rightto define us. The second is our gifts, our talents, the things that give us passion.Mother Teresa used her passion, her goodness toserve, and was heard. That’s not just about thelife of women; that’s the Christian way.1-800-991-7116“If we partner with God,we will have the sourceand force of goodness thatbrings the transformationthat God wants.”– Pastor Judith CristMay 2009 l 23

    • It’s official: Exercise helps improve quality of lifeBaton Rouge, LouisianaIt’s commonly believed that exercise improves quality of life but few studies have set out to prove it...until now. Researchers in Baton Rouge discovered that as little as an hour of exercise per week can helpimprove quality of life. The six-month trial, which appeared in the February 2009 Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 430physically inactive, postmenopausal women with high blood pressure. The women were divided into anon-exercising group, and three exercising groups that walked and rode stationary bikes. The first groupexercised about an hour a week, the second for two hours per week and the final group exercised aboutthree hours per week.Women in the exercise groups reported better perceived health, increased energy and a better sense ofwell-being. The women in the three-hour per week exercise group reported the greatest improvements.Researchers found that even if the women lost no weight as a result of the exercise, they still experiencedimprovements in quality of life.Diet soda linked to diabetes and metabolic syndromeHouston, TexasDrinking at least one diet soda a day may increase your risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, said astudy published in the January 2009 Diabetes Care. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors whichtogether increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.Study results showed that those who drank diet soda daily had a 67% greater risk of diabetes and a 36%greater risk of two components of metabolic syndrome – high fasting glucose and high waist circumference.Researchers concluded, “Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with otherdietary and lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control and eventual diabetes.”Unhealthy lifestyle habits can double your risk of strokeNorfolk, United KingdomPoor lifestyle choices can double your risk of stroke, according to researchers in the February 2009 BritishMedical Journal. Smoking, excessive drinking, physical inactivity and low blood Vitamin C levels – indicatinglow intake of fruits and vegetables – were evaluated.Over 20,000 men and women aged 40–79, part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Study(EPIC), completed health and lifestyle questionnaires between 1993 and 1997. They had no history of strokeor heart attack at the beginning of the study, and were followed an average of 11 years. Participants weregiven a point for each of the following lifestyle habits: not smoking, drinking only 1 to 14 units of alcohol perweek, exercising regularly and blood Vitamin C levels that indicated a daily intake of five servings of fruitsand vegetables. Those who scored zero points had a 2.3 greater risk of stroke than those who scored four. The more points partici-pants had, the more their risk of stroke decreased. For a two-week period, one twin brushed teeth and tongue and theother twin brushed teeth and tongue and flossed. After two weeks, it was discovered that the twins who hadnot flossed had significantly more gum disease-causing bacteriathan the twins who had brushed and flossed. Additionally, those in the flossing group experienced a 38% reduction ingum bleeding.Researchers concluded that “tooth and tongue brushing plusflossing significantly decreased the abundance of microbialspecies associated with periodontal disease and dental caries[cavities] after a 2-week program.”The research was part of a five-year study funded by theNational Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.calORIE RESTRIcTIOn IMPROVES MEMORyMünster, GermanyCutting calories may improve memory, it was reported inthe January 2009 The Proceedings of the National Academyof Sciences. The three-month study involved 50 normal to overweightadults ranging in age from 50 to 72. Participants were dividedinto three groups: one group had their calories reduced by30%, another had a 20% increase in unsaturated fatty acidswithout changing their total caloric intake, and the thirdgroup did not change their diet.A memory test was administered both before and after thestudy. Those in the calorie restriction group showed an average20% improvement in their verbal memory scores. Researcherssuggest these improvements may be attributable to improvedinsulin sensitivity and reduced inflammation, both of whichplay a part in improved cognition.Article from Michael Ellison continued from page 2...you for attending this 90-minute event, we are givingaway a free 32 oz bottle of Nopalea, as well as a DVDabout the healing plants in the Sonoran Desert. Some people are a little unsure if they have the ability toparticipate as an Affiliate Member. Sincethe brain is the body partthat recognizes pain, muchof my practice involvestreatment of pain. Thisarticle focuses in on migraines, a particularlycommon, painful disorder. Why women get more migrainesMigraine is a specific type of headache thatafflicts 18% of all American women, triplethe prevalence as in men. Its hallmarks area moderate to severe throbbing pain on oneside of the head that is worse with physicalactivity, lasts for hours to days and is associatedwith nausea, vomiting or light and noisesensitivity. Women tend to get more migrainespartly because of fluctuations in estrogen thatoccur as part of the menstrual cycle.Different varieties of migrainesThere are two main types of migraines.About 85% of migraine sufferers havecommon migraines. The other 15% haveclassical migraines, which are similar tocommon migraines, except that they arepreceded by a specific warning that signalsthat the headache is soon going to start. These warnings are called auras. The mostcommon aura is a “fortification,” which isseeing jagged white lines that start near thecenter of one’s vision and then graduallymove to the periphery.Supplements may helpIf you see a neurologist for possible migraines, odds are excellent that the doctor will order abrain imaging study such as a CT scan or MRIto exclude rare but serious secondary causessuch as a brain tumor. Doctors generally treatmigraine by prescribing preventive medicationsto make the next headache less likely to occur, and “abortive” medications to stop an impen-ding headache. Many prescription medicationsare available, but several over-the-countersupplements including magnesium, CoQ-10,riboflavin and feverfew are also effectivemigraine preventives, and can work just aswell as prescription medications. What triggers migraines? An equally important part of treatingmigraines is removing underlying triggers, which unfortunately abound in today’s fast-paced culture. Such triggers include:• Stress• Sleep deprivation and poor sleep hygiene• Too much caffeine• Obesity• Poor nutrition• Overuse of pain pills• Smoking• Skipping meals• AlcoholRecently, I saw a very successful business-woman who has migraines. She smokes twopacks of cigarettes a day, drinks six caffeinatedsodas per day and takes four different painpills, once to twice daily. She also never wakesup feeling refreshed and further questioningrevealed that she has no particular set bedtimeor wake time and frequently gives herself lessthan six hours a night of sleep. I told her to stopsmoking, stop caffeine, and stop all pain pills,go to bed at the same time every night, give herbody enough time to sleep and get up at thesame time every morning. She was not thrilled about this advice, andpointed out that if she carried out all of myinstructions, she would probably be non-functionalfor several weeks. What would happen to herbusiness? I told her that she probably is right, and that she has a difficult decision to make:deciding whether her business or her health ismore important. I hope she chooses her healthbecause without that, sooner or later, she won’tbe able to take care of her business.Remember, although migraine headaches arecommon for women, there are a variety of strate-gies available to effectively cope with them.SUCCESS STORIES“CoQ-10 gives me confidence that I amhelping protect my overall heart health.”“I lost my father and five brothersto heart disease so I have alwaysbeen aware of my high risk factor.I have been diligent about visiting mycardiologist yearly and it was duringone of these routine exams that he recommendedcoronary triple bypass surgery.
