      • Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you to answer the question, "What are you doing right now?" by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called "tweets", to your friends, or "followers."

Notably, the chief executive of Zappos, Tony Hsieh , Twitters frequently. Because the company cultivates an un-corporate image, he’s the rare executive who can effectively post personal updates.

      • @replies (also known as “mentions”)
      • Use an at sign (@) in front of a Twitter username to reply to someone, to refer to them, or new public timeline message to somebody.
      • For Example: @deandelisle
      • Retweeting (RT)
      • Retweeting is the act of sharing someone else’s tweet with your followers – spreading the word wider. To identify a retweet, the Twitter convention is to put RT at the start of the retweet and to include the Twitter username of the person you are retweeting like attributing a quote. In fact, it is a violation of Twitters terms of service to present others’ material as your own, so attribution is key.

      • Use the sharp or number sign (#) as part of a “hashtag” to organize and categorize your information. For example: #forwardprogress
      • The Fail Whale
      • Twitter sometimes reaches overcapacity and you cannot tweet or read tweets. When that occurs, users of Twitter are taken to a screen that includes the graphic (by Yiying Lu ) of a whale, now referred to as the Fail Whale, seen to the right.

      • How do Comcast and Wesabe know customers are grousing? Twitter’s excellent search feature lets you learn what people are saying about any term — including you, your competitors or your industry. (Oddly, this search feature is different from the relatively useless one at the top of your own Twitter home page.) You can then respond to individuals — as Comcast and Wesabe do — with the @username trick.
