Hierarchy of Process Mapping
• A process map that is organized by business function outlines all the related
steps needed to achieve a specific outcome or result within that business
function.
• It provides a systematic methodology for naming, describing and classifying
business processes that define the whole or part of the operation of an
organization.
• A process map is viewed from a high level (Level 1) and broken down into a
detailed view (Level 5)
• Level 1 – describes the category or business function. This is the highest level of a process such
as Order to Cash, Hire to Retire, Procure to Pay, etc.
• Level 2 – identifies a group of processes within a Level 1 process category or business function
such as manage close calendar, manage sub-ledger cutoff, manage reserves, etc.
• Level 3 – identifies a series of interrelated activities which convert inputs into results
• Level 4 – identifies specific activities performed (detailed steps to include in process flow diagram)
• Level 5 – identifies specific sub-activities performed (detailed steps to include in process flow
diagram)
