Restraint with the nose is good, good is restraint with the tongue. Restraint with the body is good, good is restraint with speech. Restraint with the heart is good, good is restraint everywhere.A monk everywhere restrained is released from all suffering & stress.
心調 喜御 住手 禪足 定語 ，， 比調 丘御 獨最 知高 足者 。， Hands restrained, feet restrained speech restrained, supremely restrained —delighting in what is inward, content, centered, alone: hes what they call a monk.
善比 說丘 法調 與御 義語 ，， 如善 甘巧 露不 法誇 雨耀 。，A monk restrained in his speaking, giving counsel unruffled, declaring the message & meaning: sweet is his speech.
念比 法丘 思住 惟於 法法 ，， 不喜 離悅 於於 妙佛 法法 。， Dhamma his dwelling, Dhamma his delight,a monk pondering Dhamma, calling Dhamma to mind, does not fall away from true Dhamma.
清所 比莫 淨得 丘嫌 不雖 妒己 懈微 忌所 怠少 他得 ，， ，， 諸比 心莫 天丘 不忌 所不 得他 讚嫌 於所 歎棄 定得 。， 。， Gains: dont treat your own with scorn, dont go coveting those of others. A monk who covets those of others attains no concentration.Even if he gets next to nothing, he doesnt treat his gains with scorn. Living purely, untiring: hes the one that the devas praise.
無若 我於 故心 無與 憂身 ，， 彼不 實執 稱我 比我 丘所 。， For whom,in name & form in every way, theres no sense of mine, & who doesnt grieve for whats not: hes deservedly called a monk.
證比 寂丘 靜住 安慈 樂悲 ，， 諸喜 行悅 之佛 解教 脫法 。， Dwelling in kindness,a monk with faith in the Awakened Ones teaching, would attain the good state, the peaceful state: stilling-of-fabrications ease.
斷汲 除去 欲舟 與中 瞋水 ，， 比水 丘去 證舟 涅行 槃快 。， Monk, bail out this boat. It will take you lightly when bailed.Having cut through passion, aversion, you go from there to Unbinding.
比勤斷 丘修五 越於下 彼五分 岸根結 ，，， 名消斷 「滅五 渡五上 瀑煩分 流惱結 者，， 」 。 Cut through five, let go of five, & develop five above all.A monk gone past five attachments is said to have crossed the flood.
地比 獄丘 吞勤 鐵修 丸定 ，， 熾心 然莫 哀逐 號愛 苦欲 。， Practice jhana, monk, and dont be heedless. Dont take your mind roaming in sensual strands.Dont swallow — heedless — the ball of iron aflame. Dont burn & complain: This is pain.
具無 足慧 定者 與無 慧定 ，， 彼無 近定 於者 涅無 槃慧 。，Theres no jhana for one with no discernment, no discernment for one with no jhana. But one with both jhana & discernment: hes on the verge of Unbinding.
欣常 如獨 喜住 實住 於於 知空 所正 見閒 悟觀 法處 ，， ，， 覺五 得比 者蘊 出丘 知之 世調 不生 法靜 死滅 樂心 。， 。， A monk with his mind at peace, going into an empty dwelling, clearly seeing the Dhamma aright: his delight is more than human. However it is, however it is he touches the arising-&-passing of aggregates:he gains rapture & joy: that, for those who know it, is deathless, the Deathless.
心願 戒慧 充彼 波僧 滿意 提之 喜和 木先 悅婉 叉務 ，， ，， 必舉 親攝 得止 近根 至悉 勤意 苦端 善知 邊莊 友足 。， 。，Here the first things for a discerning monk are guarding the senses, contentment, restraint in line with the Patimokkha. He should associate with admirable friends. Living purely, untiring, hospitable by habit, skilled in his conduct, gaining a manifold joy, he will put an end to suffering & stress.
