There is growingevidence of a connection betweenthe two conditions – and mountingexcitement over the possibility ofeasing both.For several years, medical science has turnedits eye toward inflammation as the main issuebehind a number of health problems, fromjoint pain to allergies, high blood pressure toulcers, and even cancer and heart attacks. Asearly as 2004, TIME magazine called chronicinflammation “The Secret Killer.” Continuingresearch suggests that obesity might be addedto the list of conditions caused, at least in part,by inflammation.the brain, inflammationand excess weightResearchers recently found that weightcould be lowered or managed by reducinginflammation in a certain part of the brain.Just over a year ago, a study published in thejournal Cell indicated that inflammationcould be a key factor in obesity.Obesity is known to increase inflammationthroughout the body. But could the inflamma-tion be a cause, not an effect, of the obesity?A study based at the University of Wisconsin,Madison and the University of California,San Diego zeroed in on two areas:1. The hypothalamus, a brain region thatregulates the body’s energy balance.2. A “master switch” of inflammationthat’s usually turned off.In lab tests on mice, that “master switch” ofinflammation turned on in the brains of miceon a high-fat diet. With thatmaster switch turned on, themice gained weight.Next, the scientists used genetic engi-neering to flip that master switch off in thehypothalamus of other mice. They found that those who worked part-time or at temp jobs after retirement wereless likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, lung disease, heart disease, stroke, psychiatricproblems and arthritis.Retirees who worked at least part-time were also less likely to show a decline in their ability to perform daily livingtasks. I am leavingthe city of Scottsdalewhere I have livedfor the past 28 yearsand the house I havelived in for 14 of those years. It’shard for me to leave the familiar andgo to the unknown: A new city anda new house void of the memoriesthat makes a house a home. Allthree of my children lived in thishouse and left the safety of the nestto go out on their own. They did it!Why am I clinging?I was sharing with a friend about how hardit is for me to move and let go of the memo-ries that had taken place in this house. (Notthat they were all good; I have had myregrets.) He said, “Judy, life is like a muralthat we keep adding to with every changethat takes place. You don’t lose the memo-ries, you just add to them. We know thatwriting things down helps make them “real”for us, so take a note card or piece of paperand write it down: what is it that God haspromised you would do in your lifetime?Once you’ve written down your purpose, whataction steps can you take to achieve it? Maybeyour life purpose is to help others less fortunate.That’s pretty general, but the specific steps mightlook like this:1. Donate time to the local soup kitchenonce a week.2. Take clothes and household itemsto the homeless shelter.3. Be a volunteer at a hospital or hospice.My own “Faith Challenge” is with me all thetime. My wife and I feel that our purpose is toestablish a retreat center for weary pastors to berenewed, restored and recharged. Every day, anindex card on my mirror reminds me of thispurpose, and it adds two important words: “Beaware.” You might ask, “Be aware of what?” andthat’s the issue. What does God have going onaround you to be aware of?A plan fell through, yet I was thrilledA few years ago a close friend came to mewith news of a retreat center in Arizona thatwas available. It had changed hands, and thenew owners wanted to sell. But the price wastoo high and the deal didn’t happen. I wasn’tdisappointed; I got very excited, because Ihad been aware, the opportunity waspresented and I was ready to move forward.Each year, I renew my faith that establishingthat retreat is one of my God callings. Whenshe spoke at TriVita’s 2009 Galaxyof Stars event, many attendeeswere moved to tears by Kimberly’sinspirational saga of survival.This Mesa, Arizona resident was diagnosed withbone cancer in 1996. Unfortunately, the cancerwas very advanced and doctors gave her littlehope. “The doctor told me I had one monthto live at the most,” Kimberly remembers. “Headded that I should probably start planningmy own funeral.” This was devastating news –because Kimberly was planning to get marriedin one month.
