2012 used animated visual effects throughout the film whilst Hot fuzz didn’t use any due to its small budget in comparison.
Hot Fuzz used gas mortars to create large scale fireballs whilst 2012 used animated explosions so they could emphasize the explosion.
In Hot Fuzz For one of the final scenes of the film, the Sandford police station is destroyed by an explosion. Part of the explosion was created by using a set model that showed its windows being blown out, while the building remained intact. The actual destruction of the building was depicted by exploding a miniature model of the station showing the low budget nature of the film. In contrast, 2012 used animated visual effects so they digitally created and destroyed buildings in this more high budget way.

Audience
2012 was a four quadrant movie which reached out to all corners of the market, and as Tim Bevan said, would have a large bulls eye and would easily get a large profit and therefore a large amount of money could be used in the production of the film, in the same way Hot Fuzz was also a four quadrant movie however, due to it being produced by a more independent company, only a small amount of money was used for production in contrast to 2012.

Production Practices
Due to 2012 being a Hollywood movie, it used vertical integration to maximise the profits that the film would get as it was distributed by Columbia Pictures, whilst Hot Fuzz used vertical integration with universal pictures. Whilst Universal pictures only work with Working Title, Columbia Pictures which is also a film production giant produced 2012 showing they could use a much larger budget for the film.
Another production practice is that Hot fuzz was an English based company and therefore their film was only shot in England, whereas 2012 was produced by a large American company, and therefore could be shot in Canada and America, as their budget allowed them to go further across the globe to get the perfect shots for their film

Distribution & Marketing
2012 used Sony Pictures as a synergy marketing campaign to advertise their film, in comparison; Hot fuzz didn’t use any synergy marketing campaigns.
2012 used many ATL advertising techniques such as a few different TV advertisements, Huge Billboards, and synergy marketing, whereas in contrast, Hot Fuzz only used small billboards and only one TV advertisement.
