The world is what it is and all of the could of, should of and might of will not change it nor help your current needs. In fact, it is up to you to go the extra mile, make the extra effort and to then work harder than the person who doesn’t have barriers. It is very easy to give up, to blame society and use the difficulty of the situation as your excuse for doing nothing…”No one will hire me!” “No one will hire me!” is a very easy way to shut down any conversation with case managers, friends or family because they will be hard pressed to call you on this. It becomes a very seductive way to avoid painful conversations that focus on what you believe is your failure(s). It becomes so seductive that you start to believe it too. The problem is that once you start to buy in on the concept, it becomes truth but, is it reality? The answer is to you, for friends, family and support team it becomes a false reality. The question to ask is complicated because you must be truthful with yourself about how much of this is true and how much of this was your fabrication to protect your feeling and/or to get people off your back. The real answer is that it is not. The real answer lies in the fact that you let your past experience(s) or one or two recent experience(s) prevent you from moving on with your job search and thus your life.

They never really interviewed me, but instead I just took a sorting test on a computer and did a mouth swab drug test for fifteen minutes.

Interview Question – Can you handle a fast paced environment? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warehouse Associate - Interviewed at Amazon.com Interview Details – Hiring is through a temporary employment agency. Periodic "conversions" offer employment to those who are considered solid workers. The company seems to not enjoy as good a reputation as they might like. It seems many aspirants to employment decide to move on rather than deal with the issues/problems inherent with Amazon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lead Fulfillment Associate - I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at Amazon.com in July 2014. Interview Details – Completed online application. I was contacted the next day for a phone interview. The phone interview was a bit awkward. There was a delay in the line so my interviewer and I interrupted each other a few times. The questions weren't too difficult, mostly about safety, and times when you've had to address an unethical situation with an employee. The interviewer definitely was reading from a script, and records all your answers. They let you know right away at the end of the interview if you will be invited for an in person interview or not. Luckily, I was. You schedule you in person interview online, I scheduled mine for about two weeks after the phone interview. You must bring Proof of Education to your interview, and note that even though it says a copy of your high school diploma is fine, you must have the original. I made this mistake and had to drive the 45 minutes back to my house to get the original. Another girl was sent back to her house to retrieve her original as well, and actually missed being interviewed that day because she lived too far away to be back in time. After having your POE and ID checked, your group(in my case it was only myself and one other person) are led into another room where you're given a short worksheet that has a role play exercise and a second problem to evaluate your basic math and problem solving skills. You're given 15 minutes to complete both, and then you're taken into a room where you're split up and interviewed individually.
  • 11. At first, the two I was interviewing with seemed a bit stiff, they seemed like they were having a long day but I kept making little jokes and smiling and they lightened up quickly. You do the role play with one of the interviewers as a problem employee, and I will warn you, they do NOT make this easy. I've had plenty of experience in acting and improv but the interviewer playing the difficult employee was shutting me down at every angle. Just try your best, and do what you feel would work if you were in that employees shoes. After the role play, we went over the math problem and they do ask that you try to give some "out of the box" answers. Then it follows with the usual interview questions: Tell me about a time when you... etc. When the interview is over, you don't receive any feedback. All I got was "It was great to meet you." and escorted to the door. I was sure I didn't get the position even though I felt the interview went so well. Two days later I received a call from Amazon HR telling me they'd like to offer me the position and set the date for my welcome event.

Interview Question – • The most difficult part was the role play exercise; they really don't give you anything to work with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fulfillment Associate - I applied through a staffing agency and the process took 2 days - interviewed at Amazon.com. Interview Details – process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. Tell me about yourself. Process was standard staffing agency interview. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warehouse Associate - Interviewed at Amazon.com Interview Details – I applied online through snagajob and got an email the next day to go to a hire event and pick the day I wanted to go so I went the following Monday, it was Wednesday and I could’ve picked as soon as Friday, and when I got to the event I had the job I just had to take a mouth swab drug test and take my
  • 13. proof of education. I applied for a seasonal part time position so I believe that is why it was so easy. Just waiting on my background to clear Interview Question – There was no question. I just had to complete a questionnaire when I applied which replaced a real interview. Either strongly agree or strongly disagree on questionnaire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Warehouse Associate - I applied online and the process took 2 months - interviewed at Amazon.com in June 2014. Interview Details – I applied online at Amazon.com. About two weeks later I got an email asking me if I wanted to set up an appointment online. It was a direct hire event for a new warehouse opening up in Moreno Valley. I set up an appointment that wasn't for another three weeks. I arrived at a hotel that had Amazon signs showing you where to go. When I went inside there was some Amazon employees sitting at a few tables, and there was a line of people waiting to speak with them. When I finally sat down to speak with them, I expecting an interview but instead the employee asked for my ID and my diploma and told me there was no interview and then she gave me a contingency letter offer of employment. I got the job as long as I passed the background check and oral drug test. The lady sent me to another room with about 20 other people who got the job to take our oral drug
  • 14. test and watch a video about Amazon and what they had to offer to their new employees! It was by far the easiest interview I had ever been to in my life. It wasn't really an interview because they didn't ask me a single question. Interview Question – No questions were asked. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fulfillment Associate - I applied online and the process took 5 months - interviewed at Amazon.com in June 2014. Interview Details – I filled out an online application, and took a test (also online). That was back in February of this year, I then received a few emails about an Amazon Fulfillment Center and what it is like to work there. Finally at the end of May I received an email to come to a tier 1 hiring event (which I had to pick one of there posted times listed in the email). I went to the event, where they had me bring my photo I.D. and proof of my education. After taking both and checking them over they gave me a temporary access card so that I could get into the area where the hiring event was being held. I was then handed a piece of paper with information on what my schedule would be, and what the next steps in the hiring process would be like, they called it a contingent hiring agreement. I was then sent to a room with about 15 to 20 other people and we were asked to take I.D photos for our access cards, then we were given a few speeches from some of the upper management and HR reps, and finally we were asked to take a drug test. We were told that as long as we passed both the drug and the background tests then our job offer would be considered valid, and we go on to the next part of the hiring process, the new hire orientation. It took about 6 days to get an email back after my drug and background test, the email stated that I had passed both, and that I should be on the lookout for my next email to schedule my new hire orientation. I am now just waiting for that email. I would like to mention that Amazon has awesome benefits and everyone at the group hiring event was really nice and friendly! Interview Question – There were no interview questions; they just offered us the job. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • 15. Picker Interview - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Amazon.com. Interview Details – Generally, when they are interested, usually around peak season which various from building to building, they will do two phone interviews. Peek for anything going out the building, which is labeled out bound is the usually holiday seasons. Anything coming into the building, which is labeled inbound, is usually as you can expect the months following the peak of outbound. After the two phone interviews they will ask you to come in for a brief interview. The biggest things to worry about are if you have a second job they will be concerned and probably not hire you and if you seem physically unable to walk miles a day. NOTE: THIS HAS CHANGED YEARLY FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS. SOME YEARS IT IS AS BELOW AND OTHER YEARS IT WAS THE POLAR OPPOSITE! IT COMES DOWN TO NUMBERS – THE NUMBER NEEDED VERSUS NUMBER APPLIED. If you are ready for the challenge and seem to be in okay condition you shall get hired because the turnover rate is exceptional high at Amazon. Following employment you will have to take a SWAB DRUG TEST. Nothing major, just make sure you wash and rinse beforehand. OH AND DON'T LIE ON THE BACKGROUND CHECK EVEN IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING. As long as you have a GED and not too major of a felony they should employee you.

The Associate Manager was the one that did the interviewing and she just asked the basic retail questions. The manager actually spent more time talking about the company than actually asking questions. She also liked the fact that I was in college since many of the employees there were attending a college or university. They also do an oral drug test with you right away in the office after the interview. I was contacted 2 weeks later for an interview. I arrived early, and had to wait. The interviewer finally came to interview me. Was immediately asked to see my identification and SS card. She copied it, and then proceeded to give me papers describing the duties of cashier and courtesy clerk. I was asked questions regarding education, past experience, scheduling availability, customer service, and why did I want to work for Kroger. She went over the pay scale, training, scheduling, dress code, lunch/breaks, and insurance. Afterwards, I was given an oral drug test and back ground check. Exactly one week later, I was contacted to come in and do paperwork. Training was then scheduled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Initially received a phone call to schedule an interview several days after my online application. I arrived a bit early so I had to wait for about ten minutes upstairs, I guess they weren't expecting me to be prompt. When my interviewer arrived, it was fairly

At that point, the conversation shifted to the job description, work environment, expectations of me, and the drug test I'd have to take. I then was given time to ask questions, and then taken to the HR person to take my drug test. I was called a few days later when the results were in to schedule training and orientation. Easy process and the front end manager were very nice throughout it all. Interview Question –There weren't really any difficult or unexpected questions. Wear something nice - Men: Collared button-down shirt (tucked in), slacks/khakis (no shorts) and belt (preferably one that matches shoe color), loafers or not-worn-out sneakers. No flip-flops or sandals. Women: Nice shirt with slacks or skirt. A dress is ok too, but make sure it is covered (if sleeveless) and an appropriate length (right above knee or longer). Shoes can be dress sandal to high heels. No flip-flops. THE MANAGER MADE IT A POINT TO TELL ME I LOOK POLISHED AND PRESENTABLE. HE HIRED ME AFTER A 5 MINUTE INTERVIEW. The employers, as we have said, most times…don’t care what you did but, they do care who you are now, how well your skills and abilities match up or exceed what they are looking for and (really) unless your crimes relate to the type of work they
  • 57. need you to do – then there is no connection and your mighty mountains of career ending felonies has been reduced to a speed bump along the road to getting hired. Remember, we tend to blame the biggest elephant in the room for all of the poop and we need to realize and understand that (sometimes) it is not the felonies that were the true barrier but, rather the side effects of the felonies: AKA…lack of a driver’s license, lack of a vehicle, destroyed credit, judgments, fines, restraining orders, drug issues, family problems or those outstanding warrants that you failed to mention. Once we understand that we are dealing with trying to rebuild and flip our lives (career) to attract a new buyer (employer) and we have many issues that will prevent us from getting top dollar; it is then, we realize how critical presentation, packaging, showcasing and marketing are to us getting a good offer. The solution may not always be easy but, it is workable and it can be done if you are willing to commit all your energy, talent and creativity to being a success or you can blow it off by saying “I’m a felon…Nobody will hire me!” It’s your call…it is your life, your future not mine. How much is that future REALLY worth to you? Then invest you time and energy according to how much it is worth you. WHERE HAVE I BEEN FOR THE PAST YEARS? - From Uncle Bob, Used Job Shack As a part of years of working with Veterans who were yet to be released and with a general population of returnees, we have developed inroads into how to deal with the issue of “where have I been for the past years?” We have developed a series of techniques as a means to not rationalize, defend or deny responsible for what has happened (in fact to embrace it) and to bump employers from their preconceive assumptions about you as a returnee (criminal) and to successfully move you (in their eyes) from the stereotype image to the human being that you are.

This is critical because once you are seen as a human being instead of a cartoon stereotype; it is easier for people to offer you help, support and forgiveness because: • It is commonly accepted that there has never been a perfect human being…we all know people who think that they are but… • If you agree with the above statement. Then you must accept that we all have make mistakes. • If you accept that we all have made mistakes, errors in judgment while doing things or say things that we regret but, know we cannot take back…Agree? Then is it a great leap of faith to say that everyone deserves second or even third chances and wouldn’t you want one too? Our working title for this technique is “THE HUMANIZATION OF MY CRIME.” It is a technique that makes a strong case for putting a human face on what happened to you and strongly makes the case that that was then and I am a very different person than I was then. It is a three step process that addresses the past, the present and the plan for the future. Here is an example of how this was created…

The concept builds off of the theory that there was a reason that you did what you did (not shifting the blame because that’s denial and then that is another issue for the employer to deal with) and the back story is very interesting and can turn around an employer’s perception(s) of you. We have had many successes with the integration of the human factor into cold, official statistics of what you did. By telling the story from the viewpoint of humanization, we have soften the hardest hearts NOT OUT OF PITY but, out of the understanding that we have all done things we wish we could take back and this creates a better understanding of who you are right now (remember an important employee concern). By creating a better understanding between the employer and you, there is a strong likelihood of their support of you getting hired. ============================================== CASE IN POINT In a clinical study, we had a young man came into the office that was very upset, mad and sad all at the same time. When asked what the problem was, he said that he has put in hundreds of applications and no one will give him a chance. When he was asked why and he said straight up that he had just recently got out of prison for murder and no one would give him a chance. Asked if he was really telling people in that manner, he said that he was upfront with them like he was with us. He was tired and thought that going back to prison was a more agreeable thing because he understood the yard and could navigate through that better than he could in this world with its entire mean people who will never let him get back to the life he once had.

He was dead serious about this and he was only days away from whooping that old woman over the head at Circle K and he had it so planned out that he would make it back to the yard in time for dinner. As we started talking about his charges, it turns out that the full story (that he had edited out of his current employment presentation) was that several years ago, someone broke into his home. He thought that he was defending his family and a jury disagreed with him. The immediate solution centers on “why don’t we start the conversation with this instead of I just got out of jail for murder...” Think about it. He was coming in and telling employers that he was a just released murderer and he was probably scaring the employers and that would be good reason as to why none of them would have anything to do with him. Now, say we chance his presentation with a story about (several years ago) someone broke into his home and he I thought that he was defending his family…wouldn’t you be thinking if you would have done otherwise? Importantly, by changing the way he told the story (NOT THE FACTS) would bump even a cold-hearted person into looking at him as a human being who made a terrible, regrettable mistake. Start to see the difference?

It's the perfect way to kick off your week… =============================================== OPTIONAL STEP TWO We live in a vindictive society that believes in punishment without end and sometimes, I believe that if could figure out a way to punish people after their death we would and keeping with that, we added to the conversation a summary of what he has lost. This young man had lost everything. He lost his career, his home, his family, friends…anything that he treasured and love is gone. He was left alone, penniless but, the greatest lost was that people would see him coming and cross the street to avoid him because he was a self- confessed murderer. Putting this all together into a list was depressing for him but, it became a powerful tool in dealing with the issue of punishment and once you see the real human factor in these abstract arguments on punishment, one quickly sours for the need to extract your own third- party punishment. This leads to an almost universal conclusion that he has suffered lost (greatly) and at this point, he may have been overly punished for a mistake that I made years ago. OPTIONAL STEP THREE To re-enforce the concept of “that was then and this is now” part of the equation, this is where we put forward a plan to going forward, bring into play what efforts have been made to learn and move on with his life.
  • 62. Here he explains that his goal going forward is to restore as much of his previous life that he can. He wants to have a career, get another home but, most importantly goal was to again have his family and friends to be proud of him, again. This is why he is here today, this is why he WANTS this job and he applied for this job because… {Insert talking points on skills and abilities}. This become a complete, powerful message and has been successfully mixed with positive employer trigger words like “WANT” instead of “Need” and “plan going forward” instead of “help.” Then throw in his talking points on his skills and abilities and he is bringing a lot to the table that he offers in being focused, dedicated and implies that he would be a productive, dependable and has the possibility to go places within the company. CONCLUSION: HIRED All this was wrapped together in a neat little script, practiced till it flows with the right delivery and then tested on a local employer who agreed and hired him. This same employer would not have crossed the road to help a murderer other than to the door makes it his personal mission to offer this young man a fresh start and the opportunity to rebuild his life. It is now up to the young man to restore his life or not but, now, he has the chance to try. I called the employer and asked him why he hired the young man. Did he know that he had been in prison for murder? The employer scolded and corrected me by retelling me the young man’s story and how it was an injustice that this young man would lose everything for trying to defend his family. THE “HUMANIZATION OF MY CRIME” WORKS WITH OTHER OFFENCES With a slight rewriting of the script to the particulars of what happened to the person.
  • 63. Another case study centered on a young lady who had 5-6 felonies that was having a hard time finding anyone to hire her. An employer would only hear 5-6 felonies and that would end the interview. Her story was that several years ago, she got mad at her bonehead, abusive husband and took a tire iron to the headlight of his truck and killed them headlight very good, thank you! Next thing she knows is that the police show up and everything went south…very quickly and she ended up with 5-6 charges (felony flight…endangerment, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer among them). She had a public defender who told her that her children would have grandchildren the next time she would be free but, she could do a deal. She pleaded guilty and served only a couple years. When we started the story with the below script, she got hired! “several years ago, I got mad at my abuse husband and I killed the headlights on his truck, the police showed up, I panicked and everything went terribly wrong afterwards but, now I am trying to build a new life for my children and that is why I am here and I am applying for this job because… {Insert talking points on skills and abilities}...” AND YET ANOTHER… Another young man was arrested for being involved in wholesale, curbside pharmaceutical sales and we developed a script for him that involved a very strong connection with “that was then and this is now.” “When I was much younger I got caught up in what I thought was a cool, fast and furious lifestyle of fast money, rock and roll. How I got so deeply involved in it…I am still trying to figure out but the bottom line is that I did do what I did and I stood tall and accepted my punishment. I have since grown up a lot and have discovered that what I really want is a normal life and a job that I can make into a career. This is why I appreciate this opportunity to talk with you and demonstrate why I would be a good candidate for this opening because… {Insert Talking Points]…” The possibilities are endless and employers are starting to respond by asking for not only what you did but for the story behind what you did and if you take responsibility for your actions, have grown from the experience and if you have an action plan going forward, you too can be yet another case study of success.
