Very basic interview. Was called in for a second interview and it was more serious. Then the next day i was called for the job. Interview Question –  What are your weaknesses? Negotiation Details –They asked me what i was looking for (shift wise) and i said days or nights. They only had nights available. They also told me what they were going to pay me and when I would start. CASHIER AT WHOLE FOODS - ACCEPTED OFFER – INTERVIEWED
  10. 10. Interview Details –I applied online at home on a Thursday and was called the next day to come in for an interview the following Monday. I arrived and waited for a few minutes before a manager (I am assuming?) came to greet me and we sat down for the interview. It was very casual, at some counters near the checkout. She had a print off of my application with her but I gave her a copy of my resume anyway. She asked about 5 or 6 questions before asking for a reference at my previous job. Know the brand identity and culture! Interview Questions • What does a guest service mean to you? • What does teamwork mean to you? • Why do you want to work at Whole Foods? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------BAKERY TEAM MEMBER AT WHOLE FOODS - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Applied online and was contacted a couple days later. Had two interviews (one with front end & other with bakery after I mentioned coffee experience), which both went great. Know WFM core values and history of company, questions will be asked! Both interviews were very casual and relaxed, with plenty of laughs in between. A couple of days later I received another phone call regarding a "second" interview with the store TL. It was short and sweet about my schedule and flexibility (if I could close/open, our term for "close at 1030 then open at 5am the next day), etc. I don't know if all TL interviews are like that, but mine was! I think a couple days after that, I received a phone call from the ATL offering me the position and I have loved it ever since! Interview Question –Are you a circle or a square? Negotiation Details –The TL and ATLs told me the beginning hourly pay for each team member during my interview with the chance of raises at the 6 month and year reviews. =================================================================== SEAFOOD TEAM MEMBER AT WHOLE FOODS - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – I was very determined to work for whole foods, where I was in a bad spot with my current working job, and after I had done my research and realized what a great company wfs' was to work for. I applied, applied, and I applied some more. I took the time to go into the store to introduce myself to every manager in the departments I had applied in. My first application was for a management position in the seafood department, although I had no management experience. I introduced myself to the manager he asked me a few questions, asked me to wait so he could look up my application, said he would look over it and give me a call, I re-checked my application online, and it stated the status of my application was "pursuing other candidates, but encouraged to apply for other jobs,"
  11. 11. So, I did, and I received an interview on a Saturday in the grocery department, after my 30 minute interview of basic questions, "schedule restrictions, what does organic mean to you, etc." The interview was concluded with, "I have a lot of people to interview, if you do not hear from me in a week, feel free to give me a call to check the status, I am very busy and can sometimes forget." I did some shopping afterwards and took the time to touch base with more managers in departments I had applied; I also went to touch base with the Seafood Manager to thank him for his words of encouragement, even though he had not chosen to hire me. He wished me luck and told me to let him know how it goes, The following Thursday (the day before I had planned to call the grocery manager to check about the job) I received a call from the seafood manager, asking if I had heard back from anyone, and that if not, he had a position that just opened up and he would really like to have me in his department if someone else had not snatched me up yet. I was THRILLED! I went in for an "interview" with him, he showed me around the department, gave me the "low-down" of what a day of work there would be like, and asked me if I had any issues with the bare-necessities I would need to work there. He offered me the position, full-time, and that was just last week, I am currently awaiting my background screening to clear and schedule my "day 1" training class. I cannot wait to start my career with whole foods, and leave behind my junk of a job I have now, PERSISTENCE REALLY DOES PAY OFF! Interview Question –What does Organic mean to you? Negotiation Details –There was no negotiation, I was more than thrilled with the offer with it being almost $3 more than what I am currently making... ================================================================ FREE E-BOOK COPIES OF THE USED JOB SHACK! 12. 12. LOCALIZE YOUR JOB SEARCH AND YOU CAN ENHANCE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING HIRED… STAY WITHIN 5 MILES OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD (85008) IN CENTRAL THE PHOENIX/AIRPORT AREA….AS THIS IS YOUR SEARCH LOCAL ZONE… STEP ONE: APPLY ONLINE… http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ DID YOU KNOW? 80% of all applications get thrown away because you NEVER showed the employer that you had the skills that THEY were looking for. You got too caught up with explaining what you did instead of showing how that related to what this employer wanted. HINT: If I was an auto mechanic applying for a courtesy clerk position at Food City…the last thing I would talk about would be repairing a car…I would talk about dealing with my customers, resolving their problems…MAKE SENSE? TRY IT! IT DOES WORK MIRACLES! YOU MUST HAVE OPEN AVAILABLE TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR PT WORK. STEP TWO: GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF…If you really want the job, demonstrate that by going over to the store and introducing yourself…If you can’t or won’t…this tells the employer everything they need to know about how seriously you REALLY want their job…NOT! Most importantly, this says that you do not care enough…that you might do this job…OR NOT? NO ONE wants to hire the person who demonstrates that they would take this job as a last resort…everyone wants to hire the person who is excited…who likes/love the work and who appreciates the opportunity to get THIS job. STEP THREE: Explain that you understand that you are being offered an opportunity and that you appreciate it…because the employer believes that they are offering you an opportunity and most applicants (mostly those not hired) never demonstrate that they get it…little-a-lone that they appreciate it. At the end of the interview, tell the employer that you still want the job…these things make a big difference and many times…means the difference between getting hired or not. APPLY NOW FROM OUR ONLINE CAREER CENTER AT http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ NOTE: ALL APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED AND A CRIMINAL RECORD WILL NOT DISQUALIFY YOU FROM EMPLOYMENT!
  13. 13. The nature of the offence and how it related to the position that you are applying for plus the age of the offence and the circumstances of the offence. TIPSTER: HUMANIZE THIS! There is a big difference in I stole to feed my babies versus I stole that big screen TV from WALMART…GET IT???? http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ ====================================================== THE OLD FAT MAN SITTING ON THE PARK BENCH ANSWERS AN ANGRY CAMPER: “YOU LIED ABOUT SAFEWAY!” Many times in dealing with our previously incarcerated job seekers, we have found that they tend to blame the “F” word for all their difficulties in finding re-entry employment. It is an easy associate but, NOT always true. While blaming that foul, evil letter “F” that you tattoo on your forehead every new day of your job searching seems the correct thing to do but, you give it too much credit. Why did you NOT get hired at (say) Safeway had less to do with your background unless your past is directly linked or associated with the job you are applying for or you are totally exhibiting no remorse: • “YEA! I would steal that 55 inch TV again…Hell, I didn’t really steal it but it was Super bowl Sunday…I would have brought it back on Monday…REALLY! Would I do it again…well…not till Super Bowl Sunday…” • “Yea, I shot him but, he deserved it! He had not right to talk to me in that tone!” Understand that we used extreme examples but, they are true examples that applicants told their potential, new bosses at the interview. Hopefully you get the serious point of that their offensive is not the real issue but their attitude and that creates fear that the applicant has not learned anything in the process and would be more inclined to repeat the behavior as they see nothing wrong with what they originally did. If you were the hiring employer, would you want that on your watch? Would you be willing to take a risk? You know that answer! More importantly, if you did not get hired at Safeway, might have more to do with your availability. Please remember that the job description (you did read it,
  14. 14. didn’t ya?) told you that candidates with open availability will always be on the “A” list when they select interviewees because most stores run extended hours and as the new guy, they are hiring you to work the shifts that their older, more seasoned employees don’t want to work. That’s reality! That you couldn’t work evenings, weekends or holidays has more to do with you not getting hired that the old “F” word. That you are living in Central Phoenix and the location you applied for is in Anthem might be a good reason you didn’t get selected unless they knew you were looking to move out to Anthem (and that you communicated that to that local manager before or right after you completed the application…they do not have ESP or ESPN if they don’t have cable). The application and how you filled it out would be the primary reason why you were not selected. No slight on you because 8 out of 10 applications get tossed because they were done incorrectly. If you didn’t use our Rule # 4 formula then, you did the application incorrectly. Not bragging because it is true. If you didn’t know to get the full job description, didn’t know how to break it down to the skills and abilities that the employer was looking (screening) for…if you didn’t know how to take that and create a narrative that incorporates successfully all of the key words and phrase then you missed it by a mile – unless old lady luck was shining on you or riding shotgun with you that day. If she wasn’t and you didn’t get called…then, I would say that is why they didn’t call you because you never showed the employer that you have the specific skills and abilities that they spelled out in the job description. Please remember that just because it requires no experience does not mean that the job did not require certain skills or abilities – and sometimes a lot of them. Because you were not schooled on Rule # 4, I will cut you some slack. But, that is a method of correctly filling out an application and you should become schooled in it if you want to be successful in this new age of job searching. So...not knowing the step-by-step process you took…I would still content that there were other factors rather than (our old whipping boy) the “F” word, as to why Safeway didn’t call ya…SORRY DUDE! ================================================================== FREE E-BOOK COPIES OF THE USED JOB SHACK! 16. 16. COURTESY CLERK AT KROGER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – Applied in store and was called to interview the next day. Was very quick. Just asked very basic background questions. I don’t think there were any personality questions at all. Overall very easy process which is expected for a very low skilled job Interview Question –No difficult questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – The interview was pretty formal and easy. The Associate Manager was the one that did the interviewing and she just asked the basic retail questions. It seems that if you get an interview you'll more than likely get the job as long as you don't say anything that would jeopardize that. The manager actually spent more time talking about the company than actually asking questions. She also liked the fact that I was in college since many of the employees there were attending a college or university. They also do an oral drug test with you right away in the office after the interview. Interview Question –There wasn't any difficult or unexpected questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – I applied online. I was contacted 2 weeks later for an interview. I arrived early, and had to wait. The interviewer finally came to interview me. Was immediately asked to see my identification and SS card. She copied it, and then proceeded to give me papers describing the duties of cashier and courtesy clerk. I was asked questions regarding education, past experience, scheduling availability, customer service, and why did I want to work for Kroger. She went over the pay scale, training, scheduling, dress code, lunch/breaks, and insurance. Afterwards, I was given an oral drug test and back ground check. Exactly one week later, I was contacted to come in and do paperwork. Training was then scheduled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Initially received a phone call to schedule an interview several days after my online application. I arrived a bit early so I had to wait for about ten
  17. 17. minutes upstairs, I guess they weren't expecting me to be prompt. When my interviewer arrived, it was fairly straightforward and quick from then on. We went into the office and I was asked simple questions about myself, my work experience, and why I wanted to work for Kroger. At that point, the conversation shifted to the job description, work environment, expectations of me, and the drug test I'd have to take. I then was given time to ask questions, and then taken to the HR person to take my drug test. I was called a few days later when the results were in to schedule training and orientation. Easy process and the front end manager were very nice throughout it all. Interview Question –There weren't really any difficult or unexpected questions. They were fairly simple and straightforward. The only one that wasn't about me or my history was why did I want to work for Kroger, and that was simple to wing my way through. Easiest interview I've ever had. =================================================================== CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Applied online. Standard online application included basic info and a Q&A assessment test. Do not "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree" with anything and you should pass it just fine. HR called and asked me to come in for an interview with the manager. Wear something nice Men: Collared button-down shirt (tucked in), slacks/khakis (no shorts) and belt (preferably one that matches shoe color), loafers or not-worn-out sneakers. No flip-flops or sandals. Women: Nice shirt with slacks or skirt. A dress is ok too, but make sure it is covered (if sleeveless) and an appropriate length (right above knee or longer). Shoes can be dress sandal to high heels. No flip-flops. THE MANAGER MADE IT A POINT TO TELL ME I LOOK POLISHED AND PRESENTABLE. HE HIRED ME AFTER A 5 MINUTE INTERVIEW. Interview Question –Standard interview questions, including:  Why do you want to work here?  Why are you a good fit for this company?  What are your goals in the next few years? ========================================================================== Trader Joe's Phoenix - Town & Country (90) 4821 N 20th St, Phoenix, AZ 85016 602-912-9022 Trader Joe's Paradise Valley (282) 4726 East Shea Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85028 602-485-7788

  24. 24. NOTE: CONFESSION OF AN APPLICANT SLAMMER…Back when they came to town, they were new and fresh to this market. They were open and willing to create opportunities for people who had been denied just that by their background. They said “Sure, we will not reject people because merely because of their past history (ie. Criminal history)…” Based upon the kindness of their heart (recruiter, now, long since gone from the company), we slammed them at their early recruitments with what must have seemed to be every newly released person from AZ DOC (some…a lot of them…really were heavy duty guys/gals) and the recruiters freaked…the vast majority of applicants (way over 50%) were rejected by the corporation. By the time of the second round of interviews, their ads now carried, bold, block lettering that said “NO FELONIES!” After that they went to this system where you must apply online and you are screened (rejected) by computer selection for answering “YES” to have you ever been convicted? Nice and neat solution, tidy and without applicant recourse…”we selected another candidate…thank you!” This is what happens and why many employers are not willing to openly say that they are open to considering people with backgrounds – in fact, legally, it is easier to exclude everyone in this class rather than be accused of favoritism. Were the local job placement agencies to blame? Yea, as they are driven not by what is good for the employer, the community and many times not even their clients; they are driven by numbers (the need to generate numbers). This company was slammed by the sheer numbers that were herded towards them and in the end; they reacted not too well and this eliminated all opportunities for all previously incarcerated job seekers. Is this
  25. 25. unusual? No, this is the norm just ask Danny of Danny’s Car Washes among other local businesses. What is the solution, I don’t know? Maybe not until you tear down the way the system works, rebuilding it to consider the REAL needs of everyone in the whole community instead of the greed of agencies driven to create and required to achieve totally unrealistic placement numbers (85 hires out 100 enrolled) of hard to place job seekers because the grant structure is conducted as an E-Bay Auction to the highest bidder and goes to agency willing to bid the highest numbers. Eliminate the actual numbers to be placed and replace it with will “we will serve ___ number of _____ and work with them towards securing employment” would have helped the local business community and the applicants (the agencies) to be served. - Just a random thought or two from a former slammer and herder?
