  • 2. 10 MYTHS ABOUT JOB HUNTING DURING A RECESSION It’s easy to get yourself down and believe some of the myths swirling around about looking for a job during a recession. As gloomy as it feels, jobs do still exist. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths about recession job hunting.Myth 1: No one is hiring.Fact: While some industries are affected much more than othersduring a recession, many experience drastic growth and othersare much quicker to bounce back. Also, many companies lay offregular employees, but hire consultants and freelancers instead,to save money, providing even more opportunities if you’re willingto look outside of the full-time job box.Myth 2: You have to accept less money.Fact: Companies are still willing to pay for good employees, andthey understand that it is necessary to offer a competitive wage tohave the best on their team. In fact, asking for less than yourmarket value could be a turn-off. It’s OK to be flexible, but toomuch flexibility may make an employer feel you’ll be out the dooras soon as something better comes along.Myth 3: No one hires employees over 55.
  • 3. Fact: During a recession, companies are looking for ways tominimize costs—keep in mind that training a junior employee is ahuge cost. The difference between finding an experiencedcandidate who needs minimal training and has a significantlyshorter learning curve, and bringing on a junior employee withlower salary but a lack of experience and a large upfrontinvestment in training, could easily make up the salary difference.Myth 4: If you have an outstanding education and greatExperience, you’re guaranteed a job.Fact: Nothing guarantees a job these days. Your education isvaluable to some companies, but direct experience usually (notalways) trumps education. And don’t forget that personality andculture fit have just as much to do with getting the job as yourexperience and education.Myth 5: You’ll find the jobs online.Fact: Job boards are a starting point in your jobs search, butthey’re certainly not the only place to look. Face-to-faceinteractions, in-person networking, and social networkingopportunities will prove to be crucial in your job search.Myth 6: Don’t bother approaching companies in a hiringfreeze.Fact: Don’t let the words “hiring freeze” stop you. First, if nothingelse, you can build some contacts and establish relationships thatwill be useful later on, when the company starts to hire again.Second, employees continue to make changes and exceptions tohiring new employees will be made for replacement positions.Myth 7: Temporary jobs are dead ends.Fact: Temporary positions sound like a quick, easy way to makesome cash while you wait for something better to come along, butmany times these positions will turn into full-time opportunities orat least give you an opportunity to get a foot in the door for futurepositions more aligned with your skills. Some employers are verycautious about hiring new people, so they hire a
  • 4. temporary/contract worker and then, if things work out, they willhire them permanently.Myth 8: All you can do is send out resumes and wait.Fact: Just sending out resumes and waiting for your phone to ringwon’t land you a job. Get out there and be aggressive in your jobsearch. You can seek out positions that aren’t necessarily beingadvertised by networking with people and meeting up with hiringmanagers at your target companies. Blindly applying for a jobonline is rarely how you will land your next position.Myth 9: No one will hire you if you’ve been fired.Fact: Most potential employers won’t know you were fired by justlooking at your resume, unless you’re the one to bring it up. You’llhave the chance to win them over in the interview and when thetopic of why you left your last position comes up, you can dealwith it diplomatically. If you were fired in a job previous to yourlast position, it’s likely it won’t even come up.Myth 10: You should take the first job offered.Fact: It’s easy to think you should accept anything that comesalong, with the economy so slow, but make sure you take time toconsider as many options as possible. Consulting, freelancing, andeven taking on temp jobs are all better options than getting stuckin a job you know in advance you will hate.
  • 5. 5 QUESTIONS TO ASK ON YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW When it comes to job interview prep, much emphasis is put on having the right answers. But while youre struggling to come up with responses to queries on your biggest weakness and why you should be hired, dont forget to craft some smart questions, too. You will be judged, after all, by whatyou ask (or fail to ask).Candidates should always have questions prepared to ask duringthe interview. A lack of questions demonstrates a disinterest inthe position and lack of preparation for the interview. The questions you ask during an interview should give you adeeper understanding of the company and the job--and thatinformation can help you better sell yourself as the right personfor the position. Smart questions also show a prospectiveemployer that you care about where you work, that you havesome knowledge about the company, and that you understand theindustry overall.Ask a few relevant questions that demonstrate youve done yourresearch and that youre enthusiastic, and that will help you tomake an informed decision as to whether or not this is the rightopportunity for you.
  • 6. For your next interview, consider adding the following questions toyour repertoire:1. What happened to the last guy? Candidates should alwaysask what happened to the previous person who had the job. Youare trying to tell if the job holder is promoted up into the companyor if the company uses the person, burns them out and then theyleave.2. What do you like about working here? This question willgive you further insight into the companys corporate culture andwill give the interviewer a chance to talk about themselves for achange--and who doesnt like to talk about themselves?3. How do people typically work together here? Even if thepay and job content sound good, its important to understand theenvironment that you would be going into. Job seekers too oftenforget that this process is as much about them picking you and itis you picking them. You want to ensure the highest potential forsuccess and eventually growth.4. How can someone succeed at this job? This tells youexactly what theyre looking for in a candidate and allows you toreiterate your relevant strengths.5. Whats next in the hiring process? Too many intervieweesforget this easy question and are left wondering when to follow uplater on.Not all questions, however, are good. Avoid the following:1. What do you do? "That general question makes me cringeevery time I hear it asked. How can the person prove they areright for job if they dont even know what they would be doing?
  • 7. 2. How much is the pay? Dont ask about money too early inthe interview process. Its a distraction and will draw attention toyou as a dollar amount before they may be ready to evaluate yourpotential to add real and meaningful value.Likewise, dont ask about vacation days and paid holidays--waitfor a job offer before you tackle compensation and benefits. Thisis a time to show what you can offer the prospective employer.3. What are the hours? This question makes candidates lookmore like clock-watchers on the first interview rather than seriousprofessionals.4. Do you have other open positions? This offers theperception that the job you are interviewing for is of little or nointerest to you.5. Will there be a drug test? If you have to ask, it means youreconcerned about your ability to pass. HOW TO SPOT BAD COMPANY CULTURE There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to take a new job: salary, benefits, title, and length of the commute. Those things are all important, but there is something else to think about before you accept an offer: Will you be happy at the company?Bad company culture—often characterized by fear, intimidation, animosity, and laziness—is one of the biggest killers of jobhappiness. And being unhappy in your job can stunt your career in
  • 8. the long term, making you depressed and causing you todisengage.Dont end up unhappy because you took a job with a companythat has a bad culture. Instead, stay on the lookout for thesewarning signs when you go in for an interview.1. The interviewer is a jerk. Theres a good chance the personinterviewing you isnt all that good at conducting interviews. Still,an awkward and uncomfortable interview may be par for thecourse. Even with skilled interviewers you can expect to feel likeyouve been put on the spot as you discuss your skills andexperience. You shouldnt, however, feel like youre under attack. If the interviewer is a jerk—if there is an edge to his questions, ifhe judges rather than evaluates, if he insults you—you may begetting an inside look at how people treat each other at thecompany. In other words, the interviewers nastiness may becultural. If it starts there. Its downhill after they hire you. Also, be wary of someone who puts you on the defensive, tearsyou down, and then offers you a job. If youre as much of a loseras theyre making you out to be, why would they want to hireyou?2. You cant get a straight answer. A job interview goes twoways. While it’s certainly an opportunity for a prospectiveemployer to vet you, its also a chance for you to learn moreabout the place in which you may end up spending the bulk ofyour time. You can—and should—ask questions about thecompany. And you should get honest answers.Negative environments tend to try to hide.
  • 9. If an interviewer refuses to answer questions, gives guardedanswers, or appears to be lying, its a safe bet that he is trying tohide something. Good relationships, after all, are built on trust.3. Theres an unhappy vibe. When you arrive for yourinterview, try to get a look at the workplace. Do the people lookhappy and engaged? Can you hear the buzz of conversation andcollaboration? Have employees personalized their workspaces? Orare they downcast and silent, just slogging away at stark desksuntil 5 p.m., when they can run for the hills?Faces tell a thousand things without knowing it.If spending just a few moments in the office is unpleasant, thenspending your days there as an employee would be agonizing.4. The company has a bad reputation. Hop online and do alittle research. Search for company reviews, both from clients andemployees. If there are an overwhelming number of negativereviews—especially from clients, whose satisfaction should be atop priority— then consider yourself warned. If they are treating their customers poorly; you wont fare anybetter.------------------------------------------------------------------------ Free Income Tax Preparation &E-Filing EVERY SATURDAY FROM 9 A.M.
