  • 1. WELCOME TO THE FIRST FIRST, IF YOU MISSED LAST WEEK’S JOB FAIR…YOU DIDN’T MISS ANYTHING OTHER THAN SORE FEET, MASSIVE CROWDS AND ENDLESS BROCHURES AND WEBSITES! NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO CREATE A JOB FAIR FOR ONE…YOURSELF, FOR YOURSELF AND TO GET YOU HIRED…BIG OR LITTLE, IT IS UP TO YOU! MASSIVE JOB GIVE-A-WAY LIMIT NO MORE THAN TWO JOBS PER APPLICANT
  • 2. CREATING YOUR OWN JOB FAIR… Here is your direct chance to set up and do your own job fair. No, you will not need to set up tables or let the neighbors know that 10,000 people will be at your apartment between 9 AM to 2 PM tomorrow. It is not that kind of event but, it will achieve much more than you did at the Big Dog Agency Job Fair(s). This homegrown creation of your own job fair allows you to select the employer list that you want. It could be 200 or it could be 10 employers on your list. You decide and prepare for them the same way you would if they were meeting you at the stadium. HERE IS HOW YOU CREATE YOUR OWN JOB FAIR:  Make a list of employers that you are interested in (Like the job fair employer list)  Do your homework to find out everything that you can (same as the brochure that you would have got at the real job fair)  Call the HR Office and ask how do they and where do they advertise new jobs  Follow up on that information to see what they have openings for  Before you apply, get the company’s job description and/or go to ONET to get all of the key words, phrases, skills and abilities you will need to do the application correctly.  Take your time and do the application correct. This is critical to the success of your job fair. NEVER DO MORE THAN TWO APPLICATIONS PER DAY AS EACH WILL TAKE YOU SEVERAL HOURS TO DO PROPERLY!  Call the HR Office and advise them you applied and ask as to how you can follow up on this. TIPSTER: If you are asking this question while standing live at the HR Office (with smaller companies), you could end up sitting down with the hiring manager – so go looking like you are ready to go to work. ALTERNATIVE NEXT STEP: Look on the next page to learn how to locate and contact the hiring authority you need to get your information to… MASSIVE JOB GIVE-A-WAY LIMIT NO MORE THAN TWO JOBS PER APPLICANT
  • 3. FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON, IN THE RIGHT LOCATION, AT THE RIGHT TIME… Unlike the Big Dog, 250 Employer Job Fair, where you were none of these things, your job fair of one can (with you doing your job) find the right person, get to the right place (on an invite) and if you have done your homework about the company, you will be in a place with the ability to say the right thing! FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON Not really all that hard to do if you channel the “Double Odd” Spy in you. It can be simple as calling and asking who is in charge of the department or section where the job is. With large, publically held companies, this information is in the company’s prospective (free to all who are interested in buying stock from the marketing department or online). Threw that one in for the high-end, corporate types who leave here disappoint. OK, back to all the really people who are needing a real job. Again simply call is the best way, if it is a secret, I might want to wonder why and then rethink working for them. TRICKY WAYS: Always remember the psychological fact that you have a 14 second window to operate in before a person makes the decision to listen to you or stop. This means that anything you say to them has to spark their interest to continue after those first 14 seconds.
  • 4. HERE ARE WAYS TO UTILIZE THIS AND GET THE INTEL YOU NEED.  Call the company – better to have the correct department or if not possible talk to the operator.  Whoever answers the phone gives you their name, right? This is a common practice in companies. Remember it and/or write it down.  Refer to them by first name and start talking to them like you are old BFFs (Best Friends for Forever…like for sure!)  Start a conversation with “Man…are we swamped over here, how are you guys doing? Hey, my boss is got me doing that stupid contact sheet again…  It’s so far out-of-date…Hey, is Mister Johnson still running everything in the Department? {PAUSE while they tell you that there is no Mister Johnson and then interrupt} See, I told you this was a mess!”  What is going on their brain is nothing because you are in that 14 second window and you are talking like you know them and (without thought) they will give you a name. They do this because you caught them off balance and hooked them into a conversation before their brain could kick in.  If you got a name, ask them “this at this number right?” “Do they have an e- mail?” Now, you are set.  Finish the call by making them feel good. “Sylvia. You may have saved my job! Thanks so much. Hey we need to do lunch the next time I’m over there.”  They will brag about how they saved your job and that you owe them lunch to all their friends…they won’t remember your name but, they will remember you. If you didn’t get an e-mail address, don’t worry because one of the Auntie Sue and Uncle Bob’s Used Job Shack share this with us the techniques on how to figure this out…READ ON!!
  • 5. THE ART OF E-MAIL ADDRESSING…. Chris Hogg I help people make informed, self-directed career decisions and help them conduct effective employment searches… ABOUT FINDING EMAIL ADDRESSES. When you get a person’s name, such as Auntie Sue: SCENARIO 1: Do a Google search in the format of: “*@domainname.extension” For example, if the person you want to reach works at www.topflitebbq.com your Google search would be “*@topflitebbq.com” The asterisk wildcard will return names preceding the email address, such as, for example, uncle.bob@toplflitebbq.com cousin.fred@topflitebbq.com and neice.jenny@topflitebbq.com Here you see a consistent pattern: firstname dot lastname Compose your email, address it to auntie.sue@topflitebbq.com and send it. Wait a couple or 5 minutes, and if you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can safely assume your email went through. SCENARIO 2: Do a Google search in the format of: “*@domainname.extension” For example, if the person you want to reach works at www.bigwarehouse.com your Google search would be “*@bigwarehouse.com” The asterisk wildcard will return names preceding the email address, such as, for example, unclebob@bigwarehouse.com cfred@bigwarehouse.com and jenny@topflitebbq.com What do you do now, since there is no standard pattern for the individual names? You experiment.
  • 6. First, you send an email to auntiesue@bigwarehouse.com and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . . Second, send an email to asue@bigwarehouse.com and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . . Third, send an email to sue@bigwarehouse.com and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . . Fourth, try different formats of names until one of them goes through or until you run out of practical options. ============================================================= Thanks Chris! Thanks for the INTEL...Campers! This is a powerful tool that needs to be used wisely or else it could become a weapon of mass destruction to your ability to get a job. Remember, be respectful of this person, understand that their time is valuable and keep it on point with your request that they pull your application and tell them why they should (dudes...dudettes! Your talking points..."You were looking for a person with ____ years of exp....I actually have ___ years...You need someone certified to be ______I am and have been for the past ___ years...ECT..." - You did do your homework...Right? So that you can have that conversation - because you know what they are looking for and then ask them when they would have time to see you. "When can I come over to talk with you about this opening?") The last part is critical. It is the difference between getting an interview or nor (getting hired or not)...Learned that as a kid while working on the car lot! You always have to close and create the sale...DON'T EXPECT YOUR CUSTOMER TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE... This (for a lot of weird reasons) is the same...there is a good cheddar of a story...almost a Swiss but, I will leave it for now...the Walking Dead is about the start! So, campers! Remember keep on track unlike old Uncle Bob...Show respect of their time and position...Loop the conversation into reminding the employer on what they needed and then loop again into how you fit each of those needs...Know about the company and CLOSE THE SALE by asking "when can I come talk to you?' CHRIS IS DE TOPPS! Thanks for helping out and sharing!!!!!
  • 7. HOPEFULLY YOU TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THIS SPECIAL EDITION ON HOW TO BEAT THE JOB FAIR AND GOT A JOB BEFORE IT STATED…IF NOT READ IT AND TAKE NOTES FOR NEXT TIME! Two week ago, we told you about the job fair (last week’s big dog job fair with 250 employers) and we hope that you took the INTEL to heart and that you are already working or are about to go to work. Somehow, we doubt that as you are still reading…uhhh? If you didn’t read this the first time and are thinking about going to the upcoming job fairs in April, please go back and read, download if you have a smart phone, tablet or computer (as the books are E- Books) and take notes on how you can beat the system and get the job that the job fair wouldn’t (and didn’t…did it?). AVAILABLE HERE FOR FREE: http://www.slideshare.net/fredgwest1999/11- mar-2014-special-employment-myth-busting-issue These job fairs have nothing to do with you actually getting a job…It is not designed with that in mind. If you went then you now understand. If not read this edition as it will give you critical advantages over those who are preparing to go to the next big (and highly promoted) Big Dog, Killer Job Fairs with hundreds of employers and tens of thousands of job seekers. Learn here to be smarter than them and have a job before they even get to go to the job fair. This is supplied as a courtesy of UNCLE BOB and AUNTIE SUE @ the Used Job Shack.

  • 35. A YOUNG LADY CRIED: “I HAVE NO SKILLS!” “I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE!” “I HAVE NO HOPE!” With that she had resigned herself to the helplessness of your plight and that it wasn’t worth the effort to try. I told her that this was a copout and that I wasn’t going to let her do that. I said that because her conclusion was so far from true anywhere except in her mind. In fact, all of the jobs that she seemed to have an interest in center around what she felt comfortable with, that she had spent years (at home) perfected her skills and abilities to a master’s level. In several of these areas, she was truly a journey level person: Cleaning, cooking and caregiving. In fact, I had to warn her that she may be over qualified for the entry level jobs in those industries. In each, she had professional experience and must be pretty good at each - as she says her kids never throw food back at her – and if anyone would, they would…the hardiest critiques come from those we care about the most…No space to explain…hope you get the jest of the argument. Whether others would agree with this assessment depends solely on her ability to showcase skills and abilities. It is like the old man use to say: “If the job is riding a bicycle…do you really care where I learned to or that I can?” In these entry level jobs experience is not necessary but, skills and abilities are! This special issue came out of that conversation…Hope it can help others!
