Two Caged Tigers

  2. 2. An old man said to his grandson,“Boy, I have two tigers caged within me…
  3. 3. One is love and compassion. The other is fear and anger.”
  4. 4. The young boy asked,“Which one will win, grandfather?”
  5. 5. The old man replied, “The one I feed.” From an Indian tale
  6. 6. When we’re in an intimate relationship, we can be continually surprised.
  7. 7. Some surprises are for the better - candle light dinner, your partner doubled their income this year, spur-of-the-moment romantic getaways, and the inspired moments of being whisked away to the bedroom.
  8. 8. It makes us tingle when we think aboutthose precious things our loved ones do for us.
  9. 9. Then, there are those “other” surprises!
  10. 10. Surprise! I’m mad at you. Surprise!Why don’t you ever listen to me?
  11. 11. Surprise!The high monthly credit card bill.
  12. 12. Surprise!I’m tired, had a long day, and the house is a mess. Didn’t you do anything today?
  13. 13. It’s easy to get caught up in the “othersurprises” that are fueled with anger andfear, forgetting the love and compassion the relationship is built upon.
  14. 14. How does that happen? How do anger and fear seem to be unruly and how can love and compassion remain caged?
  15. 15. The ancient Indian Tale about the two caged tigers points to the answer.
  16. 16. There are two tigers caged within.
  17. 17. One of the tigers carries a destructivenature that’s ready to pounce on the weak.
  18. 18. This tiger is powerful and vibrant. It offers a direct path to getting what wewant, whether that’s a position of power or needing to be right.
  19. 19. We know this tiger is destructive. If left outof the cage for too long, the tiger can ruin relationships and rule our life with fear.
  20. 20. The other tiger is the merciful one.
  21. 21. This tiger is meek and mild, seeing things through the eyes love and compassion.
  22. 22. This tiger roams gracefully, bringingcommunities together, giving from the heart and willingly receiving love.
  23. 23. A symbiotic relationship of giving andreceiving is the merciful tiger’s main goal.
  24. 24. This tiger is our friend and partners with us to give a fulfilling life.
  25. 25. The problem is not that we cannot choosewhich tiger to unleash; the real problem isthat we cannot tame the destructive tiger.
  26. 26. We’ve tried in the past by neglecting thetiger, chaining the tiger to the cage and stuffing the tiger in the basement.
  27. 27. We don’t give the tiger any food, water, or love.
  28. 28. We hope that if we ignore the destructivetiger and forget about it, eventually it will come to its senses and be under our control.
  29. 29. Even though we might lock the destructive tiger away, it’s still consuming our attention.
  30. 30. We cannot give enough time and attention to the tiger who is merciful, loving, and compassionate because...
  31. 31. the thought of the destructive tigerbreaking out and being destructive, still exists.
  32. 32. One moment we’re enjoying a nice cup of tea with the loving and compassionate tiger...
  33. 33. then, in the next, we find ourself attending to and punishing our destructive tiger.
  34. 34. We know in our heart that both tigerscannot be together in the same room.
  35. 35. Which tiger will win?
  36. 36. The one that wins,whether it’s fear and anger
  37. 37. or love and compassion,depends on where we focus our attention.
  38. 38. Energy flows where attentions goes.
  39. 39. Splitting our attention between two tigers doesn’t work.
  40. 40. “No man can serve two masters: for eitherhe will hate the one, and love the other; orelse he will hold to the one, and despise theother. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”
  41. 41. The reality is that we disapprove of the fearand anger, and want to encourage love and compassion.
  42. 42. Hating, neglecting, and punishing thedestructive tiger to get rid of it is fueling resistance with resistance.
  43. 43. The destructive tiger or “mammon” grows.
  44. 44. What needs to happen if you want to servelove and compassion in your relationships are two things...
  45. 45. Love and accept the angry, destructive tiger within us.
  46. 46. Focus our attention on becoming more loving and compassionate.
  47. 47. Both of those help us to go beyond fear,anger, or any destructive patterns within us, and to operate with love.
  48. 48. Why would we accept and love adestructive tiger that has caused so much pain and fear in our relationships?
  49. 49. We do this because, what fear and angerreally want is to be loved and embraced.
  50. 50. For example, many families have one childwho pushes the sanity and well-being of the parents.
  51. 51. The “rebel child” of those families may not be mean by nature,
  52. 52. nonetheless he/she rebels, disobeys the rules and rarely wants to listen.
  53. 53. So what are the parents to do?
  54. 54. Keep punishing the child, restrict his orher’s liberties and “make them” respect the parents, right?
  55. 55. All that does is keep driving the child away from personal connection.
  56. 56. Feeding fear with fear only manifests more fear and further dysfunction.
  57. 57. What “bad” children want is to be loved and embraced.
  58. 58. They want to be seen for who they are and their uniqueness in the world, they lack clarity on how to express themselves in a positive way.
  59. 59. The more we push our values and beliefs on the child, the further away from love and compassion we both go.
  60. 60. To create better functioning, intimaterelationships based in love requires us to accept and embrace the negative,dysfunctional, energies of anger and fear.
  61. 61. Awareness of, and paying attention to, our feelings, noticing the moments when we’rein a place of anger or fear, is the first step to having our attention serve love and compassion.
  62. 62. Allow yourself to drink in the anger and fear by becoming one with it.
  63. 63. No need to do anything with it right now.
  64. 64. Only notice and pay attention to the visceral feelings in the body, observing how anger and fear play out.
  65. 65. Allow space for these apparently negative emotions to exist.
  66. 66. We don’t have to create space because ifanger and fear exist, the space is already there holding those feelings.
  67. 67. Your job is to notice the space.
  68. 68. With the noticing and embodiment ofspace, the charge around anger, fear, or any other “destructive tiger” will be released.
  69. 69. The ability to choose whether anger and/orfear is appropriate and resourceful for the moment becomes visible.
  70. 70. If those energies are not appropriate, we can drop anger and fear and choose something else, such as love.
  71. 71. When we allow space for anger, fear, and any other negative feeling to exist, theytranscend themselves and transmute into love and compassion.
  72. 72. With space and awareness comes choice.
  73. 73. We can redirect our attention to what we really want in that moment: Love and compassion.
  74. 74. A simple reminder can point usin the direction of love and compassion in any moment: “Is love available in this moment?”
  75. 75. That pointer is not meant to be answered.
  76. 76. Simply, when asked, it opens up your heart to receive what it’s thirsting for i.e. love, compassion, peace, unity.
  77. 77. Try it next time a heated argument comes up.
  78. 78. First, be aware of any negative energy, such as anger, manifesting within.
  79. 79. Silently ask the question, “Is love available in this moment?”
  80. 80. Be still. Be silent. Pay attention to thealiveness of your inner body and heart.
  81. 81. Rather than acting out anger, other choices become visible. Maybe being angry is not appropriate, so you drop it.
  82. 82. Maybe compassionate anger is what’s needed in certain situations.
  83. 83. Maybe what’s needed is our presence and the opening of our heart.
  84. 84. We all carry within us, two caged tigers.
  85. 85. One tiger has the potential to bedestructive and resonates with anger and fear.
  86. 86. The other tiger has the potential to fill us with love and compassion.
  87. 87. The tiger that we let loose depends onwhere we place our conscious attention.
  88. 88. Energy flows where attention goes.
  89. 89. If our attention is consumed by neglecting and pushing away negativity, fear, and anger, we become and manifest those qualities.
  90. 90. When those negative qualities arise and we love and accept them, we’re fueling life with love and compassion.
  91. 91. New dimensions open up and the choice of responding with love and compassion, in any chosen moment, becomes available.
