The Size of Space

  1. 1. PowerPoint Show by Andrew
  2. 2. All of the stars you can see in the sky are in our own galaxy! What lies beyond our galaxy? Here is a tiny glimpse…..
  3. 3. On September 3rd, 2003….
  4. 4. …the Hubble Space Telescope began pointing it's camera at a small area in the night sky.
  5. 5. The area, about a tenth the size of the full moon, appeared to be complete blackness with no stars visible to the naked eye.
  6. 6. Hubble kept its camera pointed there for over 4 months, taking in all the light it could. This is what Hubble saw…..
  7. 7. Each dot in this image is an entire Galaxy. Each Galaxy contains up to 1 trillion stars. Each star may have a system of planets. THERE ARE OVER 10,000 GALAXIES IN THIS PHOTO ALONE.
  8. 8. These are the most distant objects ever photographed. More than 13 billion light years away.
  9. 9. The large galaxy pictured here contains 8 times as many stars as our Milky Way Galaxy.
  10. 10. Since light takes 13 billion years to reach Earth from these galaxies, the image we see actually depicts a time when the Universe was only 800 million years old. (Big Bang Theory)
  11. 11. The entire Star Trek series takes place in ONE galaxy. The USS Enterprise traveling at warp speed would take almost 10 million years to reach this galaxy.
  12. 12. From what looked like NOTHING! Thank You
