  • Uni ’ s less varied than poly ’ s; the 6 largest HBO ’ s have 50% marketshare of students; also, the smallest uni is 22% in size of the largest, with HBO ’ s the smallest is <1% of the largest (in # of students). Economies of scale have become important, as on one hand more competition for students, OTOH more and more is demanded of institutions. Trent towards more cooperation. OTOH a spirit of “ friendly competition ” . Universities are pretty homogenic in research:student ratio. SURF: best compared to JISC (but with 1/3 of budget per student) SURF: network (dutch edu internet backbone), supercomputing (sara), innovation (foundation), and Market – negotiate nationwide campus license contracts since 1991, at the moments with 120 different vendors.   • Why the library is interested in VRE ’ s (and in effect, a driver for UvAConext). Treloar ’ s 3 silo model. Focus on 3 rd silo has not been effective, we must interneve to offer services earlier in the academic workflow.
  • Inspiration for our approach is the DaMaRO project from Oxford (which had a session this CNI fall 12 Monday 1600-1700). As you see, it gets already more complex.
  • And if we add the overlapping projects, it becomes very complex.
  • It ’ s complicated. But monolithic is out.
  • We want this: integrated portal.
