  • 3. The basic facts about Lithuania :
    • Lithuania is located at the W estern end of the East European Plain, on the shores of the Baltic Sea .
    • In the N orth it borders with Latvia; in the E ast and S outh with Belorussia; in the S outhwest with Poland and with the Kaliningrad district of the Russian Federation .
    • The state flag of the Republic of Lithuania is cloth consisting of three horizontal stripes. The colors in the flag symbolize the following: Yellow – the sun, wealth, bravery and honesty; Green – beautiful nature, lakes, meadow s , life and hope; Red – the blood for the m otherland.

    • Total Lithuania’s population is 3.43 million people.
    • In all, 83 . 5% of the population are ethnic Lithuanians. The most numerous ethnic groups are Polish (6.7%) and Russians (6.3% of the total population). At present about one million Lithuanians live abroad. The biggest communit ies are in the USA , Great Britain, Ireland.
    • The s tate language is Lithuanian. It belong s to the Baltic group of Indo-European languages. The history of the written language starts in the middle of the 16th century .

    • There are four main regions in Lithuania, commonly called ethnographic regions: Auk s taitija, Dz u kija, Suvalkija, Z emaitija .
    • The climate is part ly continental. The prevailing W estern winds bring warm humid air from the Baltic Sea. The average annual temperature is +6 . 2 ˚ C. In summer +18 ˚ C, in winter-6 ˚ C .

    • Lithuania covers 65 300 square km; the country landscape is diverse, consisting of gently rolling plains and extensive forests which cover about 32% of teritory . The highest point is 293 . 8 m etre Aukstojo h ill .
    • There are over 4 000 lakes and 758 rivers. The largest river is the Nemunas – 937 km long.

  • 7. Do you know that? According to the French National Geographical Institute, the center of Europe lies at 51 ˚ 51’N and 25 ˚1 9’ E: that is, about 20 km N orth of Vilnius. This point is marked by a special stone.

    • The capital of the Republic of Lithuania is VILNIUS. Naturally, it is the largest city in the country: according to 2001 data, the population of Vilnius is 600 000 .

    • Although the site of the city was probably settled earlier, the traditional founding date of Vilnius is set at 1323, when Grand Duke Gediminas chose it as the capital of the principality of Lithuania .

    • The city's university, founded in 1579 as a Jesuit academy, is the oldest in Lithuania. The old section of the city contains the ruins of a 14th-century castle and numerous churches dating from the 16th and 17th centuries

    • Shipbuilding in Klaipeda began in the 16th century .
    • There is a complex of museums consisting of: Maritime Museum and Aquarium (located in the 19th century Kopgalis fort); Curonian Spit Nature Museum; Dolphinarium .

  • 16. Kursiu Nerija National Park
    • The National Park (Curonian Spit) was formally established only in 1991, although its delicate landscape was protected from human exploitation in the pre-war period .
    • In the year 2000 UNESCO declared the Curonian Spit a World Heritage Site .
    • The biggest settlements are Nida, Juodkrante, Preila and Pervalka .

  • 18. The Exposition of Soviet Sculptures  in Gr u tas Park
      • In 1999, demonstrated soviet time sculptures from Lithuanian cities were brought to Grutas (Druskininkai, South Lithuania).
    • The number of ideological sculptures in one exposition is very rare and unique even in world context. It is heritage of several decades of Lithuanian monumental art, despite it's ideological content. These symbols of Lithuanian nation tragical time period enclose truth about soviet occupation times .
  • 19. The Hill of Crosses
    • The Hill of Crosses located 12 kilometers N orth of the small industrial city of S iauliai is the Lithuanian national pilgrimage center. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity .
    • Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses in September of 1993 .

    • After the Higher Education Law has come into force in Lithuania in year 2000, the binary system of higher education has been introduced.
    • According to it the non-university higher education institution- Kaunas College- was established incorporating 7 former higher professional schools.
    • More than 8 2 00 students and 621 teachers at present;
    • Studies are organized in 8 academic divisions
    • Studies oriented towards PRACTICAL ACTIVITY ;
    • Studies last from 3 to 4 years (120 national credits,
    • 180 ECTS) ;
    • Graduates obtain PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR degree;
    • Provide higher professional education in the areas of s ocial s ciences, health care, social work, t echnologies, h umanities and arts who would meet social and economic requirements of Kaunas region and the state;

    • Kaunas College was accredited and the p ermanent status was received in March, 2005 ;

    • Graduates acquire skills to work as hotel managers, travel operators , travel agents and guides in tour companies and travel agencies, in tourism information centres, airline companies, etc

    • by studying abroad under Erasmus program;
    • by accomplishing traineeship abroad according to bilateral agreements in summer;

    • by working in the exhibitions: e.g., STUDIES 2008, VIVATTUR’08,
    • by organizing and participating in various events: Competition of Young Entrepreneurs, Events for the World Tourism Day, conferences, etc.

    • Membership in Kaunas Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Crafts.
    • Continuous cooperation with other higher education institutions and universities in Lithuania and abroad, business enterprises and municipalities (Kaunas, Kelmė, Druskininkai).

    • Kaunas college actively cooperates with more than 100 partner institutions ( 70 - under Socrates/Erasmus program) from EU countries, Turkey, Canada, Belarus, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russian Federation , etc.
    • College actively participates in 28 international projects under various international programs (EU Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates/Erasmus, MInerva, Grundtvig, Comenius).
    • Each year more than 100 College students s pend their study period (3-9 months) in one of College i nternational partners’ higher education institutions or business e nterprise.
    • The number of incoming students is growing every year. At present there are 20 students from 4 countries studing under Erasmus program at the college.
