Recently, however, I did somethingthat shocked my family and friends – tandemparagliding! If you’re unfamiliar with that, it’sbasically two people (you and a pilot) harnessedtogether, jumping off a cliff with a large wingholding you up.Needless to say, this isn’t something that I hadon my “bucket list.” This took place a few monthsago when Jon, a close friend, asked me to goparagliding with him in La Jolla, California.He has been flying since the ‘70s and assured mehe wouldn’t put me in danger. Keep in mind thatthe gliderport area where you take off from issome 800 feet above sea level. Wanting to bethe daring person I’m really not, I hesitantlyagreed to go.As we drove up to the gliderport I saw the skiesfull of paragliders so I knew the winds were goodand this was actually going to happen. I watchedas other amateurs took to the skies with theirtandem pilots, and each came back raving abouttheir experience and how amazing it was. I beganto feel very confident.Well that confidence was short-lived after I wasloaded down with a heavy pack and Jon told meto run toward the edge of the cliff. I thought mypart would be a piece of cake, since he held the
  4. 4. 4  l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.comWe often hear you talk about “Optimal Wellness” –what does this mean to you?Optimal Wellness is a state of being. When someone asks “How are you?”we might reply “I feel good” – we look at wellness as the way we feel, but itisn’t about feeling: it’s about being. You can have the physical capacity to dosomething without feeling the energy to do it. For example, this morning Ididn’t feel like working out at 6:30, but 10 minutes into it I felt great. OptimalWellness isn’t an arrival, or a destination point. I would define OptimalWellness like this:Physically, it is having the vitality and energy to do the things you needand love to do.Emotionally, it is when our lives are filled with positive emotions – love,gratitude, forgiveness, acceptance. It’s really an Optimal Wellness response youare having to both external and internal conditions.Spiritually, it is being connected to God and His purposes for your life.Optimal Wellness in my opinion is the highest quality of life a person can liveas it does not depend on external conditions or feelings in the way you liveyour life. It is internally driven.As our TriVita community knows, we advocate practicing the 10 Essentialsdaily to help people live more joyful lives through better physical, emotionaland spiritual health (see page 2). This is the foundation we use to build OptimalWellness. Optimal Wellness means elevating the state you’re in. You mightthink of it as a variation on the Army slogan, “Be all you can be.” But myversion, my definition of Optimal Wellness, is “Being all you can be.”July marks TriVita’s 11th year of helping people on theirwellness journeys, and it’s a year sparked with tremendousexcitement.   5. 5. So does Optimal Wellness mean livingthe 10 Essentials?In pursuit of Optimal Wellness, there should be aplan… a plan for you to receive something we allneed every day. The 10 Essentials are a road mapto get you to Optimal Wellness. Perhaps this is ahuge concept for people to accept but they arethe essentials to wellness. Do you realize thatnine of the 10 Essentials are about nurturing? Ofcourse, it’s vital for us to receive all the nutrientsour physical bodies need; most people do not getthem from food, so that is why we offer targetednutrition through our nutritional products. Butthe larger question is, “How do I nurture myselfevery day so I have the health and wellness tofulfill my life purposes?” The 10 Essentials arethere to guide you.Has your idea of wellness changedover the years?Absolutely. My views are much more focused onthe nurturing, emotional side of wellness now. I’vecome to understand the significant role thatpositive emotion plays in our wellness, includingour physical wellness. For example, if your life isfilled with anger or hostility, this creates achemical imbalance in the body. It weakens thecells, and sets us up for illness. Or look at theimpact of stress. Stress can lead to overeating,which leads to obesity, which we know contrib-utes to so many health problems.Remember, we’re not human doings, but humanbeings. Optimal Wellness is about findingand living in that state of being where younurture yourself.How has your experience leading TriVitaaffected your view of wellness?I recognize how challenging it is to lead peoplein changing their attitudes and behaviors.We in North America have been influencedsignificantly by a “treatment mentality”: If youhave a health problem, you go to a doctor andtake a pill. Please understand: I think healthcareprofessionals are important, and provide vitalservices for us all. But ask almost anyone in themedical community what the solution is to ourcurrent health crisis, and they’ll tell you that theanswer is living healthier: getting the nutrientsand nurturing that we need physically, emotion-ally and spiritually.When we live the 10 Essentials, we can beinternally-driven to make the best choices forourselves. Without the self-nurturing from the10 Essentials, we remain externally-driven, andsubject to outside influences. Food marketers, forexample, are brilliant at using our appetites forsugar, salt and fat. But these things in excess donot promote Optimal Wellness. So, we have toidentify something that’s bigger than thoseappetites, something that will motivate people tochange their attitude and behaviors towardswellness and give themselves a higher quality oflife. Maybe that “something” is your children orgrandchildren, for example. They’re important toyou, so you’ll do the things that give you OptimalWellness so you can be with them, doing thethings they love to do while being an example fortheir quality of life.TriVita has been on the forefront of healthyliving for years. Does that bring yousatisfaction?Yes, but my greatest satisfaction is all the phonecalls, emails and letters I receive from people whohave their “Aha!” moment. That’s when theyrealize that the 10 Essentials are so simple yet sopowerful. They begin to embrace them, bystarting with a product like Nopalea™, forexample. But today, helping people have qualitynutraceutical products and the informationto inspire and support their practice of the10 Essentials for Optimal Wellness living isthe expression of my life purpose.We’ve heard you use the phrase “wealth andwellness.” How do they connect?When I use the phrase “wealth and wellness,” I’mnot talking about wealth for opulent living. I’mtalking about wealth as having the resourcesnecessary to fulfill your life purpose. I believe lifepurpose wealth, which includes relationships andmoney, is available to every person, at any age. Ifyou don’t have purpose, you really don’t needwealth or wellness.What can we do every day to help enjoyOptimal Wellness?Practice the 10 Essentials. Remember, this doesn’tmean you won’t have a setback from time to time,and it isn’t about arriving at an “ultimate” place.It means you’re giving yourself the vitality andenergy needed to fulfill your life purpose, tooptimize your internally-driven life.What obstacles to Optimal Wellness shouldwe be aware of?Everything centers around attitudes and behav-iors, and how we respond to external influences.The key is awareness: if we’re aware of theseinfluences, then we can be internally driven byour values and our purpose. The greatest insightyou can have about yourself is to see the differ-ence between external and internal influences.What final thoughts would you like to shareabout Optimal Wellness?It’s not a destination – it’s a journey. It’s not aboutfeeling – it’s about being.It’s about being connected to those things thatare important in helping you fulfill your lifepurpose. It’s about filling your life each day withvitality and energy from proper nutrients andnurturing, and feeling connected to God for Hispurpose for your life. An undiagnosed deficiency could be graveLet me be clear about just what the issueis: when surgery involves the use of nitrousoxide, or “laughing gas,” if a doctor or dentistis unaware that the patient has a B-12 defi-ciency, the results could be disastrous. Nitrousoxide (chemically, N2O) is often used to reducepain and serve as an anesthetic during surgi-cal and dental procedures. Its ability to makepeople feel euphoric and “giggly” also makes ita popular substance for abuse. In either case,an unusual side effect of nitrous oxide is that itactually inactivates B-12 in the body.That’s right: laughing gas can actually strip yourmind and body of the benefits of B-12. In somecases, this can lead to nerve and brain damage,mental confusion and even trouble performingsuch simple physical acts as walking. So, if yourB-12 levels are too low, or you have troubleabsorbing B-12 and aren’t aware of it, no matterhow healthy you are otherwise, surgery couldhave serious and unintended results.This isn’t a new finding. As documented in thebook Could It Be B-12? by Sally Pacholok, R.N.and Jeffrey Stuart, D.O., the connection withnitrous oxide was known decades ago.The authors quote noted neurosurgeonsas saying, “N2O is very dangerous in theB-12-deficient patient. Because B-12 deficiencyis not uncommon and N2O use is widespread,the potential exists in every (surgical) practicefor this complication to occur.”A pre-surgery “shot” is no solutionEven when surgeons or dentists are alert tothe potential problem of nitrous oxide andB-12 deficiency, the preventive step they mighttake might be ineffective. Some medicalprofessionals, trying to avoid possible damagefrom nitrous oxide to a B-12-deficient patient,give a B-12 injection before a procedure.However, this won’t be of much help to some-one with a severe deficiency who is exposed tonitrous for an extended time, or to someonewhose low level of B-12 may have contributedto their need for a procedure in the first place.Unfortunately, screening for B-12 deficienciesbefore procedures isn’t common. Even moreunfortunately, the medical literature containsmany cases of B-12-deficient patients whowere given nitrous oxide, and after theirprocedures suffered mental impairment,paralysis, numbness or memory problems.What might be the answer? Certainly, if youor a loved one is facing a procedure and youknow or suspect a B-12 deficiency, insist onan anesthetic other than nitrous oxide; thereare several alternatives available. But why nottake care of the deficiency beforehand, and giveyourself all the benefits of B-12?If you or a loved one may not get all the B-12needed from food, I encourage you to look intoB-12 supplementation with TriVita’s qualityproducts. From 1979-2003, exces-sive heat exposure led to 8,015 deaths in theUnited States. That’s more deaths from heatexposure than from hurricanes, lightning,tornadoes, floods and earthquakes combined.Take precautionsWhen extreme heat hits, protect yourself andloved ones against heat-related illnesses byapplying these tips from the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention (CDC):• Drink plenty of fluids – During hot weather,increase your fluid intake and don’t wait todrink until you’re thirsty. If exercising,drink even more.• Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen –Choose lightweight, light-colored, looseclothing. If you must go outdoors, wear awide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and applysunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.• Schedule outdoor activities carefully – If youmust be outdoors, try to limit your activityto morning and evening hours. Rest oftenin shady areas.• Stay cool indoors – Stay indoors and ifpossible, in an air-conditioned room. If yourhome doesn’t have air conditioning, go to themall or public library. But if heat increases tosuch a level that your body can’t handle it,or it can’t compensate for fluids and salt lostthrough perspiration, the temperature ofyour body’s inner core rises, which can leadto heat-related illnesses.Recognize the symptoms and learn thefirst aid treatment for these commonheat-related illnesses:Too hotto handleAvoiding heat-related illnessHeat Disorder Symptoms First AidHeat cramps Painful spasms usually in muscles of legs andabdomen. Move the victim to a cooler environment. Reducebody temperature with cold bath or sponging. Use extreme caution.Remove clothing, use fans and air conditioners. If temperature risesagain, repeat process. Do not give fluids.Food and heat: a dangerous comboSummer heat can harm you in yet another way: through spoiled food.Food-borne bacteria thrive in heat and quickly multiply on food, increasingyour chances of food poisoning. Help protect against food-borne illnesswhile outdoors this summer with these tips from the CDC:• Have disposable washcloths or moist towelettes available for washingyour hands and surfaces.• Keep raw meats and their juices away from other foods. Thoroughlywash anything that held or touched raw meat before using it forcooked food.• Cook meat and poultry completely at your picnic/outdoor site. Meatspartially cooked at home can encourage bacterial growth.• Replenish ice in your cooler as soon as it starts melting and keep coolersin the shadiest, coolest areas possible.By taking some simple and common-sense precautions, you can enjoya healthy, worry-free summer.

It’s happening moreand more, to the point where “video gameaddiction” is becoming a recognized mentaland behavioral disorder. In fact, the signs ofvideo game addiction are very much like the redflags for obsessive gambling.Of course, not everyone who plays videogames is addicted, and many youngsters (andadults) enjoy gaming because it lets them solveproblems, be creative, sharpen hand-eye coordi-nation and even improve language and mathskills. That may help explain why last year, over11 million people played the wildly popular“World of Warcraft,” an online, fee-basedmultiplayer game.Still, like any obsessive behavior, video gameaddiction can shut a child off to other healthyaspects of life.“Fun” that goes too far: warning signsOne study of young people’s gaming habitsshowed that almost one in 10 were displayingthe same types of behavior that characterizegambling addiction. This is called “pathological”gaming, and it’s a growing problem as videogames become more a part of everyday “virtual”life. The damage can affect family and socialrelationships, school performance and/or overallpsychological health.Compared to non-pathological gamers, thoseaddicted to gameplay tend to exhibit these signs:• Lying to family and friends about videogame usage• Using video games to escape from problemsor bad feelings• Becoming restless or irritable when trying tostop playing video games• Skipping homework to play video games• Doing poorly on a school assignment or testbecause of time spent playing video gamesThese video game “addicts” are reported tospend about 24 hours each week playinggames. In addition to the problems above,they also tend to have more physical healthproblems than those whose gaming activitiesare under control.What can be done?As players “win” at video games, they advanceto new levels, and this can make it difficult tostop playing. Experts urge parents to talk withtheir children about gaming, to set limits ongaming time, and to explain why limits area good idea.Unlike, say, a board game, video games can’t bestopped at any point without losing a player’sprogress. Gamers usually need to get to a pointwhere they can save their play, so it can beuseful for a parent to give a 15-minute warningbefore they want a child to stop. If a child claimshe can’t stop after 15 minutes, that’s a sign thatthe game needs to be turned off.Video game addiction is a serious issue, andshouldn’t be ignored as just a “stage.” In fact, it’sbecome such a major issue that the AmericanMedical Association has considered including itin its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of MentalDisorders. My goal of trying to look cool and experienced was shot downin front of witnesses – quite embarrassing, to say the least!When I finally got into the seat comfortably and we were airborne,I thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest. But thenI took a deep breath and viewed my surroundings. As I lookeddown at the magnificent ocean and the green hillsides, I wascompletely in awe. I suddenly felt very secure in the chair andbegan to take photos. Large birds were flying around us along witha handful of other paragliders. It was truly an experience I willnever forget. We flew for 45 minutes before we had to land on thebeach since the winds had died down too much to allow landingback at the gliderport.I can’t describe the way I felt when it was all said and done. Thewhole experience made me so pleased with myself that at thisstage of my life, I actually did something extremely daring anduncharacteristic. I now find myself wondering what else I cantake on! You see, staying in a comfort zone can create a rut. I reada quote recently by Lawrence J. They start crossing items offthe list as they go sky-diving together, get tattooson their hands, drive a Shelby Mustang, go on alion safari in Africa and ride motorcycles on theGreat Wall of China.After discussing the movie with my friends, Idecided to rent the movie and have a few goodlaughs again and find inspiration for my own list.I wanted to experience extraordinary adventurein my life. I wasn’t prepared for the message thatseemed to shout at me as I watched the movie forthe second time.I was stunned into silence as I viewed the sceneof Carter and Edward atop a tomb, viewing theEgyptian pyramids. They confide in each otherabout faith and family, revealing that Carter haslong been feeling less in love with his wife andthat Edward is deeply hurt by his estrangementwith his only daughter.Carter tells Edward that the ancient Egyptianshad a beautiful belief about death – when thesouls arrived at the entrance gate of heaventhey were asked two questions. Their answerswould determine whether they were admittedor not. The two questions asked were, “Haveyou found joy in your life?” and “Has your lifebrought joy to others?”I put the movie on pause as I reflected on thisscene. These two questions about giving andreceiving joy seemed to sum up for me themeaning of life and the two most importantthings to put on my “list” along with the otherextraordinary adventures already listed there.George Bernard Shaw said it so well in his poemThe True Joy of Life:“This is the true joy of life.The being used for a purposeRecognized by yourself as a mighty one.”In short, what is it that you are here to do? Whatpulls you out of bed in the morning and keepsyou awake at night with excitement and won’tlet you go? What tasks must you do to makeyour own music on this planet? Nothing long-term,mind you, just a week ortwo off in the summer to re-charge, spend timeadmiring His handiwork, and then get backto loving and providing for us. Of course it’sunthinkable… but that’s what many folks dowhen they “take a break” this time of yearfrom their spirituality. I’m not just talkingabout skipping church here, but skipping theopportunity to share what we have with others.With vacations and “summer hours” duringthis season, it’s easy to forget that the needsof those less fortunate are present year ‘round,and not just during the cold winter holidays.So I’m suggesting that we borrow a slogan fromthe stores and shopping malls, and revivethe real spirit of charity and love behind“Christmas in July.” Let’s let our giving spiritbe manifest this summer, and not take a vacationfrom generosity.Some misunderstand the nature of givingEven when we don’t stop to appreciate ourblessings, take part in a worship service or give tochurch and charity, God is always present, givingto us. Let’s look at this idea of giving in depth: Ithink some people misunderstand the nature ofgiving that God spells out in Scripture.So many times, we think that giving is a form ofsuffering. The idea seems to be that if it reallyhurts, it’s really spiritual, but I don’t think that’swhat God intends at all. Let’s say you have $20 inyour pocket ‘til next payday, you’re in church,and you feel the need to “dig deep” when theoffering plate comes around. If you throw that$20 in the plate, I think God’s reaction might be,“Whoa, what are you going to do for gas? Don’tput that $20 in there – I never said that!” Whatour Lord did say, in 2 Corinthians, is that Heloves a “cheerful giver.” Notice that He didn’t say“reckless giver” or “impulsive giver.” By “cheerful,”He means giving out of our blessings… planningto give… sharing with others as generously aspossible. Scripture tells us that we are blessed tobe a blessing in the lives of others. Certainly,there are times to give out of your need and todig deep for God.Remember, as we learn in 2 Corinthians 9:6,“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,and whoever sows generously will also reapgenerously.” If you donate to church or charityjust occasionally, and out of a feeling of obliga-tion, well, you’ll reap only occasional grace. Butif you give in the spirit of faith and love, sharingyour abundance as you’re able, you will begenerously blessed. Think of yourself in thatchurch pew with your last $20. You’re sittingthere with no plan for giving, you didn’t discussthe situation with God, and now you hearsomebody preach and you start feeling guilty.“Gosh,” you might think to yourself, “what willGod think of me if I don’t give this money?” Godhas told us to prepare in advance for our giving.After all, how can we be “cheerful givers” if ourgift means not feeding our family this week? Inthe Amplified Version, 2 Corinthians 9:10 goeson to say: “And (God) Who provides seed for thesower and bread for eating will also provide andmultiply your (resources for) sowing and increasethe fruits of your righteousness (which manifestsitself in active goodness, kindness, and charity).”So now, in July, the year 2010 is more than halfgone. Now is the time for Christmas in July, forremembering that giving is an all-year event.Now we should be praying about our plan forthe rest of the year, so that we can give out ofjoy. Will you help out at a soup kitchen oncea week? Give an extra $5 regularly to yourchurch’s building fund? They are feelingsthat arise from our current experi-ence, remembered experiences of thepast or anticipated experiences in thefuture. These emotions may even arisewhen we empathize with someone else,sharing their joy or sadness.Sadness may also come completely unbidden – weexperience nothing that would trigger sadness; wesimply feel sad. Often there is a biochemical basisfor this feeling. What might that be?Three types of sadnessWe all experience the healthy emotion of sadnessthat comes from loss. You see, we become soattached to people and things in our life that theloss of anything is really a loss of ourselves. Thelosses may be minor, provoking minor degrees ofsadness. Or, the loss may be catastrophic,provoking profound sadness that may spiraldownward into clinical depression.Sadness may also arise from conflicted thinking:wishing that events should unfold in a particularway. We invest our time, energies and anticipa-tion in a particular outcome. When life does notharmonize with our desires, we can become sad.If life consistently fails to meet our expectationswe become despondent. Helplessness andhopelessness over time are hallmarks ofclinical depression.Another kind of sadness completely divorcedfrom the experience of loss or conflicted thinkingis based in brain biochemistry. Many things cancreate this form of melancholy. For example, apoor diet or nutrient deficiencies can createchemical imbalances in the brain. Exposure tocertain toxic substances may alter brain chemistryand produce a gloom that does not lift until thetoxin is resolved.A common cause for SADAll imbalances in the brain or body are rooted infour causes: trauma or injury, toxins and poisons,deficiencies and emotional distress (stress). One ofthe most common deficiencies causing sadness is alack of sunlight. Since there is less sunlightduring the winter season, people suffering withthis deficiency are said to experience “SeasonalAffective Disorder (SAD).” (The word “affect”describes mood and emotions.) According tothe American Academy of Family Practice,up to 20% of the general population experiencessignificant melancholic mood changesduring winter.Let the sun shineSAD is caused by a lack of sunlight. Humans arediurnal (as opposed to nocturnal) animals: we areawake during the day and asleep at night. It isimportant to recognize this biological drive tounderstand SAD. When humans are deprived ofproper sunlight, our biological clock becomesdisrupted. This internal clock regulates our sleep/wake cycle and more. Our biological clock alsoregulates our adrenal gland function, our thyroidfunction and the major hormone-regulatingmechanisms in our brain. When these hormonesare disrupted because of a deficiency of light, ourbrain chemistry is disrupted and SAD may result.Fortunately, there is an easy remedy for sunlightdeficiency: sunlight! Twenty minutes of brightmorning sun as well as twenty minutes of eveningtwilight sun can fill this critical deficiency, resetour biological clock and balance hormones. Byexposing ourselves to sunlight now we alter ourbrain chemistry to become more sensitiveto future exposure. So we’ll need less exposurein the winter if we get adequate exposureduring the summer.Sunlight is a simple, natural, safe remedy forSAD.
