THURSDAY NIGHT SPECIAL
SO YOU WANT TO WORK IN HEALTH CARE?
It’s not doctors and nurses…it takes a village to
make the medical industry work!
From the Desk of Nurse Idagivva U. Abigshot
CAREERS IN MEDICAL SUPPORT
Welcome to the Healthcare Hiring Season here in Arizona.
Yes, there is a hiring season. The season ties into the arrival of
and/or the departure of our lovely snowbird visitors.
As they arrive for the winter, the hospitals, clinic and related
segiments of the industry start hiring to fill the need for extra
Likewise, come early summer when they leave, hiring slows
down if it doesn’t grind to a stop.
So here we are in the waining days of this season’s hiring and I
am here to say that there are still a wide range of jobs
available if you know where to look and how to apply. Many
times, the hospitals do not hire medical support or administrative staff directly because it is (someways)
seasonal employment. They hire through agencies and registries even though they post their jobs up on their
website. Many hospitals or managed care facilities would be hard pressed to give a list of people they hired
from the web promotions.
There are three ways to break into this market . It is not hard but, it is not necessarily easy to do. Here they
are in the order of their effectiveness:
1. Know someone (who is well respected or liked at the facality) and have them hand walk you through
the HR Process. Be carefull as this can backfire and bite you big time, if the person is not well liked.
Your success or failure is tied to this person’s likeability. Get referred by the wrong person and you
(may) never work for that facility because you are forever tied to the goodness or badness of the
person who referred you. ($18/HR)
2. find out what agency or registry that the facility hires through and go register with them. The downside
here is that you pay for this access in the form of the agency makes several dollars per hour off of your
labor and that makes it hard to every get a perminite position. ($14/HR.)
3. Low ball yourself to the minimum salary for your occupation and be willing to work at that wage in
order to secure the job. Example would be: we had a med tech who was making $18/HR. but, he
wanted to chance hospitals. We initially put his acceptable salary as $16/HR and there was no
response. We tried $14 and then $12/HR. and still nothing. We went down to $10/HR. and the hospital
called him within minutes of us posting his application. ($10/HR.)
The different ways and the difference in the salaries you can start to see. Is this fair? Naw! This is Arizona
and we are a “right to work” (right to hire or not) state where the employers are free to do as they please
without much recourse. All this said, Arizona is a boom market because the demographics grow greyer

*THE EMPLOYER’S “PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK” MEANS NO ARRESTS DURING THE PAST 5
YEARS. Betcha if I hadn’t told you that they only go back 5 years, then, you would have
walked away from this offer. HOW MANY OTHER JOBS ARE YOU WALKING AWAY FROM
BECAUSE YOU ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT THE EMPLOYER MEANT TO SAY?
Here you would have been wrong…!
“…reliable transportation to and from work…” remember that this does not mean you MUST have a car. If
they did, the would say “Do you have a car?” This means can you get to work?…they don’t care if you can get
home…that’s your problem for picking a job so far away from where you live….I mean, like, there was not any
jobs closer? So DO NOT add to the employer’s question, DO NOT complicate it…KEEP IT SIMPLE! If you can get
there the correct answer is “YES!”
