  • 2. FROM THE DESK OF WOLFIE “WILL” BITEYU PhD. WHY THE TRADITIONAL COVER LETTER AND RESUME NEED TO DIE… Even a casual reader of the Used Job Shack will know how a killer resume can do just that to your job search at the entry or re- entry level. As many of you are finding out that, the resume is unneeded and unwanted for employers at the entry level. Entry-level jobs are just that, entry level. They many times hire 16-18 year olds for these jobs so why would they need a blank resume. Why experience is not required, many times skills are required. So, at best, you might want to find out what skills the employer needs and make a list of how you meet what the employer’s needs. This might be useful to helping you to sell yourself as the person the employer needs. Then again, every moment you spend creating this list and e-mailing/faxing it to the employer is another barrier to you getting that job. Time is critical and this employer (they wanted you to apply in person) is going to hire the first person who shows up and impresses them with that they are serious and that they really want the job. This is a fact (we have a book that proves that) and if you waste a moment, by trying to create a resume or in applying by an e-mail that the employer will not have time to read, then someone else will get your job. If you are doing your job search job correctly because you know when and where to be looking for new entry level jobs, you take several minutes to study their website before heading out to camp on the employer’s doorstep then, you do have a good chance of coming home with that new job. You know all this already. Now here is the kicker, the workforce establishment is finally listening to us and (even at the professional, corporate level) they are rethinking the worth of killer resumes and cover letters. Really! They are doing this as we speak. Here is a revolutionary article that finally agrees with us about how the traditional resume will cost you more jobs than it will ever get you. (Most of us here at the Job Shack will tell you that is true as we have been there and done that) Read this article and understand that they are talking to people who work in big corporate offices and boardrooms. Some of their suggestion, we will be looking at to see if they work at the entry level.
  • 3. It is time to bury the stuffy, outdated resume and cover letter that haunts job seekers and hiring managers alike. Here is what we should be doing instead. The resume is old. IT IS REALLY OLD. There is evidence that Leonardo da Vinci wrote the first resume in 1482 to the Duke of Milan. More than 500 years later, isn't it time to rethink the traditional resume? A recent article in New York magazine calls for the death of the traditional application packet, and we might have to agree. Here is why it is time to make the cover letter and resume obsolete, and how to break from the old ways: THEY’RE FULL OF UNRELIABLE INFORMATION Crafting a 100% accurate resume is as difficult as writing a completely honest self- appraisal: You can only be so insightful when it comes to your own personal ability. All the introspection you can muster will still produce skewed observation. Everyone plays well with others and is highly motivated in a fast-paced environment, on paper. You may feel “proficient" in CSS but there’s no way of knowing if you’re up to the skill level your future employer needs, based on a resume alone. Moreover, you will likely have to leave out parts of your skills or gloss over weaknesses to make your resume both readable and strong in the right places. Similarly, the average cover letter is full of hot air. We are forced to explain why we are just dying to devote our lives to one company, and use strings of descriptors as if we are writing our own report cards. Everyone plays well with others and is highly motivated in a fast-paced environment, on paper. The Fix: Requesting examples of work, project pitches, or giving test tasks that replicate real job duties are better gauges of ability than the applicant’s own words. THEY MAKE US UNINTENTIONALLY BIASED Studies show that the pronounceability of your name--or non-Westernization, in essence--affects employers’ bias toward candidates. Nevertheless, the assumptions do not stop there: We project biases based on location, prestige of education, race, and personal life factors. If you are a black woman and state-school graduate from the Midwest, you will have a harder time finding work than a single white Ivy League male--even if your application materials are identical.
  • 4. Those in authority are more likely to ignore requests from women and minorities, studies show. Moreover, if you are a minority, you are given less slack in writing errors. This does not mean the reader is a racist or malicious, per se, but brings to light the “confirmation bias,” defined by a recent Nextions study on the impact of racial bias on evaluation: A mental shortcut--a bias--engaged by the brain that makes one actively seek information, interpretation and memory to only observe and absorb that which affirms established beliefs while missing data that contradicts established beliefs. The Fix: Forgoing the cover letter and resume would cut down on information on which we naturally form these biases-- leveling the playing field. Anonymizing application material in early stages of judgment can help give everyone a more fair chance. THEY’RE A TIME SUCK Applicants spend days putting together a perfect application packet, and hiring agents spends weeks sifting through candidates’ materials, through all of the hyperbolic phrasing and degrees of design clarity, to fill a single position. Most of the time, its clunky work for all involved--and you still might not end up with the right person for the job. A bad hire can cost a company more than $50,000 in resources. With all of that time and effort, streamlining the process in early, easily culled stages cannot hurt. The Fix: Many companies opt now for an online survey-based application, where skills and scenarios are presented before a resume even hits the table. In lieu of a cover letter, some ask for an “about me” section in 140 characters--the length of a tweet--to evaluate creativity and concision under constraint. If we lean less on the traditional application packet process, social networks take more of the judgment; candidate's Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter presences could give more accurate glimpses into the lives of the newest member of the company culture. • 6. So are you going to get into a bad funk and pass up another good job or do something to help yourself? WANT BETTER WAY? Try this. They want you to fax them something that impresses them to want to interview you. (In theory) a resume is a way to organize your skills into an easy to understand and read format. Try this: NAME: DIRECT CONTACT NUMBER: * I saw your ad and I took some time to check your company out and I was impressed by your YELP Review. When I read how you went the extra mile to help your customer, I said that's me. Given that, we seem to share so much in terms of work experience and work ethics and that I do have the skills and abilities you are looking for to include _____years working in the Industry and I have a clean MVR. I HAVE WORKED FOR THE FOLLOWING COMPANIES IN THE PAST ___YEARS: COMPANY: ________________ ADDRESS - LOCATION: REFERENCE CONTACT: _______________________________ PHONE: ___________ E-MAIL: ______ WHERE (I put only the parts of my work history that related to what this employer is seeking…I do not leave the employer guessing if I have the specific skills – if I want to impress them I do this) _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ _______________________________ ___________________________ (REPEAT THIS FORMAT FOR YOUR OTHER JOBS THAT RELATE TO THIS JOB) * DIRECT PHONE NUMBER: This means where they can reach you immediately or you can return their call within an hour (you have an hour grace period before they call someone else - if you don't return their call quickly, they assume you didn't really want to work after all and might say something about your dependability and work ethic). =========================== URBAN VINE KITCHEN | HOPS | GRAPES Opening MAY 8th 2201 N. 7th Street CHEF MOD IS LOOKING FOR A FEW HIGHLY QUALIFIED PERSONALITIES to be a part of The MOD Restaurant Group LLC & his newest creation on 7th Street: Cooks start out at $10 but can grow that if proven. That means that there are 200-300 openings available on any given time. Tracking down these jobs is very time consuming and luck plays a large part of your AZ Mills Job search. The lazy job seeker (least likely to find work) will wait until they see a random advertisement or wait till someone tells you about an opening. This is easy, simple but, very ineffective and a waste of valuable time. By the time you learn about any opening; you are at the back of the line and it is a very long line. The shy job seeker may start calling stores (usually at random) and ask the same question over and over again until the tire or run out of minutes on their phone – whichever comes first. They will ask: “ARE YA HIRING?” This is ineffective at best because they are calling people who do NOT know them and who are many times too busy to take the time to talk to someone they do NOT know…the standard
  • 23. answer is: “Apply online” or “just “No…thanks for calling!” Remember it is very easy to say no over the phone than it is to say no in person. The shy but, bold computer job seeker will try to find the stores online and apply and apply but, with 180 stores; they will tire and fade fast as this is VERY time consuming. Even if they do all 180 stores, they still are not much closer to getting a job than they were before they started. WHY? Many retail managers, unless the hiring is done by a corporate recruiter instead of the store manager, will NOT take the time to go through the 50-10 new applications that they get every day. Small business owners and retail managers put much value on face-to-face meetings and put even more value upon in a person who was interested enough to present themselves in person. The go in person approach shows that you are motivated and that you are really interested in working for them. THE SUCCESSFUL JOB SEEKER WILL TAKE THE FOLLOWING STEPS. A. Take a day trip out to AZ Mills Mall. Start early. Make sure that you can get there and back ok. This involves looking at the bus schedules to know how long it will take you to get there, when the buses start and more importantly, when they stop. This will let you calculate if it is worth your while to job search here or not. B. After you determine that the location works for you, then visit the mall. Get a mall map (at the information desk). Walk the mall. Identify stores/restaurants that you are interested in working at based upon experience or interest in what they sell or what service they offer. C. Any place you are interested in; go in and talk to them about the store. Watch the store’s traffic flow, talk to some sales associates or staff to see what they are like. You would be really surprised by what people will tell you after you engage them in conversation…GOOD, BAD & UGLY…more importantly, you will now know if you want to work there or not…Can’t get that INTEL over the phone/internet… UHH??? D. If you are interested, NOW, Introduce yourself and ask if it is possible to talk to someone about “UPCOMING OPENINGS” instead of “are you hiring?” If they are not busy, most people will talk with you. Ask them their process of applying for any current or upcoming opening. IMPORTANTLY, ask them the process to follow up your application, to who you direct the follow up to and anything else that might help you join the company…subversive networking/mentoring 101. TAKE NOTES (you did bring a pen, note pad and a master application/resume/business card with you…DIDN’T YA?). E. FOLLOW THROUGH AND FOLLOW UP… F. GET THE JOB AND GO TO WORK.
