  • 1. 9 JANUARY 2014 SEVERAL REASONS YOU DIDN’T GET A JOB As we go into the start of 2014, how many of you are saddled with job search methodology that dates back to the 1950’s or worse, was designed to help you get a high-end job with a major corporation instead of helping you get a real world 2014 job? We recently did a survey of the job seeking tips being offered over the Internet or (believe this) by trained professional career counselors and what we found was shocking and disheartening in that 80% of the assistance (CON’T) THURSDAY NIGHT SPECIAL
  • 2. SEVERAL REASONS YOU DIDN’T GET A JOB (Continued) available was written by professionals to assist other professionals get a better corporate gig or was designed to assist new graduates get their first corporate job. Nowhere was there expert advice for the rest of us. Still worse, even that material is longin-tooth and was originally formulated back when major corporations roamed the economy much like the dinosaurs did in their day. It was a time when men wore skinny black ties, blue suits, worked for one company all their life and most women had been sent home (after WW2) from the defense plants to raise families in something called the suburbs. This was the 1950’s and much of the stuff being pushed (even today) by job gurus and career counselors was formulated back then to expediently move American Society either into a factory (manufacturing) complex or for the slightly brighter or educated into the cubicle womb of the massive corporations that ruled the US Economy. A very large segment of the current of the Workforce Industry is controlled by a rather conservative mindset of government and/or educational bureaucracies that hold to a core of traditional principals (for lack of a better term) that it is better to be safe than to be inventive.
  • 3. So they end up (after spending vast sums of your tax dollars on studies, focus groups and committees) recalculating, repackaging and slightly altering the original, the safe principals that they inherited from their fathers and (in some cases) their father’s fathers. Bottom line is we live in radical economic times and the job seeking paradigms and needs of the growing numbers of people displaced, left behind and excluded from the normal pathway to the American Dream are shackled with outdated, worn and no longer effective job searching techniques by the very people entrusted to help them. The current job seeker looking for entry level or re-entry employment are (for the most part) being feed a steady diet of advice, suggestions and are being taught methodologies that are not designed nor (ever) intended to help them get a job in the real world economy that they live. Much of this is laziness and a lack of understanding of what this real world economy of 2014 is all about. There seems to be a failure or the lack of will to develop new approaches, techniques and common sense methodologies that will address finding employment in an economy where “dress for success,” Killer Resumes and a sundry collection of thread worn advice are all worthless and cost applicants jobs instead of helping them. BELIEVED IN DRESS FOR SUCCESS
  • 4. Dress for Success teaches professional dress at all time. People taught this will tend to over dress (like a suit to a hardware store) as they are taught a course (but not told) that was basically designed for working in a corporation, governmental and/or educational setting or worse yet, (here in the real world) it paralyzes many job seekers who do not have professional clothes and because they do not have the proper clothes they do not go apply. The class teaches that an applicant’s appearance is critical to getting the job and there is another message hidden here that takes many back to the trauma of their school days and being too poor to have designer clothes like the rich kids. What they do not teach is that blue jeans and a polo shirt is professional attire in many real world occupations and when you show up better dressed than the interviewer or the other employees, you send many negative messages and (may) take the interviewer back to their schools days and they will relive that trauma as they interview you. They can’t stick it to those snooty rich kids from high school but, they NOT hire you. REAL WORLD DRESS FOR SUCCESS REAL WORLD SOLUTION: In the real world, everything is AZ Casual which means to go to the interview looking like you are ready to go to work not to a disco, to the playground or to a corporate board room unless you are applying for that kind of work. Remember, this is not the 1950’s and you aren’t a Mad Man (sorry lame TV Show reference).
  • 5. THEY BELIEVED THE MYTH OF THE POWER OF THE KILLER RESUME The current labor market is a mine field of bad advice; outdated information and a sea full people who are willing to share their own formula on how to get a job. Leading the way is the classical myth (that for the past 50 years has been sold to several generations) is the belief in the mystic, magical powers of a killer resume to level mountains, open any door , get you any job; soften the heart of the most coldhearted HR Managers. This myth was always over stated and promoted by people who usually made a living at making them or from people who spent a fortune in purchasing one. It is a very successively marketed bill of goods that has been sold to us by a billion dollar “Killer Resume” Industry here in America. At the library, (at last count) you will find 5000 book on the perfect resume. Can they all be right? The ideal that everyone needs a resume ties into the professional and corporate nature of the vast majority of the currently available job seeking training. They continue to foster the myth of the one-size-fits-all, killer resume out of the financial selfinterest of a billion dollar industry. To be fair, there are places where the need of a resume still ring true but, they are in that shadow world of corporations, the government or academia. If you are the Iron Chef, some corporate warrior or professional type, you still need this mighty beast and in this exclusive world it still welds almost magical powers in boardrooms across the world. But, the problem is that it is packaged, marketed and sold as the everyman solution (as a ticket to work) to a whole segment of the population (who may not have needed one to start with) by people who usually made a living at making them or from people who spent a fortune in purchasing one.
  • 6. Real World job seekers have been brainwashed into thinking that they cannot seek employment without a resume when (in fact) most jobs that they apply for did not require or request a resume as a price of admission into the world of work. Recent studies show that the belief in the mystical powers of the Killer Resume costs this category of job seekers sight out of ten jobs that they apply for. Most entry level, Real World jobs require an application and many times these are filled out after you have been interviewed and/or hired. In the Real World a resume is a loss leader and can (especially if you have a killer resume) work against you to the point of you not getting a job. This is due to an admitted snob factor and/or the related issue of the intimidation factor. In many occupations a killer resume leads to comment like “you are over qualified for this job”…”you wouldn’t like this job!”…or the worse “…and you applied for this job why?” If your killer resume is better than the person interviewing you has or worse yet, the person interviewing you doesn’t have a resume; you are not connecting on the peer level and more importantly, it just cost you that job. The other problem with that one-sizefit-all resume is that Real World job seekers believe in the Killer Resume’s ability, its magical powers to open any door, soften any employer’s heart and get you any job; so they send it out to over 400 companies. Sending out massive amounts of generic applications (one-size-fits-all) With no regards to whether or not that they match up with the
  • 7. experience or skills needed by the employer is the surest way to turn their job search into a failed mission… a disaster that could result in them shutting yourself off from future consideration of getting hired. Remember once the incorrect information is out there they can’t take it back. Sadly now they have 400 places that they can’t apply at in the future because they have an incorrect resume still on file. REAL WORLD SOLUTION: Job searching is not for the faint hearted, those who have (be nice) lazy job seeking skills or those who totally believe the urban legends (that are presented to them as the way to do successful get a job) because no one has ever stood up and said that this does not make sense or doesn’t work for real people needing a real job. We have tried hard (here at the Used Job Shack) to break our readers free of worn out job searching techniques, urban legends and just bad advice that actually prevented them (8 out of 10 job applications) from going to getting a job(s) that they were more than qualified for but, didn’t get because their job search was an assemblage of these worn out tips and urban employment myths. REMEMBER THE STORE OF THE “KING’S NEW CLOTHES?” THIS IS THE REAL WORLD SOLUTION FOR MOST REAL WORLD JOB SEEKERS IF THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THE RESUME IS (IN FACT) THE KING’S NEW CLOTHES OF THEIR JOB SEARCH. Realize that getting a job is not for the faint hearted for those who have (be nice) lazy job seeking skills or those who totally believe that their “KILLER RESUME.” The solution starts with an understanding that you must be willing to set-a-side that killer resume and start from scratch and build a new document that illustrates to a specific employer that you have the skills that the employer is seeking for a specific job. As we said, not for the faint hearted or those not really committed to getting a job. (SEE JOB SEEKING RULE # 4)

THEY NEVER PULL APPLICATIONS FROM THEIR WEBSITE UNLESS YOU ARE THE IRON CHEF AND ARE WILLING TO WORK FOR MINIMUM WAGE; doesn’t mean that they will hire you then…they may just want to see what is wrong with you. You need to bite the bullet on this if you want this job and really “GO OLD SCHOOL” after you apply online, look up their HR Office over at TERMINAL THREE at Sky Harbour Airport, get yourself spruced up in your best AZ Casual Clothes
  • 14. (Trim any facial hair or shave…they are nice people but, they are old school too) and go over and introduce yourself while asking them to pull your application. If you impress them with your personality, availability and your motivation, they will. One last thing, UMOM Campers already know this but, if they hire you, it is based upon how you answer one question (both in what you say but, also, in how you say it). The question ties into motivation for the prep cooks, cashiers, hosts and a combination of motivation tied into you skill set (experience here counts) for the productions cooks and Baristas. You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip! The reason why you may want to do this can be found at www.hmshost.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------         Blanco Sky Harbor HIRING Line Cooks Full-time Sauce Airport Location HIRING Host/ess & Cashiers Full-time Chelsea's Kitchen airport location hiring GREETERS full-time Chelsea's Kitchen hiring COOKS airport location $10-$12 Experienced Production Cooks / Prep Cooks $10-$12 Full-Time Barrio Cafe HIRING Prep Cooks Full Time + Benefits Starbucks Baristas/Leads IMMEDIATE OPENINGS Part/Full-Time LGO airport location hiring COOKS full-time + benefits $10hr TIPSTER: You will not see the actual position posted on the website, apply to the closest one available THEN, when you go visit their HR OFFICE at terminal #3…(YOU ARE GOING OVER, RIGHT?) have a list of the positions that you applied for. Tell this this way “I was interest in _____ position @ _______but, I am open to other opportunities that might be open or that you feel that I would be a better fit?” DO NOT…DO NOT reply “ANYTHING!” when asked what position are you interested in. That will take from a serious hero to zero with them. Remember if you don’t come across as serious about doing a specific job, specifically for them, then they will not do anything for you. By using the above script you show that you are serious but flexible…I know that it is playing games with words but, it is important in how you say this.
  • 15. DOUBLETREE BY HILTON PHOENIX-TEMPE 2100 S Priest Dr. in Tempe PART TIME DRIVER/BELL PERSON 2:00pm - 10:00pm Shift and will include weekends and some evening shifts during the week, however shifts can vary depending on business needs. Flexible schedule to accommodate all shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays is preferred. Must be 21 years of age or older with a minimum of three years of driving experience and a clean driving record. Applications are accepted at our Front Desk (quickly way to work is this) or you can (worse way) fax a resume over Fax resumes to (480) 804-5230. TIPSTER: The easiest (lazy) and not productive way to apply is to fax a resume. BUT REMEMBER RULE #4. Look at the full job description and does your killer resume have all of these specific key words and phrase? REALLY? If you have applied RULE #4 and created a new resume that incorporates all this...THEN, please fax it. But, remember that a fax may or may not go to the right person who may or may not see it. So if you fax, do your homework on whom they are and what they do and what makes them special before you call as you might need to have an intelligent conversation even on the phone. Phone Interviews are job killers and need to be avoided whenever humanly possible. So you will need to call, be connected to the right person and request that they pull your application and have a good reason for them to do that for you. "I need a job!" don't cut it or make people inclined to help you. WHY? Because Camper! You are not their cousin. Or are you? WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN EASIER to get spruced up, bite the bullet and go sit in their lobby (even if I need to wait...) to have a face-to-face opportunity to introduce myself and if I am on my "A" Game...didn't I go to the top of the list?
  • 16. HERE IS THE FULL JOB DESCRIPTION…Now, utilize RULE #4 to tear it apart and pull out the all the key words and phrases into your BREAKDOWN. Do your analyst and then create your narrative to add to your resume and then to fill out the application when you get there. Currently we have an opening for a part time Driver/Bell Person. Scheduled shifts primarily are 2:00pm - 10:00pm and will include weekends and some evening shifts during the week; however shifts can vary depending on business needs. Flexible schedule to accommodate all shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays is preferred. Must be 21 years of age or older with a minimum of three years of driving experience and a clean driving record. Responsibilities of a Driver/Bell Person include: * Transport guests to and from airport and within a 3 mile radius of the hotel in a company van. * Keep record of calls for service. * Deliver packages, suitcases, trunks, etc. * Escort incoming guests to rooms. * Assist guests with luggage. * Inspect guest room to ensure that it is in order, and that supplies are adequate. * Explain features of room such as operation of radio, television, in-room movie system, etc. * Offer information pertaining to available hotel services, points of interest, and entertainment attractions. * Deliver messages and run errands. * Set up sample rooms. * Respond to and resolve guest requests, complaints, or questions in a courteous and timely manner. * All other duties as assigned. Additional responsibilities and requirements: * Must be 21 years of age of older. * Minimum of three (3) years of driving experience and a clean driving record. * Must be able to obtain required airport credentials. * Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the English language to effectively communicate with guests, associates, and vendors. * Ability to accurately report information. * Ability to scrupulously follow all Driftwood and hotel policies and procedures. * Attend required meetings. * Projects and assignments are completed thoroughly, professionally, and with care. * Conducts him/herself (acts and dresses) professionally at all times; sets standards for all
  • 17. associates. * Conveys company information, decision, or problems to appropriate parties on a timely basis. * Minimum lifting of 40 pounds. * Minimum pushing/pulling of 40 pounds. * Pushing, bending, stooping, upward reaching, manual dexterity, hearing, seeing, writing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let’s start with…Truthfully…  How many of you have all (most) of these skills and abilities?  How many of you have done all (or most) of these things in your every day jobs?  At some point in each of your jobs, did you EVER do any of these things? Didn’t EVERY job you EVER had required that you do many of these things?  How many of you have these skills and abilities encoded into your “KILLER RESUME?”  How many of you DO NOT have all of these things incorporated into your resume and/or (especially) your application because (guess what?) they didn’t get to see your “KILLER RESUME” and the computer didn’t accept it instead of the application?  How many of you cut-n-pasted your killer resume into the application because it is “sooo good?”  STILL WONDER WHY YOU DIDN’T GET CALLED FOR AN INTERVIEW?  WANT TO CHANGE THIS TREND? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phoenix Country Club 2901 N. 7th Street Phoenix Arizona 85014 Phoenix Country Club is always eager to talk to people who are sincerely interested in providing topdrawer service to the Club, its Members and Guests. We are a private membership Club and seek employees who are comfortable in that environment.

Much less know what they need to do to get it. The Question is do you really? Do you want this job? If the answer is “YES” here you go. You might want to take notes.  The country club is a high-end place that hires regular people but, you must look job ready, you must be educated on who they are and what they do.  You must be polite...a "YES Sir" or a "No Mum" goes a long way here.  You MUST be available to work the hours posted and be flexible to other emergency hours.  You need to go over there looking AZ Casual "work ready" sharp.  They are a conservative bunch so cover up and take out anything removable.  Experience is helpful but, not the first thing to be considered in hiring you. They will hire on the above presence you make and on your personality, love of working with people and on teams. So get yourself put together, become educated and hit their HR Office at no later than 10AM (I would go at 9:30 AM). Bring your best "A" Game and impress them. Make them respond to you “you know a lot about my company!” I asked you if you really wanted this job...this is what the selected candidate will be willing to do to get it. Are you that person? Everyone is welcome to apply but, only a select few will know what you now know and even fewer will have it in them to do.

How many times did you get an interview? Did you get hired? We would assume not if you are still reading this. You say they never hire anyone. But, is that true? Of course not! What did you do wrong? You didn’t follow RULE #4 here at the Used Job Shack. (Any regular reader of the Used Job Shack or who visits to the Used Job Shack Job Board knows all about RULE # 4 and how critical it is to getting selected to for an interview.) This job (OR ANY JOB) with Sears is a classic case of Rule # 4. They have a similar system of select as does Costco (a little less completion as more people want to work for the high paying Costco) and that system will reject 8 out of 10 applications, they will interview 2 and (as with Costco) hire 1. The math is simple! Knowing how to increase your odds of being one of the two to be interviewed is a skill that we have repeatly tried to teach you over the past months. Rule # 4 is the key that you need.

Years’ Experience 0 - 1 Year Experience Preferred Minimum Education High School / GED ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TIPSTER: Here is a classic case where Rule # 4 would be the diference in putting together an application and for it to have a serious impact upon whether or not the company’s computer and recruiters would sellect you. Otherwise…GOOD LUCK! Hope your killer resume helps you! OH, WAIT! If your application is not sellected by the computer, then, no one will see your killer resume. You cut-n-pasted your killer resume into the application. OH WAIT! Did you have all of the key words and phrases in the proper order on your resume? Did you know how to take those key words, phrases and write an intelligable narrative for each job that the recruiter would see… OH WELL! Better luck next time…you’ll have to wait 6-8 weeks to replace what you just uploaded…SORRY!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basic questions about past experiences and customer services examples. Set up an interview for the next week. The interview was fairly easy. Same basic questions. They also have you act out a little just to see if you could be sympathetic. Got offered a position the same day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE I applied online and the process took 1+ week Interview Details – Did one phone interview. Also had to take multiple tests on a computer which took 2 hours. Then I interviewed with 2 managers. The questions they ask where very different from any normal interview. They also do role playing in the interview. The manager also said I would be hired at full time 32 but could work more which is only true for 4 weeks during Christmas. I was also told there is room to grow which is true but don’t expect a Pay raise for learning new skills Interview Question – Tell me how you achieved a goal. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • 26. CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE I applied online and the process took a day Interview Details – had to listen to calls for about 30 minutes or so. I think they actually forgot to come get me but after working there it wouldn't surprise me at all. Then I interviewed with two managers and had to do some role playing. Interview was easy for me. No unusual questions and nothing unexpected. Interview Questions  Greatest strengths  Greatest weakness -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Top 7 SEARS interview questions       Why do you want to work for Sears? What do you know about Sears? What are your career goals? What are your biggest strengths? How long would you expect to work for Sears if hired? Do you know anyone who works for Sears?  Why should Sears hire you? For one, the interview questions “give us reasons to hire you”, “why should we employ you” or “what can you bring to our company” is something that differentiates the best candidates from the other good candidates. This question deals with your ability to sell yourself. Think of yourself as the product. Why should the customer buy? WEAK ANSWERS:  “I AM A HARD WORKER.” This is a really trite answer — almost anyone can say he or she is a hard worker.  “BECAUSE I NEED A JOB.” This answer is about YOU — “they” want to know what you can do for “them.”  “I SAW YOUR AD AND COULD DO THE JOB.” This answer lacks passion and purpose.
  • 27. STRONGER ANSWERS:  “I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO FILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS JOB – solve customer problems using my excellent customer service skills.”  “I HAVE THREE YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CUSTOMERS IN A VERY SIMILAR ENVIRONMENT.”  “I HAVE THE EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE IN THE AREA OF CUSTOMER SUPPORT THAT IS REQUIRED IN THIS POSITION.” ================================================================== SPECIAL ISSUE: COSTCO! “…GETTING A JOB HERE IS NOT FOR THE LAZY APPLICANT…” Most people who apply at Costco will NEVER hear from the regarding their application. In fact 8 out of 10 will not get an interview and from there 1 person MAY get an offer. WOW! That’s tuff! It is impossible to get a job there right? It is impossible ONLY if you don’t know the secret(s) to getting your application seen and thus becoming one of the two that actually get considered. This is not for the faint hearted, those who have (be nice) lazy job seeking skills or those who totally believe that their “KILLER RESUME” is magical and it is soooo good that it can open any door or get them any job…these will be some of those 8 out of ten applicants who don’t get interviewed and the surely won’t be the one hired. Is it that hard? No…but, you must be willing to set-a-side that killer resume and start from scratch. First thing you need to know is… RULE # FOUR This is a very simple question, but in order to give a suitable answer to the recruitment position, you must know how to answer. You need to know about the company you are willing to work for and read their job description. When you are asked this question, tell them that working for Sears will be a challenging and beneficial experience to you. • 29. TIPSTER: *THE EMPLOYER’S “PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK” MEANS NO ARRESTS DURING THE PAST 5 YEARS. Betcha if I hadn’t told you that they only go back 5 years, then, you would have walked away from this offer. HOW MANY OTHER JOBS ARE YOU WALKING AWAY FROM BECAUSE YOU ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT THE EMPLOYER MEANT TO SAY? Here you would have been wrong…! REMEMBER: “…reliable transportation to and from work…” remember that this does not mean you MUST have a car. If they did, the would say “Do you have a car?” This means can you get to work?…they don’t care if you can get home…that’s your problem for picking a job so far away from where you live….I mean, like, there was not any jobs closer? So DO NOT add to the employer’s question, DO NOT complicate it…KEEP IT SIMPLE! If you can get there the correct answer is “YES!” REMEMBER: Do not assume you know what the employer wants or needs…You could be wrong? What does “PASS” mean? When I was in school, I could “PASS” with 69% - I didn’t need 100%. If you do your job here correctly (getting the employer to want to hire you by front loading the conversation with the skills, abilities that they need before you drop the “F” Word on them…), you might find them closer to 69% rather than 100%...betcha! ================================================================= Scottsdale Waterfront 7135 E. • 32. We are always accepting applications for janitorial maintenance, landscaping gardeners, security guards, parking attendants, shuttle drivers and building engineers. TIPSTER: SPOILER ALERT! Campers! Apply ONLY online and you may be as old as Uncle Bob before they call you in for an interview? Like HMSHOST, they receive so many applications because they are a national (and one of the largest) facilities management company. RULE # 4 is critical here to a point but, there is still an extra step that you must do to actually get an interview. You must attend one of their occasional job fairs or (better yet and they tell you to do this very thing!) GO INTO ONE OF THEIR LOCAL OFFICES and introduce yourself. REMEMBER THE CONCEPT OF MAKING YOURSELF A SERIOUS CANDIDATE? Remember how HMSHOST tells you to apply online but NEVER pulls applications until after you have tracked down their HR Office and impress them with your “A” Game and show them that you are ready to go to work – only then, do they pull your applicant off their computer. Remember why? Because till you did that, you were not a serious candidate in their mind and if you are not serious then they do not need to waste their time with you…they have far too many people applying to care. OK, campers! Ditto here! Till you show up and their office totally serious and prepared they more than likely not call you. Rule #4 helps and when they do pull your application, it will be a deal maker because your application will be what they are looking for – if you did Rule #4 correctly. APPLY ONLINE THEN, SPRUCE UP YOUR “A” GAME AND MAKE A BEE-LINE TO THE NEAREST ABM OFFICE! LOCAL OFFICES ARE LOCATED AT: THERE ARE 7 OFFICES IN YOUR AREA. A. • 33. Many of their jobs pay very well and they always have a large number of openings. Your background MAY be an issue as many of their locations are in schools, government offices, businesses or large factories. Their job description(s) are fairly good at telling you if you should apply or not. The concept is that if they do not say anything, apply and roll the dice…DO NOT ASSUME YOU KNOW…If you go over there with you “A” Game and you have done your job correctly in frontloading the conversation with your skills (THAT MATCH WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR) and got them wanting you…Betcha you will not need 100% to pass their check…maybe, you can slide in with a 69% or they will try to find something for you? Remember that they are a billion dollar corporation with 100,000 employees. • 41.  Or you can get another dead-end job that didn’t require you do some prep work and research! Countless people who came simply looking for a job now find themselves leading dozens, or even thousands of people while enjoying a career One of the many reasons why Chipotle is unlike other fast food companies is the fact that nearly all of the leaders are promoted from our crew. Many restaurant companies hire "professional" managers to run their restaurants and almost never look to their crews for new leaders. But last year at Chipotle, 97% of our general managers were promoted from our crews and because our company is growing, there's plenty of opportunity. It's a lot of hard work, not recommended for someone collecting a check!!!
  • 42. IT IS CRITICAL TO GETTING HIRED You MUST watch and take notes on each of the videos…they will ask you questions about them and they will send you home if you have not watched…really!!!! http://careers.chipotle.com/enus/careers/get_rolling/get_rolling.aspx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j28bdq-q9l0 CURRENT OPENINGS… Complete openings here… http://jobs.chipotle.com/ Countless people who came simply looking for a job now find themselves leading dozens, or even thousands of people while enjoying a career that is totally fulfilling, fun, and financially rewarding beyond anything they thought possible. It's pretty simple: If you work hard, you'll get noticed and before you know it, you'll be on a roll. When Steve Ells started Chipotle back in 1993, he only intended to open one restaurant—not a chain of more than 1,200. Because of that, he broke all of the rules and Chipotle became a new kind of fast food restaurant. In fact, we do just about everything differently and it starts with the people we hire to work in our restaurants. We've learned that experience in other fast food restaurants isn't of much value at Chipotle. That's because we really cook food at Chipotle. And that's just the beginning of what we do differently. Our Crew members learn what they need to do on the job and in turn; they become the future leaders of our company. It's on-the-job training like you have never had before. http://www.chipotle.com/en-us/chipotle_story/chipotle_story.aspx
  • 43. USED JOB SHACK INSIDER: WHAT IS IT LIKE TO WORK THERE? “Hard work truly pays off and Chipotle will teach you success in the industry” Manager (Current Employee) - I have been working at Chipotle full-time for less than a year Pros – Great advancement opportunities. I've had 3 promotions in management in less than a year!  Great benefits.  Free food during work shifts.  Proud to work for this particular restaurant chain.  Great people and products. Advice to Senior Management – Upper area management has been good to us. There are and always will be lazy in-store managers using their crew to pull all the weight. Don't be that manager everyone talks bad about! Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company ----------------------------------------------------------------IT'S A LOT OF HARD WORK, NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SOMEONE COLLECTING A CHECK!!! “They hand everything to you, Are you willing to work for it?” Service Manager (Current Employee) - I have been working at Chipotle full-time for more than a year “YOU CAN GET TO ANY POSITION (Kitchen Manager, Service Manager, Apprentice, General Manager, and Restaurateur etc.) AS LONG AS YOU TRY YOUR BEST EVERY DAY…”  Free food every day you work  Good morals (food with integrity)  Supports your community by making fund raisers and making coupons only available at local events.  Wants YOUR friends to work there  Teaches you real culinary skills and proper food handling  Provides employees with a lot of benefits Cons – IT'S A LOT OF HARD WORK, NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SOMEONE COLLECTING A CHECK. The company will fire you if you don't want to move up after a certain amount of time once in management. It's one of those jobs that need to be taken seriously, it's a team effort. One weak link and your day are going to suck. High pressure job, people seem to get very dramatic when things start to get tense Makes you look silly because you take a fast food job seriously hahaha! Advice to Senior Management – Keep Rocking guys! You guys are making a huge difference! Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
  • 44. ==================================================== USED JOB SHACK INSIDER: THE INTERVIEW PROCESS... Crew Member - I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Chipotle in September 2013. Interview Details –I applied online and within a week was called to schedule an interview the next day. I dressed in black dress pants and a nice blouse for the interview and arrived 10 minutes early for the manager to begin it about 10 minutes later than expected. He had the formal interview sheet with questions and asked me to tell him about myself, what my friends would say about me, what I know about Chipotle and it I had the 13 characteristics they look for and why. I would suggest researching the company a bit so you can tell them what you know. After the interview he scheduled a follow up with the GM the next day. At that interview I arrived 5 minutes early and waited about 20 minutes to be interviewed by a manager and an apprentice. They had no interview sheet and asked me questions about myself, past experiences, the company's history and what I wanted to do with my future. The interview was relaxed and a great experience and they left me to discuss. About 5 minutes later they offered me a job and there was negotiation with my wage and I am very pleased with the result. The interview process was positive and very professional. INTERVIEW QUESTION –  Tell us about yourself.  What do you know about Chipotle?  What do you want to do in your future?  How would your friends describe you?  Crew Member - I applied online and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Chipotle in September 2013. Interview Details –I applied online and within a couple days received an email saying they would like to interview me. I went to the interview and it was with the apprentice. He was really nice and the interview was short and easy. He said he would set up a 2nd interview but this time with the Restaurateur. The 2nd interview was surprisingly a group interview; there were 6 other girls in the interview. Basically the restaurateur just asked a question and we all went around answering them. All the questions were basic and not hard. Mainly just questions about yourself. Ex: "why do you want to work here"? Oh and they will ask questions about what you know about Chipotle. Just make sure you know what Food with Integrity means. You can find all that stuff on their website. She then said we would get an email or call saying if we got the job. I received a phone call later that day saying I got the job! I've been working there for 3 months now and love it! :) Interview Question –None. All were basic and simple questions Crew Member - I applied through an employee referral and the process took 2 days interviewed at Chipotle.
  • 45. Interview Details –Easiest way to get a job at Chipotle is through a referral, which was exactly my case. My friend told me to come by at 5:00 pm to speak with the General Manager. The GM handled me the application, after he would look through at my application right in front of me and ask brief questions about my work experience. Then later that day the GM called and we set-up a formal interview. We sat down and he started asking about why I want to work at Chipotle, What I like about Chipotle, and What do i know about Chipotle... After answering those questions positively he said that it was me smiling is the reason he would consider hiring me. Then after we set up a second interview... In the second interview, all he asked is if I’m willing to move up in the company and i said yes and he offered me the job... Interview Question –  How many times do you wash your hands when you go to the bathroom? Prep Cook - I applied in-person and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Chipotle in August 2013. Interview Details –Initially they called for another family member to come in for a group interview. I stole the interview. Came in the next day, they sit you in a large circle and go one by one asking about experience, why they should hire you, what you know about the company, what you know about the culture. It ended up being 8 of us reiterating the same online info about Chipotles culture, owner, how it started, why. Etc. I handed them my resume and told them after the group interview that I wasn't called in but I came anyway. They told me to come back tomorrow for a second interview because it showed charisma. After the second interview it took close to 2 weeks for them to call me in to fill out paperwork for the hiring process. INTERVIEW QUESTION: “No question was difficult, you will need to know a good amount of info on the company and have it memorized…” Anonymous Employee - I applied through other source and the process took 4+ weeks interviewed at Chipotle in August 2013. Interview Details –I received an email about a job fair for Chipotle. I attended the job fair through Snagajob. They basically had me fill out an application and when I turned it in they had a manager interview me. I really didn't know much about Chipotle at all, so the manager gave me the spiel about how Chipotle started and Food with Integrity. If you are friendly and not shy, I think they will still hire you. Interview Question –  Why do you want to work for Chipotle? Negotiation Details –Negotiation was easy for me. I asked for 8.50, and I got offered the job at 8.50. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  • 46. Crew Member - I applied online and the process took 5 days - interviewed at Chipotle in August 2013. Interview Details –I applied online and a few days later I got an email inviting me to the job fair being held at the location. I got there about 15 minutes early and had to put my name and phone number on a list along with 6 other people who had come for interviews. After about 30 minutes one of the crew members came out and took the first person on the list to a booth for a 1 on 1 setting interview (which I appreciated since I would hate to do a group interview and compete for attention and answers). My turn came and it actually turned out to be a really fun interview as she seemed interested in learning about who I was as a person and not some drone that needs to list my qualifications in order to impress her. SHE ASKED ME THREE QUESTIONS I WAS EXPECTING:  Why do you want to work at Chipotle?  Tell me something about yourself, what do you like to do?  And do you know anything about Chipotle's history? They are absolutely guaranteed to ask what you know about the company’s history so be sure to read a few things about Steve Ells and 'Food with Integrity' on the site. They'll also tell you about the history in more detail after asking so stay responsive during that. The rest of the interview we talked about ambitions and what it is like working at the specific chipotle and how close the crew is. It became a really comfortable interview for the both of us; it was cool having such a mutual bond in such a short time. Honestly, I think the most important qualities you need to have for the interview is being comfortable with yourself, embracing what you're into, and emphasizing what you can bring into the chipotle team and that you will be able to get along with everyone. It was like a 20 minute interview and by the end she told me to come back the next day to have a second interview with the manager. The next day I arrive and another person from the interviews the previous day came in shortly after me. We actually were the only two who talked to each other the previous day so it was cool that we seemed to be the 'final two'. We were talking about our interviews and comparing what we were asked (same exact stuff) and what we answered as we waited for the second interview. The manager finally came out with another employee and they interviewed us both together which I didn't really think I would like, but we kind of played off each other’s answers so it became more of a team effort which was cool. The questions were basically the same as the previous days, the only new one being, "What are 3 qualities that describe you?" She asked about our availability and asked if we had any questions. Then she and the other employee went in the back to discuss and shortly three other employees came to talk to us and get to know us. They told us about their positions and the busiest days/times and asking us questions about our lives. I think they were mainly trying to see if we were easy to get along with and likable. I'm assuming we were because when they left to go to the back, the manager came back and said she was hiring both of us. Interview Question –Before my first interview ended, she asked  "What superhero would you be if you could choose?"
  • 47. Crew Member - I applied online - interviewed at Chipotle in August 2013. Interview Details –I put in my application. About a week later I was called in for an interview. I went for my interview and was interviewed by a group. It was the manager and two crew members. It lasted for about 10 minutes at the most. A couple days later I was called back in for another interview. There, I was interviewed by a manager in training and she decided I could meet the crew. So, I went in the back and talked to everyone. After that, they said they would call with a decision. No more than a week later I received a call saying I was selected for employment. I went back to the store about a week later to fill out paperwork. After that I waited about a week and a half to get called in for orientation. I went and a week after that I was called with a start date. Interview Question –They always ask why you shouldn't be hired. It's a trick question. Just tell them why they should hire you. ====================================================== Valet Attendant - Throughout the valley of the sun (Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Mesa and many other locations) American Valet Company is a full-service valet, shuttle, and garage management organization based out of Arizona serving the Southwest since 1980.
