First Lady Recognizes UMOM in Speech at National Conference
On July 31st at the National Alliance to End Homelessness annual conference, first lady, Michelle Obama, spoke on the urgency to end homelessness for veterans around the country. In her remarks at the Washington D.C. event, she also mentioned UMOM for rapidly rehousing over 300 veterans and their families through our SSVF program (Supportive Services for Veteran Families)! We of course couldn’t have done it alone. We are proud to partner with Save the Family, who works together with UMOM to serve Veterans and their families.

Impress us enough and you might just go home with a job offer. ========================================================================== TIPSTER: The employer’s online job description (beyond the bare basics) is terrible. If you had more time, you could smooze the HR People to give you the full, multi-page description. But, your available time is short and unless you want to drag Old Lady Luck Along to roll the dice for your future; then go to the US Department of labor’s Dictionary of Occupational Titles and type in the job title you need info on. You will be amazed by the length and breathe of the job description and assemblage of key words and phrases for your job title. This will give you a complete breakdown of the required skills/abilities and it has all the key words/phrases to get past the gate keeper. http://www.oalj.dol.gov/libdot.htm http://www.onetonline.org/

If you do not have the experience that is current or don’t really want to work here, please stay home. Thanks! OK CAMPERS…LISTEN UP! This is critical. In the past month we have seen 5+ people loose a job because the phone number they put on their application was bogus, out-of-minutes or their voice mail wasn’t taking messages. Don’t let this be you! You MUST have (maintain) a direct number where you will/can pick up and answer directly. You have ONLY an hour window before the employer calls someone else.

  • 19. COURTESY CLERK AT KROGER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – Applied in store and was called to interview the next day. Just asked very basic background questions. I don’t think there were any personality questions at all. Overall very easy process which is expected for a very low skilled job. Interview Question –No difficult questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – The interview was pretty formal and easy. The Associate Manager was the one that did the interviewing and she just asked the basic retail questions. It seems that if you get an interview you'll more than likely get the job as long as you don't say anything that would jeopardize that. The manager actually spent more time talking about the company than actually asking questions. She also liked the fact that I was in college since many of the employees there were attending a college or university. They also do an oral drug test with you right away in the office after the interview. Interview Question –There wasn't any difficult or unexpected questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – I applied online. I was contacted 2 weeks later for an interview. I arrived early, and had to wait. The interviewer finally came to interview me. Was immediately asked to see my identification and SS card. She copied it, and then proceeded to give me papers describing the duties of cashier and courtesy clerk. I was asked questions regarding education, past experience, scheduling availability, customer service, and why did I want to work for Kroger. She went over the pay scale, training, scheduling, dress code, lunch/breaks, and insurance. Afterwards, I was given an oral drug test and back ground check. Exactly one week later, I was contacted to come in and do paperwork. Training was then scheduled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Initially received a phone call to schedule an interview several days after my online application. I arrived a bit early so I had to wait for about ten minutes upstairs, I guess they weren't expecting me to be prompt. When my interviewer arrived, it was fairly straightforward and quick from then on. We went into the office and I was asked simple questions about myself, my work experience, and why I wanted to work for Kroger.
  • 20. At that point, the conversation shifted to the job description, work environment, expectations of me, and the drug test I'd have to take. I then was given time to ask questions, and then taken to the HR person to take my drug test. I was called a few days later when the results were in to schedule training and orientation. Easy process and the front end manager were very nice throughout it all. Interview Question –There weren't really any difficult or unexpected questions. They were fairly simple and straightforward. =================================================================== CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Applied online. Standard online application included basic info and a Q&A assessment test. Do not "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree" with anything and you should pass it just fine. HR called and asked me to come in for an interview with the manager. Wear something nice - Men: Collared button-down shirt (tucked in), slacks/khakis (no shorts) and belt (preferably one that matches shoe color), loafers or not-worn-out sneakers. • 21. THE SECRET TO GETTING HIRED WHAT YOU DIDN’T LEARN IN SCHOOL We have assembled a short check list to see if your “A” Game is ready to get you the job… SEE INSIDE FOR THIS AND A WIDE ASSORTMENT OF NEW JOBS FRESH FROM THE EMPLOYER…LIMITED TO JOBS ON HAND…LIMITED SUPPLY…NO RAIN CHECKS… FROM THE DESK OF… IDABITE U. INAHEARTBEAT, PhD. Dr. Inaheatbeat is a very well respected expert in employment circles at the University of Caine Studies Division of the University of Southern California. His recent work has been in establishing new guidelines for job seekers. BRING YOUR “A” GAME AND GET HIRED. As the current job market and finding employment at the entry or re-entry level has radical changed and morphed into a completely new paradigm that requires you (as the job seeker) to modify and change your methodology to seeking employment. Old technologies and advice on KILLER RESUMES and “Dress for Success” will not help you as it was never designed to. These worn and dates philosophies actually hinder and many times, defeats you. IF YOU ARE A CORPORATION WARRIOR OR ANY HIGH-END EXECUTIVE…then, this is a good way to go to your interview, it shows that that you respectful all of the time-tested and traditional values that the corporation embraces. If you are a college kid looking for you first corporate gig, then it is to your benefit to show up looking like this. IF YOU ARE A REAL PERSON LOOKING FOR A REAL JOB…then, this is your version of “Dress for Success.” In many occupations, this would be over dressing and might hinder you in getting a job with a company where “Dress for Success” is blue jeans and a non-logo Tee-Shirt. Do you see the difference? DON’T WEAR A SUIT TO HOME DEPOT!
  • 22. WHAT DOES “A” GAME MEAN? Your “A” Game means that you prepared for this interview and that starts back at doing the application correctly using RULE # 4 and its formula for getting the full job description (from employer or from ONET), tearing it apart for key words and phrases which then you immigrate into your actual job description to insure that you are covering the skills and abilities that the employer needs (not necessarily what you have done – what you have done is not important if the employer doesn’t want or need. Do not confuse experience, job titles with skills and abilities). Create a narrative utilizing the phrases, words and abilities (that the employer is looking for) so that it is an easy and understandable read. Now transfer this narrative from your application back into your job descriptions on your resume – so now you know what you have? You have a Killer Resume for the job that you are applying for and it perfect matches up with all the skills and abilities that the employer is going to hire. The next step in preparing you “A” Game is to do your homework! You need to invest 10-20-30 or whatever you need to research the following questions: • “Who are they?’ • “What do they do?” • “Why do they do everything the way that they do?” • “Where do I fit into this picture?” (The job you applied for and how well you meet the employer’s standards) It is critical to know enough about the company (not just a fact or two) to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation about the questions above. The first and last question that will be asked is “Tell me what you know about my company?” If the job is a restaurant, then print out and commit to memory the menu. This is critical because the largest part of your training (if hired) is to teach you they menu. If you already know the menu, how much training will you need? Get it now? Dress to your own version of “dress for success” which is for most entry or re-entry jobs going to be AZ Casual (khakis and polo shirt on the formal side or clean jeans and a non-logo Tee- shirt for laborer positions.” Finally, realize that you are now prepared with you “A” GAME, you have assembled an impressive argument(s) as to the fact that you are who/what the employer was looking for. TAKE A DEEP BREATH! The bottom line now, is that the employer now needs you MORE than you need them. If because of this prep, you are the full package, WHY WOULD THEY LET YOU WALK? Why wouldn’t they make an offer? GOOD HUNTING!
  • 23. SPECIAL ISSUE: COSTCO! “…GETTING A JOB HERE IS NOT FOR THE LAZY APPLICANT…” Most people who apply at Costco will NEVER hear from the regarding their application. In fact 8 out of 10 will not get an interview and from there 1 person MAY get an offer. WOW! That’s tuff! It is impossible to get a job there right? It is impossible ONLY if you don’t know the secret(s) to getting your application seen and thus becoming one of the two that actually get considered. This is not for the faint hearted, those who have (be nice) lazy job seeking skills or those who totally believe that their “KILLER RESUME” is magical and it is soooo good that it can open any door or get them any job…these will be some of those 8 out of ten applicants who don’t get interviewed and the surely won’t be the one hired. Is it that hard? No…but, you must be willing to set-a-side that killer resume and start from scratch. First thing you need to know is… RULE # FOUR This is a very simple question, but in order to give a suitable answer to the recruitment position, you must know how to answer. You need to know about the company you are willing to work for and read their job description. When you are asked this question, tell them that working for Sears will be a challenging and beneficial experience to you.
