WHY SHOULD I LOOK AT THIS BOOK? I AM NOT A CARE GIVER OR NURSE? THIS IS AN INDUSTRY THAT NEEDS KITCHEN STAFF, ADMIN TYPES AND EVEN GROUNDSKEEPERS...REALLY! Take A look!
"Choosing where to go to work and stay on board is a big decision, especially important in homecare with turnover rates over fifty-percent," says Brandi Kurtyka, CEO of Chicago-based myCNAjobs.
This is far from a complete guide (we may do a directory issue if there is an interest) but here are a few to get you going.

  • 1. 30 JANUARY 2014 WEDNESDAY NIGHT SPECIAL DO YOU HAVE ANY HEALTH CARE JOBS? YES WE DO! Although we are well into the hiring season for this year’s medical industry hiring, there is (still) a surplus of many openings throughout the valley. Many of the still available openings will remain open because (for that specific job) there is a serious shortage of applicants. Caregivers with transportation are so rare that many companies and registries are offering applicants a signing bonus of (up to) $150 USD just to register.
  • 2. While caregivers without transportation are a dime-a-dozen and the lines are long and the battle to get to the head of the line at valley institutions are better and many times becoming a contact sport at hiring events. The current status for care givers is: “Got a Car” and you are golden and many times based upon you actual skills, you can write your own ticket or “Without a Car” it is sorry Charlie! WHAT TO DO? SHOP AROUND… Phoenix given its yearly flocking of seniors retiring here in the Sunbelt, the medical care industry is one of Arizona’s continual growth industries. Given that there is no shortage of old, sick people, this has been a good industry to get into. In many ways, because it is a secure growth industry and a rich market from employers is the same reason it a poor and underpaid market for many of the market’s employees. This is because we have opened to many medical training facilities and have trained way too many new workers than the market could absorb. This is basic Supply and Demand 101. Too many workers and not enough jobs is the worker’s curse here in the medical industry’s promise land of milk and honey (MONEY). Many occupations no longer require just certification but, now require several years of experience to get an entry level (starter job). Dental techs have been hurt greatly by this. Ever Dentist requires that you have a minimum of 2 years’ experience with your recent certification(s). In fact, in the past year of tracking job openings for our clients, we have found only one or two Dentists that were not requiring experience and they were in Gila Bend and Casa Grande. Phlebotomists were once respected and well paid in the local medical field with senior or skilled “stickers” commanding $18-20/HR. (on pool) positions. These days, experience offers the medical professional little or no advantage in a field where the standard is “bring them in, chew them up and spit them out” and if your certifications are older than a year, then you will be hard pressed to find any job. This is because we have trained thousands of new “stickers.” The current market starts at barely above minimum wage ($10/HR.) and stagnates in the $12$14/HR. regardless of skills or experience. That being said, there is no shortage of low paying, difficult shift openings if you are willing to work for sharecropper wages. There is no shortage of care giving positions for those with the means to travel. RN can still write their own ticket depending upon their specialized experience or training. LPNs have a harder time because the industry sees no real usage for them. They will hire a RN and let them supervise more CNAs or just hire more CNAs or med techs. The one advice from people in the industry is…shop around and find the best deal for you. Well campers! Good hunting and here are some leads to help you.

Betcha if I hadn’t told you that they only go back 5 years, then, you would have walked away from this offer. HOW MANY OTHER JOBS ARE YOU WALKING AWAY FROM BECAUSE YOU ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT THE EMPLOYER MEANT TO SAY? Here you would have been wrong…! REMEMBER: “…reliable transportation to and from work…” remember that this does not mean you MUST have a car. If they did, the would say “Do you have a car?” This means can you get to work?…they don’t care if you can get home…that’s your problem for picking a job so far away from where you live….I mean, like, there was not any jobs closer? So DO NOT add to the employer’s question, DO NOT complicate it…KEEP IT SIMPLE! If you can get there the correct answer is “YES!” REMEMBER: Do not assume you know what the employer wants or needs…You could be wrong? What does “PASS” mean? When I was in school, I could “PASS” with 69% - I didn’t need 100%. If you do your job here correctly (getting the employer to want to hire you by front loading the conversation with the skills, abilities that they need before you drop the “F” Word on them…), you might find them closer to 69% rather than 100%...betcha!

RULE NUMBER 4 ALERT! ========================================================== BEST HOMECARE AGENCIES TO WORK FOR IN 2014 ANNOUNCED, MYCNAJOBS CAREGIVER CHOICE AWARDS Unlike most workplace-related awards, which require companies to self nominate, the Caregiver Choice Awards rely solely on the input of caregivers across the nation who anonymously provide feedback through a survey. The survey is distributed to thousands of professional caregivers working in homecare via myCNAjobs own caregiver marketplace. "Choosing where to go to work and stay on board is a big decision, especially important in homecare with turnover rates over fifty-percent," says Brandi Kurtyka, CEO of Chicago-based myCNAjobs. "Homecare agencies are struggling to retain their workers so we wanted to get under the hood to better understand where they want to work and why."
  • 46. In addition to the announcement of the winners of the Caregiver Choice Awards, myCNAjobs recently released the latest edition of the Caregiver Trend Report, focused on the important topic of caregiver retention. The report outlines key drivers in caregivers choosing an employer and the motivations for staying on board. THE TOP 5 BEST OF HOMECARE COMPANIES ARE: 1.Visiting Angels 2.Senior Helpers 3.HomeCare Assistance 4.Comfort Keepers 5.Home Instead The ranking of the top companies was determined by taking cumulative average ratings from 1,509 caregivers who responded to the survey between December 12, 2013 and December 13, 2013. "The Caregiver Choice Awards help give job seekers insight into the companies that invest in keeping their caregivers satisfied year round. "Finding a job you love is tough work but with feedback from thousands of caregivers on the inside, it can make the job search process a little easier," adds Kurtyka. =========================================================== http://www.visitingangels.com/ 3420 E Shea Blvd, #200, Phoenix, AZ (602) 953-5212 15030 N Hayden Rd, Phoenix, AZ (480) 315-0220 8502 E Princess Dr, #260, Scottsdale, AZ (480) 451-8800 701 W Southern Ave, Ste 103, Mesa, AZ (480) 833-8247 ================================================ http://www.seniorhelpers.com/eastvalleyaz When you become a Senior Helper, you will have access to the Senior Helpers University where you can take courses to learn how to be a better caregiver and potentially increase your salary based on your certification level. http://www.seniorhelpers.com/eastvalleyazCaregiverApplication
