State of the Mumbai Suburban Railway … and what the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is doing about it

Current Scenario – Problems & Solutions … as outlined by the MRVC

Problem 1 – Overcrowded Trains This must be the train to Virar. I bet we could set a Guinness World Record for the number of people a train can hold

Problem 2 – Overcrowded Stations
This looks like Churchate – during rush hour which lasts from 7:30am to 10:00pm.
We are hard-working folks here at Mumbai!

Problem 3 – Difficult Entry & Exit
Normal scene @ a Mumbai station.
Getting in and out is similar to a war scene. Be strong, prepared and have an aggressive strategy plus a back-up one.

Problem 4 - Encroachments
The pictured encroacher* says, “63,327 km (39,500 miles) of railway network in the country. It is bloody impossible to find land to build a house….er…shack. We are taking over the land of our mother nation”
*encroacher: someone who enters by force in order to conquer http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=encroacher

Problem 5 - Trespassing
Safety who, what, why, where…..????? Safety… bakvas *
It is public property after all (though we rarely pay any tax).
* Bakvas is hindi for nonsense

Problem 6: Encroachments/Trespassing
Double the trouble.
Take that Lalu Bhaiya *.

Problem 7 - Drainage
Trust me on this one …
It smells mighty nasty in all sorts of ways.

And now…
proposed/enacted solutions by the MRVC

Solution 1 – Rehabilitation of Encroachments
Even the Railway Development people dream of houses
Good Idea. But how? The land, the funds...

Solution 2 – 12 Car Rakes
It’s there. But it’s still overcrowded.
What about 14/16 car rakes? Expand the platform as well.

Solution 3 – Adding Corridors
Nice!! Do more of these.
Overcrowding, encroachment and trespassing – all dealt with in one move.
But why call them corridors? What about tracks or stick to patri * .
*patri is hindi for tracks

Solution 4 – Increase number of Rakes
Another good idea, and 65% is a huge increase.
So once again, where are the funds to buy/build those rakes?

Solution 5 – Modernization of Track Maintenance
Modernizing maintenance is not a solution. It’s a requirement.
But thanks for doing it.
How come now they say track and not corridors?

Solution 6 – Commercial Development
Not sure what they mean by this.
My guess is change train stations into commercial hubs to raise funds for the solutions mentioned earlier.
The pictures are nice though.

Final Thoughts
The pictures were all impressive. But the new trains are far too few and have been pretty much torn apart by the millions who use them daily.
Maybe we should get new trains made of the same thing that military tanks are made up of…
with windows of course 
