I just returned from Mexico where I exploredthe opportunity of expanding our harvest of the Nopal cactus for futureworldwide growth.   6. 6.   l  VITAJOURNAL trivita.comCould Vitamin B-12 ease that mysterious cough?Study shows relief when this deficiency is correctedby Dr. Scott ConardAs a doctor who followsresearch into Vitamin B-12closely, I’m frequently grati-fied by this growing body of clinicalwork: study after study points to B-12as a powerhouse vitamin, essential forhealth in so many areas.We know, of course, that B-12 deficiencies havebeen linked to a number of symptoms, includingmoodiness, low energy, mental confusion andother troubling conditions. Now, a new studysuggests that B-12 could also help the body dealwith unexplained coughing.We’re not talking about common coughingthat occurs with colds or other problems of thebreathing system. What was studied was chroniccoughing – constant or consistent coughing –that couldn’t be explained by other causes.These causes included reactions to medications,an over-active cough reflex, gastroesophagealreflux disease (heartburn) and allergies.The findings, presented at the World AllergyCongress at the end of 2009, were significant.It seems that a deficiency of Vitamin B-12 couldbe a factor in not just unexplained chroniccough, but also problems with the pharynx(the passage from the throat to the stomach andlungs) and larynx (the “voice box” that containsour vocal chords).B-12 helped easecoughing significantlyThe study looked at nerve damage in thoseareas that could be caused by a B-12 deficiency.Vitamin B-12 supplements were administered,and among patients with a chronic cough anda B-12 deficiency, the chronic coughing waseased significantly.This study, presented by a doctor of Allergy andClinical Immunology at the University of Turin,Italy, looked at 302 patients with a chronic cough;of these, 40 had chronic unexplained coughing.Giuseppe Guida, M.D., the study leader, said histeam wanted to zero in on nerve damage as acause for a simple reason: B-12 deficiency hadbeen previously found to be a factor in nervedamage among many older patients.After testing for B-12 deficiency, the patientswith a chronic unexplained cough were split intotwo groups: one with no deficiency (the controlgroup), and one that was lacking in B-12. Bothgroups were given B-12 supplementation. Therewas no change in coughing for the control group.However, in those who lacked B-12, there wassignificant improvement.Supplementation: an easy solutionThis is an exciting development in B-12research. Although more work needs to bedone before any strong claims can be made, thisstudy certainly suggests that B-12 could play arole in allergy-related issues. As Dr. Guida said,“Supplementation is certainly very easy toperform… so, theoretically, there is a good wayto treat (chronic unexplained coughing).”If more research confirms the link betweenchronic cough and B-12 deficiency, thensupplementation “could be a very easy way tohelp these people,” Dr. Guida noted, “especiallybecause they are older,” and B-12 is so easyto administer.As you may know, age is often a factor in nothaving enough B-12 for optimal function. All the nutrients are inthe yolk. The yolk also contains lecithin, a fatemulsifier, which means that it’s a myth thateggs raise your cholesterol because they containthe very nutrient needed to break down thecholesterol they deliver.➋ Fat is bad. We as a nation, and especiallywomen, are not eating enough healthy fat – thegood fats, which our brain prefers to use as fueland the ones that help us burn the bad fat. Weeat entirely too much sugar when we cut out thehealthy fats. The kinds of fats we should increasefor more energy, improved metabolism, improvedskin tone and better brain function are coconutoil, flaxseed oil and meal, avocados, nuts, seedsand cold water fish.➌ Soy is a health food. Often it is NOT!Unfermented soy is toxic but fermented soy isbeneficial. Almost all of the soy grown in theU.S. is genetically modified, which means it iscreated in a lab with the introduction of chemi-cals. Soybeans are processed with hexane, agasoline by-product. The only forms of soy thatare healthy are fermented, meaning miso (as inthe soup), tamari (wheat-free soy sauce) andtempeh, a healthy tofu alternative.Food labels: five “red flags”We are bombarded by advertisements andmarketing campaigns of food manufacturerstelling us what is healthy and what isn’t. When you see any of thesefive terms on the outside of a package, considerthem “red flags”: they mean you should lookcloser at the nutrition label.➊ Sugar-Free: Artificial sweeteners likeaspartame and saccharin are now proven tocause an increase in appetite and sweet cravingsas well as cause headaches (neurotoxicity), andthyroid problems. If you’re going sugar-free, lookfor things sweetened with natural sweetenerslike raw honey, stevia, agave nectar, xylitol,erythritol and brown rice syrup.➋ Naturally sweetened: Beware of productslabeled “naturally sweetened.” Many of themcontain Splenda. There is nothing natural aboutSplenda. It is a sugar molecule that has beentreated with chlorine so that your body doesn’tabsorb the majority of sucralose or sugar (onlyabout 15%). You wouldn’t sprinkle chlorine onyour food so why would you eat it?➌ All Natural: Make sure to look at the labelon products claiming to be “all natural.” Moreoften than not, if the main ingredient fits intothe mainstream view of “healthy,” the productcan be listed as “all natural” without taking intoconsideration the laundry list of additives thatfollows the main ingredient. If a product hasMSG, trans fats, fractionated oils, nitrites, dyesand food coloring, it is not natural!➍ Low Fat: Our natural state is balance andwhen we eat foods that are as nature intended,we can maintain that balance. Nine times out of10 when food manufacturers take the fat out ofsomething, they replace it with sugar (as well assalt and preservatives) – which is the leadingcause of diabetes and obesity in this country. Fatis not the enemy, sugar is.➎ Whole Grain: Many products described as“whole grain” are made with processed wheatand corn, which are two of the five mostcommon food allergens, as well as two foods thatare well known for being genetically modified.Brown rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat and spelt,among other grains, are better ones to look for.You will see many of the mainstream foodmanufacturers using mostly corn and wheat withcopious amounts of sugar or high fructose cornsyrup snuck in.Behind food mythsand label tricksChrista OrecchioDon’tbeduped!

Andhow can you get back on track?Problem: Unrealistic expectations. A true killerof resolutions, unrealistic expectations candefeat you before you begin. There’s nothingwrong with dreaming big, but if it’s somethingthat is highly unlikely to occur – say, losing 30pounds in a month – chances are slim that you’llreach your goal.Solution: Managing expectations. Evaluate yourgoals and determine if they are realistic or not.Perhaps you’re even being unrealistic in thenumber of things you think you can accomplishin one year. Trim down your list and concen-trate on just a few items.Problem: Broad, vague goals. It’s all well andgood to decide that you will save more moneythis year or get a better job. But how will youdo it?Solution: Make a specific plan of action. Breakdown resolutions into their smallest parts: youwill go to the coffee shop only once a week, youwill check out DVDs from the library instead ofrenting them, you will eat out only once a week,etc. Also, set timelines. Review your budget anddetermine how much you can save each week soyou can confidently (and realistically) state howmuch you will save over the course of the year.How are you going to find a better job? Set adate for completing your resume and determinehow long you will spend job-hunting each dayor week.Problem: Letting roadblocks discourage you. Let’sface it: life gets in the way of our plans. Theweekday rituals of work, parenting, etc., canreally throw a wrench in things and quicklyderail our goals.Solution: Be flexible. Recognize that lifehappens. Sometimes, kids’ extracurricularactivities or extra projects at work mean lesstime for pursuing goals. Don’t give up; modifyand move on.Problem: Feeling alone and unsupported. Yourfriend calls and invites you out to eat, notknowing that you’re watching your budget andyour waistline.Solution: Tell others your plan and enlist help.Asking for help is not a bad thing. The moresupport you have and the more accountable youmake yourself, the more likely you are to reachyour goals. You can even find a buddy whoshares a similar goal and work toward it together.Above all, don’t beat yourself up if you’ve fallenoff the resolution wagon. Get up, dust yourselfoff and hop back on. Remember, each day is the“first day of the rest of your life!”

If you’re munching potato chipswhile telling a child to eat her broccoli, nolearning will occur. Teach by example, andenjoy fruits, vegetables and lean meats yourself,while helping a child grow strong and energetic.Play. “Exercise” and “activity” are grown-uplabels for the running and playing that kidsnaturally enjoy. So play along – ride bikes, takewalks, swim or take part in any other activitythat gets you both moving. Since kids oftenwant to do what adults do, show them what anactive adult does.Stay in balance. You know that good healthdepends on a balance between food consumed,and energy expended. So show the children inyour life how to live that balance between whatthey eat and how much they move.Eating tips to chew onTry these specific tips for helping children eatthe foods that support health and well-being:• Encourage the whole family to eat at leastfive servings of fruits and vegetables eachday. And unlikeolder people, young ones need at least 60minutes of exercise daily. These hints can helpboth young and old enjoy activity together:• Since adults need at least 30 minutes of dailyphysical activity, combine yours with yourkids and have fun together: play hopscotch,toss a ball around, dance… what would youboth like to do?• Walk with children everywhere possible. Afterdinner, instead of heading for the TV orcomputer, take a walk together. And don’tforget to bring the dog.• Include youngsters in active chores such ashouse cleaning, yard work and car washing.• Limit sedentary activities such as watching TVand playing on computers or video devices.• When you do watch TV, use commercial timeto march in place or stretch.• Avoid using TV as a babysitter. Children liketo be involved in what adults are doing, sowhy not do something with them? Playinghide-and-seek, running an errand or doingsome light gardening are all healthy,positive alternatives.• Keep TVs out of children’s rooms.• Give gifts that encourage physical activity:outdoor or indoor games, sporting equipment,bicycles, anything that promotes movement.Sports are great outlets for energy, but not allchildren are good athletes. Many doctors treat prob-lems with the large intestine simply by recommending morewater intake and a simpler diet.Once the large intestine has removed water from undigestedmatter, it forms solid waste for excretion. If a poor diet anddehydration cause you to have toxicity in your large intestine,this poison can back up into the kidneys, lungs, sinuses and eveninto the skin.Skin: helping remove the overloadIf your body is overloaded with toxins, poisons or even infection, itwill try to compensate by pushing some of this waste out throughthe largest organ of the body: skin. Some symptoms of this arefoul-smelling breath and perspiration.Supple, healthy skin is much more than a cosmetic, or appear-ance issue. When skin problems arise, it can be a sign of toxicoverload. For example, people with diabetes often developcracks in the skin of their feet. This is due to their toxic levelsof blood sugar, which the skin can’t handle.For healthy skin, do deep breathing every day, maintain a healthydiet, and drink lots of water.Liver: the toxin neutralizerConsider the chemicals in our food: colorings, sweeteners,preservatives, even residual pesticides and fertilizers. Now add inpollutants from water, personal and household products andour daily environment, and you can understand what a bigload the liver carries. The main function of the liver is toneutralize all these toxins.Using a special enzyme, the liver attaches toxins to fiber, andthen pushes the fiber and the toxin out through the colon. Green tea might helpSendai, JapanGreen tea may be linked with reduced symptoms of depression, according to a recent study in The AmericanJournal of Clinical Nutrition.Researchers from the Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering in Sendai, Japan, discoveredthat the more green tea elderly people drank, the fewer depressive symptoms they exhibited.A group of 1,058 community-dwelling elderly people 70 and over were given questionnaires to fill out and wereevaluated for depression with the 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Researchers found that those who drankfour or more cups of green tea per day were 44% less likely to have depressive symptoms, versus those who drankone or fewer cups.Although the study authors concluded that “a more frequent consumption of green tea was associated with a lowerprevalence of depressive symptoms in the community-dwelling older population,” they suggest that more researchis necessary to determine if tea is an antidepressant.Omega-3 in combination with glucosamine better at reducing joint painthan glucosamine aloneBerlin, GermanyOsteoarthritis patients who took omega-3 fatty acids in combination with glucosamine experienced more painrelief than those who took glucosamine alone, researchers in Germany recently discovered.The study, which appeared in Advances in Therapy, tested 177 patients with moderate-to-severe knee or hiposteoarthritis. They were split into two groups: the first group took the omega-3 acids EPA and DHA (200milligrams) and glucosamine sulfate (1500 milligrams), and the second group took glucosamine sulfate (1500milligrams) alone.After 26 weeks, those in the omega-3/glucosamine group had a 48.5%–55.6% reduction in morning stiffnessand pain versus a reduction of 41.7%–55.3% in the glucosamine group.Researchers believe this is the first clinical trial to test the glucosamine/omega-3 combination inosteoarthritis patients.Can multi-vitamins slow aging?Research Triangle Park, North CarolinaMulti-vitamin use may be linked to younger biological age, according to researchers from the National Institutesof Health. A study reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that women who take multi-vitamins regularly have longer telomeres (believed to be markers of biological aging) than women who don’t.Telomeres are DNA pieces located on the tips of cells’ chromosomes, which shorten each time the cell divides.The length of the DNA piece is believed to be a basic measure of a cell’s age. Thus, the longer the telomere,the younger the cell is presumed to be. After the telomere shortens to a certain length, it signals the cell to stopdividing, which means eventual death for the cell.Researchers used data from 586 early participants in the Sister Study (a long-term breast cancer study) todetermine telomere length. They also used information from a 146-item food questionnaire to determine multi-vitamin use and nutrient intake.Women who used multi-vitamins daily had 5.1% longer telomeres than women who did not use multi-vitamins.Higher dietary intake of Vitamins C and E was also associated with longer telomeres, even among women who didnot take multi-vitamins.

Not only will you avoidexposing yourself and your loved ones to causticand potentially harmful chemicals, but you canhelp the environment and save money at thesame time.The ingredients for cleaning successYou may already have the ingredients you needto make your own household cleaners. Try usingthese common household items as part of a newspring cleaning ritual:Baking soda. Or maybe you decided to getorganized, spend more time with family or takeup a new hobby. Most importantly, did youresolve to give yourself the gift that surpasses all,and renew your faith in the Creator’s infinitegrace? That’s one resolution that needn’t slipaway – in fact, His grace is a gift we can receiveall the time, anytime, no matter what thecalendar says.In the Scripture from Corinthians, God isreminding the apostle Paul that even duringtroubled times, His love is sufficient for all needs.It’s when we think we have “failed” that God’sloving power reassures us: We don’t think wecan meet the challenge, but we can, becauseHe can.Second chances, time and againAt this point in our new year, do you feel asthough you’ve failed at whatever goal you mighthave set? If youmissed the mark, ask yourself: “Did I really applymyself?” Then ask God, “Can I have a secondchance? Give me the strength and wisdom; showme what to do differently.”Many of us (myself included) wouldn’t still bearound if God didn’t give us a second and thirdor even a 17th chance. This is absolutely not areason to just skate through life, and use God asan excuse for lack of effort. There are conse-quences to our actions. Grace and mercy don’talways apply. Sometimes, when I talk withpeople who don’t study the Word of God, I hearexcuses like, “Well, I prayed about it and Godtold me to walk away.” Imagine saying that in acourt of law, or at a bankruptcy procedure: “Hey,I’m not responsible, God told me to forget it.” Itdoesn’t work that way.We are responsible for our own choices, everyone of us. At the other extreme, some of us taketoo much responsibility for our choices, ours andother people’s. We’ve all heard this theme. Aparent might lament, “My children got ondrugs… what did I do wrong?” Or one half of acouple might feel to blame when the other halfis unfaithful: “Obviously, I’m not meeting his (orher) needs.” Why take responsibility for someoneelse’s choice, when it can only belong to them?Did you do your best?I’ll admit that I used to beat myself up when Ilooked back at some missed goal or opportunity.But now, I realize that the wise thing to do isask, “Did I do the very best I could given theresources and information I had at that time?” Ifthe answer is yes, then I can move on.I know it can be discouraging, when life seemstoo full of missed goals and elusive dreams.Right here at TriVita, there have been timeswhen some of us may have questioned whetherwe were supposed to be here or not.
