My research into the rock genre finalllll

 1. 1. My Research Into the Rock/Indie Genre
 2. 2. INDIE/ROCK GENRE

Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s

indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include lo-fi , post-rock , math rock , indie pop , dream pop , noise rock , space rock , sadcore , riot grrrl and emo , among others

Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock.

As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground and less testosterone driven perspective

In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term ndie rock, derived from "independent", describes the small and relatively low budget labels on which it is released and the do-it-yourself attitude of the bands and artists involved

Indie rock has been identified as a reaction against the "macho" culture that developed in alternative rock in the aftermath of Nirvana's success

By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed a number of sub-genres and related styles

The terms alternative rock and indie rock were used interchangeably in the 1980s, but after many alternative bands followed Nirvana into the mainstream in the early 1990s it began to be used to distinguish those bands, working in a variety of styles, that did not pursue or achieve commercial success

 3. 3. Artists

It has been noted that indie rock has a relatively high proportion of female artists compared with preceding rock genres, a tendency exemplified by the development of the feminist-informed Riot Grrrl music of acts like Bikini Kill , Bratmobile , 7 Year Bitch , Team Dresch and Huggy Bear

Examples of indie/Rock Bands/Artists A DAY TO REMEMBER :

A Day to Remember is an American rock band from Ocala, Florida. Founded in 2003 by guitarist Tom Denny and drummer Bobby Scruggs, the band has released four studio albums, nine singles and eight music videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmsbobsA7w8 ALEX TURNER:

A lexander David Turner (born 6 January 1986) is an English musician, for the rock/indie genre. Best known as the lead vocalist for, guitarist and main songwriter of the English rock band Arctic Monkeys . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSwpLkpJ45w&feature=related

 4. 4.

Kaiser Chiefs are an English indie rock band from Leeds who formed in 1996. They were named after the South African football club Kaizer Chiefs . The group's debut album, Employment , was released in 2005. It was primarily inspired by New Wave and punk rock music of the late 1970s and 1980s, and enjoyed international success with over three million copies sold. In 2005, the album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize . Kaiser Chiefs' second album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007), yielded " Ruby ", a number one single in the United Kingdom. [5] They released their third album, Off with Their Heads , in October 2008. After a three-year hiatus, they released The Future Is Medieval in June 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hamKl-su8PE&ob=av2e

KAISER CHIEFS:

Mayday Parade is an American rock band from Tallahassee, Florida. 6. 6. Kerrang!
 7. 7.

Kerrang! Is written in a dramatic font taken from the ‘da font’ site, giving it a broken glass effect which could suggest a rebellion which is associated with the rock genre

The masthead is always at the top across the page. Very dramatic, loud and big like the rock genre

The use of the exclamation mark helps to give it a more dramatic feel like you should almost shout the title out and this makes the title seem louder, like rock music

Kerrang! Is a form of onomatopoeia with ‘Kerrang!’ being the sound made when strumming on an electric guitar, this reinforces that it is a rock magazine.

Large dominant images of rock artists are always on the cover , sometimes the expressions on their faces can differ sometimes it can be serious and quite moody and aggressive where as sometimes it can be quite cheerful and smiley looking expressions this shows the diversity/contrast within the genre and how it can be happy and bold but also depressive.

The main image is usually very ‘in your face’ just like the rock genre being loud and noisy along with the bold characteristics of the rock genre

The covers are usually bright and exciting showing the loud atmosphere of the rock genre. Contrasted with dark colours of the clothing worn by the artist on the front cover

The font used for the cover lines are very bright, big and bold. Very ‘in your face’ like the artists associated with the rock genre. This shows the loud dominating vibe we get from the rock genre.
