From the desk of… Ida Wanto kickau PhD. Dr. Kickau is a leading expert in the reintegration of disaplaced workers into the realities of a dyamically changing job marker. In 2011, she herself was laided off from her research grant with the Federal Government and was personally reject for over 500+ position(s) to include animal (goat) hearder, double “00” Spy and is still bitter about not getting hired at Jack-Nthe-box. Dr. Kickau is here today with a range of suggestions on how to be successfully bridge the gap between what your experience is and what skills the employer is seeking in a “down-sizing-yourself” position or opportunity. Several years ago, in 2011, Dr. kickau was faced with a life changing career moment and was (after 20 years as a cranky, old and angry bureaucrat with the Department of That Ain’t Gonna Happen) thrown out into a labor market where her experience and a $1.50 would get her a cheap cup of coffee. 20 years of
  • experience with the government had not prepared her to seek new employment in a very changed labor market. She had a killer (one-size-fits-all) resume that she spent over $300 on and it was beautifully written, composed and showcased her 20+ year of administrative experience. Given the quality of this resume, she so believed in its magical powers that she sent it out to over 400 companies or in response for advertisement that she say. Over the coming year, she was to receive 300+ rejections from positions with the CIA all the way down to and including “Jack-N-The-Box.” She went to Workforce Connection and they suggested that she might need to take some workshop(s) on making a resume, verbal resume and they would be happy to sign her up. After a month, she ended up with a new (one-size-fits-all) resume that she then sent out to another 200+ employers and the end result was a duplicate of the first 300+. It was then, that she realized that it was her resume(s) that had hurt her and that they were to blame. Both resumes (the $300 and the Free one) worked too well in showcasing her experience(s) but, the problem was that she was not applying for her old job and the new jobs require very different skills. She, at first thought, that the employers could/would read between the lines and see that she was highly skilled to do any job. After 500 rejections she came to realize that the employers were not doing that and that is when she also discover the Used Job Shack Method of “Connecting the Dots” which showed her how to tailor make applications to match what the employers were seeking and how well skilled she was to do them. Interview Details – I went to a Career fair at my university. I talked to the people at the booth and gave them my resume. I never went online and applied, but they ended up contacting me 1 week later to schedule my first interview. They were very flexible with my interview time,
  • because I had a class during the original time. I just had my first interview today, and they said they will contact me one way or the other if I made it to the second round of interviews. Interview Questions • Tell me your major and why you picked it. • Tell me about a time when you had a lot of options to choose from and how did you go about choosing the right one. • Tell me about a time you had a really good working relationship with somebody and why did it work out. • Tell me about a time you had to work with a large group of people and it was difficult. • What is/was your favorite class in school and why? ========================================================= Auto Adjuster III Interview - I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at USAA in September 2013. Interview Details – Applied online and was contacted by phone within a couple weeks. Did an online assessment followed by a phone interview. An in-person interview was scheduled for the next week. Completed a drug test and information for a full background check. In-person interview went well, just a few behavioral questions and lots of information about the specific position as well as the office culture. Took 3 more weeks for background check to come through and an offer to be extended. Interview Question – Explain a time when you had to deliver news to a customer that was not in their favor. =================================================== Claims Representative Interview - I applied online and the process took 4 weeks - interviewed at USAA. Interview Details – The phone interview took place a few weeks after I completed the online assessments. The online assessment consisted of a typing test that was relatively easy if you know your way around a keyboard. The actual phone interview was about 15 mins. They start off telling you about the position and making sure you understand what the work schedule and training schedule will be like. Then they ask you
  • the interview questions, which are behavioral based. This basically means that the questions will start off like "Tell me about a time when..." The hardest one they asked was "Tell me about a time when you had to deliver news to a customer that wasn't in the customer's favor." Interview Question – The hardest question they asked was "Tell me about a time when you had to deliver news to a customer that wasn't in the customer's favor." ========================================================= AZ GRAND RESORT Nestled at the base of South Mountain, Arizona Grand Resort offers our guests an amazing retreat true to the Southwest. Our bright and airy guest suites with plush decors, amazing restaurants, relaxing spa, entertaining water park and championship golf course bring the guests once but it takes fun, friendly talented associates to truly create the experience and ensure the guest return. (By AZ MILLS MALL) TIPSTER: Open Availability is more important than your background. Background is reviewed to see how related it is or not to the job applied for, the age of the offense, your skillset(s) and how much they need you. Theft background might be an issue for housekeeping but, Fraud backgrounds with a clean MVR, good attitude are good for Bell People, porters and valet (except for car thieves or recent DWI/DUI). Get them wanting you then drop the “F” world and ask what do the mean by “pass?” 69% or 100%?
