  • 2. WHAT IS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY?
    • The study and practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by using appropriate technological resources.
    • The use of technology in educational settings: the instructional use of computers, television, and other kinds of electronic hardware and software.
  • 3. BRIEF HISTORY
    • 1910 – 1980
    • SILENT FILMS ARE PRODUCED FOR INSTRUCTIONAL USE BUT TEACHERS DO NOT USE THEM FREQUENTLY
    • THE FIRST OPERATIONAL COMPUTER WAS PUT INTO USE. THE EARLY USE OF COMPUTERS IN EDUCATION WAS PRIMARILY FOUND IN MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
    • SCHOOLS START USING TECHNOLOGY, ESPECIALLY THE TV

    • IBM’s first commercial appears.
    • School dropout rate starts declining towards zero but teacher-controlled classrooms model does not disappear
    • The first large-scale project for the use of computers in education is developed.
    • The use of technology is supported in schools: Computers are used for administration or for school counseling.

    • Inclusion of computer maintenance in School vocational training programs
    • LOGO programming language is developed: learning is more effective when the learner actually constructs a meaningful product .
    • Minicomputers and personal computers are used everywhere.

    • The Apple I computer gains popularity in small business.
    • IBM is the first mainframe manufacturer to develop a PC and the first educational drill and practice programs are developed for personal computers
    1980 - 1990
    • Sperry Corporation is the second mainframe manufacturer to develop a PC. The Apple II computer finds widespread acceptance in education

    • Apple Macintosh computer is developed; computer-based tutorials and learning games are also developed by commercial software manufacturers.
    • 25 % of high schools use PCs for college and career guidance.
    • 60 % of all workers in the US use computers.
    • Laptops are developed,

    • Multimedia PCs are developed.
    • Schools use Gopher servers to provide students with on-line information.
    • Digital video, virtual reality, and 3-D systems capture the attention of many.
    1990 - 2000
    • The Internet and the world wide web began to catch on:
    • businesses, schools, and individuals create web pages.
    • Search engines such as Google and Yahoo constantly develop new ways to find information within the ever-growing number of web pages

    • YouTube is founded and comes online in 2005.
    • By 2006 Skype announce that it has over 100 million registered users
    • Apple introduces the iPhone to the public .
    • Wi-Fi – Wireless Internet Connection is developed.
